The weather this week was largely uncooperative, but when the weekend rolled around I had an opportunity to join some friends on a survey for the threatened Eastern Indigo Snake in South Georgia. The resulting videos contain some of the best herping so far in 2020!

So very cool to see some of these Indigos still around. I saved a 6 footer from some construction workers at a FL State Park that was being built in the '80s. Kept him a few days to make sure he was ok and then let him go back deeper in the same park where there were no roads. Good job!

Amazing experience! I was gifted a juvenile eastern indigo back in 2008 to use as an educational animal. He has literally grown up in my classroom, has been handled by countless students and teachers alike, and has helped more people than I even know overcome their fear of snakes. He is such an awesome animal to interact with and I take every opportunity I can to tell people about their species status in the wild. It's a lifetime bucket wish list of mine to see one in the wild someday.

Throughly enjoyed seeing these gorgeous animals! Its rare that we actually see them, they seem to be pretty secretive, but it is always a joy when we do. We are especially enamored of the indigos here on my farm. Many years ago our farm and surrounding forests were chosen for reestablishing indigos due to the abundance of gopher burrows and habitat. It just brings me such happiness to see them.

Wow. Indigos are the coolest snakes in the USA. In 20 years of herping in SE Texas I dreamed of finding an indigo and never saw a sign of one. Here, you guys find a bunch of them. Admittedly, I was at the edge of their range in that area, but not even one? Not fair!

I had a trio of eastern when I was keeping snakes what seems to be a lifetime ago now. Awesome snakes, wet noodles when you get them out. Make no mistake however that they can hit a meal like a ton of lead. Even though I never fed in the cage, my larger female would come out as soon as the door was open looking to munch something ha. All I had to do is get my hand on her, just touching and she was cool as can be. BEAUTIFUL animals and totally worth the conservation.

I'm really glad you showed this snake in the wild. I am very fortunate to own one (a male, all black phase). It is one of the most amazing snakes in any collection. They are true pets in the sense that they interact with you much more like a dog than a snake. I hope their habitat troubles in Florida get under control. Thanks again for the wild side coverage of this awesome snake.

Such beautiful snakes, I was born on Fort Rucker Alabama (affectionately referred to as LA lower Alabama) living on post we were surrounded by deep woods and every opportunity I had my dogs and I were gone practically living in da woods. I've interacted with every species but the Indigo always intrigued me the most but to my mother's ire I'd catch and breed snake's, I raised so many snakes in our quarters it was 'almost ridiculous' but really, really cool!!!

I learned about this snake species during my environmental science class in college and instantly became my favorite. Its imposing size totally belies its tame nature and harmless (to humans) bite. I love the way it hunts and its level of specialization within the Coastal Plain. It's a shame that its unique niche has also been the source of it taking human encroachment so poorly in regards to population numbers. They're also beautiful snakes -- jet black, almost iridescent scales that really set them apart from others.

Never minded being handled but after 15 years of me picking them up since early childhood I guess they got used to it. They were pretty habitual one liked the crook of a tree same one all the time another liked the back porch next to the goldfish pond. Miss that property.

Thank you guys for what you do. Speaking of gopher tortoises, not long ago we had a survey group come out to my plant and they scoured the whole 500+ acres we have in SC and found no sign of them.
