I will be doing a follow up video to this showing an even easier method in certain pieces of software like UGS, Openbuilds, but this is a generic method for everyone

My v bit migrated up the spindle (lost about 2 mm) and so it didn't fully carve everything. This saved me a good hour of "carving air" to fix it. Thanks!

Tip for more complex gcode : If you can measure how deep the cnc was cutting before failure you can search for the G1Z command with that depth, then back up one pass. For example, if it stopped at 3mm cutting depth you can search for G1Z-3, then scroll up to the last G0 or if you know each pass is 0.2mm search for G1Z-2.8. This works as long as the gcode moves the Z axis separately from the X and Y (eg 2D and 2.5D).

The right video at the right time! I was slowly going through all your videos anyway, but this answers exactly what I've been wondering about for a while (with a while being the three measly days I've owned a CNC machine).

That's interesting. I usually just restart from the beginning and see the router cutting air for some time. It's less work but takes more time to finish. UGS can edit the GCode and start from any point but I never bothered.
@JamesDeanDesigns

Yes so at the point I did this video I actually found a bug in UGS s "Starr from" feature which is why I didn't show it I'm the video. After I raised it they have now corrected the issues making life much easier, you just literally say start from line XXXX and it does all the hard work for you

Needed this 3 days ago. My router stalled because RPM was set too low, had to do a emergency stop. Had to start the job from the beginning. Took an hour before it engage wood to cut. I try out the NC viewer but it won't show my tool path when I hit the plot button. Gcode was created by Vcarve.

Good day sir! I noticed that you are you a Dewalt router with your machine. I was wondering if that router (Assuming its the Dewalt 611) can be used in the FoxAlien Masuter Pro? Thank you for all your work! It's because of your videos I haven't chucked my FoxAlien machine in the bin!
@JamesDeanDesigns
@JamesDeanDesigns 7 ай бұрын
It needs the 69mm holder, I can't remember if the Masuter Pro comes with that as standard. I think it does though, if not the holder can be purchased separately. Glad my videos have helped 😁

Fantastic! Thanks! Didn't need it by now, but it is a matter of time when i will. Good to know! But if the board was displaced somehow, and you cannot put it to the same spot exactly, there is nothing can be done, right?

Extremely useful, and clearly explained. Thanks James. Question, have you any idea if there has been a pendant with mechanical jog wheel ever been available for machines such as the Sainsmart Genmitsu CNCs? A while back one was made available for duet machines such as the workbee by an extremely resourceful hobbyist. These would be a superb addition to so many hobbiests. I know there are remote apps for phones, but nothing beats a physical jog wheel for positioning.
@JamesDeanDesigns
@JamesDeanDesigns Жыл бұрын
The only Sainsmart machine I know that can handle a pendant is the 4040 Pro. What I found a little odd though was Sainsmart discontinued that pendant before releasing the 4040 Pro so essentially they released a machine with the pendant feature but no pendant to actually make it work. Other on the market may work but as I have never used one I am not really in a position to suggest any that may work

Hi James. Great video. Once you have identified the line you want to start from, could you use the "Start from" command in UGS? Cheerx Kevin

😆 well... my video was meant to be based around that function and not deleting code....however I found a glitch in UGS which they are now trying to fix so there will likely be a follow up to this showing how to do it in UGS using that function

Can you use this when laser engraving.
@JamesDeanDesigns

The principal is the same, you'll looking for the lines of code that essentially turn the laser on/off and you'll want to aim for one of those

@@JamesDeanDesigns Hi James I have tried it on a laser engraving file and it just shows gibberish in the g code viewer. Is it because it is png file do I need to change some settings.

silly question but how do you deal with the z height (when you restart) if you use a z-probe? Do you have to re probe the z height at the original location you used before starting the original cut, or is there some grbl method that can be used to first read the settings you used [obviously before the power outage or stopage] and the re-enter those setting [I use the sainsmart gcode for using their z probe]. as a side note, to figure out the lowest point of the material I borrow from my 3d printing process and use a 6x6 (or greater) probe grid so I have recorded the actual z height that was calculated by the sainsmart macros so i guess I could probably use a portion of that code and figure out how to manually set that data inside of UGS platform
@JamesDeanDesigns
@JamesDeanDesigns Жыл бұрын
If you have gone about setting your job up correctly (eg. homing and z probing) then you would do what I have done in the video which is after it stops, essentially just rehome, return back to your start point and run the z probe again before loading in the edited Gcode file. Usually I try and run the Z probe on a part of the material that is not going to be machined and therefore can always re-probe that spot if the job fails. If you are machining the entire area then I often run the Z probe on a scrap piece of the same material next to it or you can potentially Zero off the bed instead
