if you can't find the watt consumption on the lamps, you can use an ampere meter

Jeremy? Dude, you are an amazing teacher. I am a helicopter maintenance test pilot, airframe and power plant technician with a commercial helicopter and instrument license; point is I know maintenance. Tonight, I watched you for 2 hours. I installing a completely new electrical system on a 2013 LS 4046 tractor and the dual solenoids were giving me fits. You have a gift and I wish you amazing vibes with your channel. Excellent content! CW4 L.W, Retired. U.S. Army

One thing thing I wanted to add is with the function of the dimmer switch, it turns OFF the low beam when switched to high beam. So, when doing your wattage/amperage figures for adding a toggle, you will have to adjust not so much for the switch (only the high beams run through it) but for the wiring itself, if it will allow that much current flow. Which leads me to another video that would be interesting to see is what gauges to use for particular circuits. and what items are ok or suggested to be combined on a single circuit. You do a great job! Keep it up!

these videos have been really helpful in understanding relays and lighting circuits! I want to wire up my high beam and low beam headlights with a single dpdt on/off/on switch and was wondering how you might recommend doing that? From what I have found searching it looks like I might need two relays?
@briangibbs518

It should be easy to do a three-way toggle switch (on/off/on) Three prongs middle is hot coming in one side with a low beam other side high beam.

Great vid! As a suggestion, along the lines of knowing the amprage rating of a switch, add a relay to what you had in this video. I'm in that situation right now...with my entire project. I'm elimination all incandescent bulbs and going to LED. My project is an 86 GMC.

Something to be very mindful of, if you do ever happen to need to calculate the total wattage + amperage for 4 dual filament headlamps with all filaments powered up at the same time, (which you won't need to, nor should you actually do it that way:) Jeremy only calculated the total amperage for (4×) 65W high beam filaments = 260W - 20.30A. He forgot to include the amperage for the low beam filaments (if they're wired up similarly to the way first shown with a toggle switch:) Low beams - (4×) 35W = 140W - 10.94A. That's a total of 400W = 31.24A if all (8×) filaments are switched on together. This will generally never be the case to have all low beam and high beam filaments powered up together on a modern car, or even on an older car. Most cases, the low beam filaments will be turned off when the high beams are turned on, including the old foot switch style set ups, if they're still wired up to the factory standards. Most old cars with a foot switch will have just (2×) double filament high/low headlamps. Some older cars have (2×) double filament lamps for high/low beam, and (2×) single filament headlamps for high beam only, and the same applies for modern cars with halogen bulb headlights. You will pretty much never see low beam filaments also powered up when the high beams are turned on, like Jeremy showed early in the video using a toggle switch. However, if you do happen to wire them up so both high and low beams can work at the same time, make sure you do your calculations properly, choose your switches and fuses appropriately and also make sure your common ground wire (or common power wire if negative switched) for each dual filament lamp is sized appropriately to handle the amperage of both filaments running at the same time🤣👍

You've given me the courage to wire my dune buggy from scratch. I bought a pre-wired relay box from amazon and had to swap pins 30 with 87 and 85 with 86 (because of how it was wired) plus it made it easier for me to follow up with your other videos. Do you think you can do a video with the whole wiring ( lights, hazards, etc) using that pre wired box? Im also using the kubota switch for my sake 😅. Thank you for your amazing videos.

Great Channel Subbed [ Question ] can you wire an CORNERING Light Relay for OBS Chevy Trucks 1998-2002. Remember "cornering lights?" Flip on the turn signal and an area light illuminates that side of the car, you intend to turn toward. Had one on a 1979 Ford. I was great and very useful option lighting up the road as you make a turn.
@WiringRescue

Yes! Cornering lights are awesome to have. I don’t have a video for this, but you would need the corner light to bypass the flasher. They do make relays that have two outputs. So maaaybe I’d try to use one of those and have one output go to the turn signal light and the other output go to the corner light. I should totally make a video for this. :D

Thanks for the video. Multifunction switch faulty, no detent for high beam. Expensive hard to find part, Japanese Domestic Market Fuso 4wd bus. Wire direct to high beam at head light, via a fused switch, would work? Do modern Multifunction function switches operate via relay for headlights?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 7 ай бұрын
Most modern headlight circuits use relays because the amperage draw of the headlights is more than the switch can handle. Usually the better looking switches handle less amperage. The bigger uglier switches handle more amperage. I'd recommend using a relay. If you haven't already checked out this one I made, it may be helpful - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2a0ZISFh5mDpK8

:D Luckily even cars with vacuum powered headlight doors still have electricity going to the bulbs. So if you ACTUALLY want to do this, you just have to do a switcharoo on the wires that power the headlight bulbs themselves (assuming the car doesn't already have the exact same floor dimmer switch in the video!) Thanks for watching Dan! It's appreciated!

@@WiringRescue That I understand. Not dissing you. I grew up with the foot switch and to me it made sense. Now, everything is on basically 2 levers on the column. Meanwhile, my left leg, unless pushing on a clutch, does nothing. To me it makes more sense having it on the floor and moving it is not an ergonomic improvement. I have never heard an explanation of why it was moved from the floor. Driving requires hands on the wheel, unless you are just plain careless and enjoy distractions.

@@4speed3pedalsit’s not any more dangerous to flip a toggle switch than it is to take a hand off the wheel to shift gears…… you’re acting like both hands stay on the wheel the whole time you’re driving.

I see no improvement, it is my opinion, you do what you want. Plus, the floor switch was original equipment. It is like putting a toggle switch in and removing the horm button. It is just something different, not any safer, just different.
@Ihatemushrooms77
@Ihatemushrooms77 3 ай бұрын
Think my dimmer switch is going out as when it's on its on low beam but when I press down on the switch, I have no high beam. Anyhow, my foot dimmer switch is a 4 terminal type. My car has the guide-matic (auto dimming) feature. So as much as I'd like to do this (toggle switch method) then my auto dimming feature will probably not work.
