Thanks for that video and showing the pros and cons. Maybe Ulanzi will be an option. They sell cases with 17 millimeter-mounts at each lense. You’ll find step-up-rings from 17 to 52. With another step-up-ring I‘m using my 77mm dslr filters. Looks somewhat strange, but it works ;) Bad thing is, that you’ll have to change the filter to the right lense if you want to change that. The Moment seems more practical here.

Buy a cheapass case. Buy hot glue gun Buy a 55-58mm filter step up adapter Hotglue the adapter to the cheapass case. There you go. You can use any standard mirrorless/dslr filter on your phone for cheap now.

Have you tried using an nd filter for camera on ur phone? I have 23 ultra and just stuck it on the camera lens with my hand and adjusted it it caused black lines across my screen

Mine's on backorder. Patience is not one of my virtues. But wha'd ya gonna do in such a case? I tried the Sandmarc system (similar) but it caused vignetting on the UltraWide lens and I sent it back.

Cool mount, Honestly, whenever I am recording I put my phone on airplane mode and I turn off wifi so my video recording wont be interrupted But I do understand what you are saying BUT I do think its a great investment for on the go video and film

If you have an Apple phone you can create a shortcut that automatically puts it in airplane mode anytime you open the video app. I made a shortcut for filmic pro where when I open it it goes into do not disturb and airplane mode automatically.

Yeah, you can stack filters as long as the filter has threads to do it.

I don’t know whether to get the 2-5 stop or 6-9 stop variable nd filter for my smartphone. What shall I get?

I tend to use the 2-5 more and right around 5 is often the sweet spot in bright sun. 6 can be good too but I rarely go above that.

Being a complete novice, would it be possible to leave the iPhone 12 promax in its auto mode and use a VND filter, or can they only be used when manually changing the frame rate to get idea shutter speed?

You can leave it in auto and it will help as the phone will try to keep the 180° shutter rule (i.e. 24FPS = 1/48 shutter). Would probably only do this in very bright shooting scenarios and don’t use more than 6 stops (4-6 range is typically ideal in bright sunlight). The issue can be that you lose too many stops and the phone will auto raise the ISO and cause video noise. Manual is of course preferred, but definitely good to use ND for better motion blur.

Fixed are the best typically speaking as you’ll not have issues with color shifting or vignetting depending on the lens. But VND are super convenient. If you spend a little extra money and get a good one you’ll be okay 90% of the time. But even the higher-end ones can get the dreaded “X“ pattern when stopping way down on a wide lens. Moment makes some nice affordable ones along with Freewell. And PolarPro too for more $$$.

So this is a filter mount, not a lens mount. You use the filters to do different things like reducing the shutter speed using neutral density. Or adding a glow or softening skin etc. with other filters. So if you’re looking for filters get this but if you’re looking for a lens then go with the other.

You will have to use counter balance weights to balance it on that gimbal.

Do you always have to use on manual and double the speed, or auto will do it for you too, if you want some fast capture? And I see that ND makes it more cinematic, would I need Cinebloom for proper cinematic look? And what if I stuck ND and Cinebloom together? :) few questions here :)

Typically speaking the more expensive ones fair better in that regard, but not always. The Freewell ND are very solid and moderately priced along with Moment too. PolarPro are more expensive and have similar performance. Haven’t used the ones you got, so can’t say for sure, but even pricier ones can get the X pattern on wide lenses when stopping all the way down (and/or vignetting). Really just trial and error in the end and figuring out the sweet spot (or what doesn’t work) depending on your setup.

Sanmarc case has a perfect threading to screw in a filter holder and add ND filter. More clean set up, solid connection, NO blocking anything!

This is interesting but not as attractive as the (hard to find) Moondog Labs system which doesn’t require any screw mechanism blocking part of the screen but connects instead, apparently, to the M Mount on applicable cases. As it happens, Sandmarc does have such a case but my advice is to avoid it. I bought one (with their variable ND) that was so badly engineered and inflexible I almost broke my phone trying to get it off again. Thinking I got a ‘bad copy’ I bought a second one. Both cases are little better than junk and I’m still fiddling with ways to keep the nd filter in place using their awkward spring clamp system. Moondog Labs looks like the perfect solution but it’s either sold out all the time or only the older versions are available. For such a basic bit of engineering you’d think someone could magic up a supply to meet the obvious demand. Anyway thanks for the video!
