I had lots of them as pets when I was a kid 60 years ago. They are good to have around.

I have Gartersnakes, DeKay’s brown snakes, Eastern Hognose snakes, Black Rat Snakes, Northern Black Racers, and even Northern Copperheads on my property, and all are welcome. My neighbors have seen Timber Rattlesnakes, but I have never seen one on my property. They’re all aweesome creatures.

I've been bitten an number of times by garter snakes (only because I picked them up, and the bite doesn't really even hurt). One "hack" I discovered is that a pair of nitrile or latex gloves is enough to prevent a garter snake from puncturing your skin with it's teeth, since they have very small teeth. That way you'll have protection and full dexterity .

Gloves definitely give you a barrier! We have a video planned talking about handling non-venomous snakes later this year with tips on avoiding a bite!

Great snake for bug control…. And as curious of a person as we are of them… Had almost 15 of them living under my firewood pile. Nothing but bug carcasses… I’ve picked up and moved more of these guys then I can remember when I’m mowing or running the string trimmer. Never ever had one get jerky with me…

I don't remember garter snakes biting me or my friends, but the ribbon snakes we found in the tall grass around lakes were very bitey. It's pretty contrary to what I've seen on KZbin, but I learned to dislike ribbon snakes. My favorites were ring necks and smooth green snakes.

Since garters are much more common and in urban areas around humans, it surprises me that they aren't more docile like the black snake and king snake. I watched your other videos where you walked right up to and picked up black snakes and they never moved. Every time I'm around a garter snake it runs off and if I attempt to pick it up it starts striking at me. They are not friendly at all like the black snake and king snake.

I think a lot of it has to do with the way a species is adapted to live. Ratsnakes are big, slow, and rely on camouflage when caught out in the open - so they are naturally slower to react. Gartersnakes, watersnakes, and racers are all smaller, quicker-moving snakes that generally flee to cover and hunt prey more actively - so their defensive reactions are inherently quicker and more active which is why people interpret them as “aggressive”.

My husband recently found recently two garter snakes in our garage trying to go after two mice that are coming from our next door neighbour (we live in a semidetached house), luckily the mice haven’t entered our house, but one of the snakes had gotten stuck in the sticky trap. luckily my husband was able to loosen the snake and released it (from the trap) and take both snakes outside. Oddly enough the other day I had the same two little visitors (and I not referring to the mice) returned to the garage. Have you ever heard of snakes doing this same behaviour? For the record, I know my half of the house is well very sealed.

Just like many people, I have a fear of snakes. Nonetheless, I live in a fairly rural area (unbelievably, only one hour from New York City!), and we get all kinds of wildlife here: bears, foxes, turtles, turkeys, deer, mice, and snakes. I see a lot of garter snakes during the warm seasons but, although they give me the frights, I know they’re very good for the environment. So I just tell them, “You go your way, and I’ll go mine!” My dogs are very curious when they find them, but they instinctively know to stay away. I filmed this recent encounter with one of my dogs kzbin.infoMDKXtI_AEsI?si=WPxIczhxl0oq41yJ

That's exactly the kind that is living in my backyard. She didn't have to run away because I ran faster 😂But hold-on, I am confused. Why is she trying to bite you if that species is harmless? 🤔

Even if it does bite you it does little to no damage. I would go snake hunting all summer. I would just pick them up and look at them and let them go.

It means they should be around too
@lifeunderfoot48054 жыл бұрын
Riley Sanesh gartersnakes usually mate in the spring near their dens and that is the extent the dads are involved haha. If you’ve seen the larger females, the males are likely around too and there isn’t a super easy/reliable way to differentiate them without picking one up and carefully examining the tail.
