I found some of these as a child of ten years while camping in Northwestern Pennsylvania, Kinzua Dam area. I actually found scores of them one morning at our campsite, "Dewdrop" camp. They were all out and about crawling around looking for food. I fell in love with them! I took two of them home to keep as pets. One lived only a short time, maybe three months but the other, which I named Sylvester, lived for years. I made a terrarium for him with a pond on one end full of plants and grasses. I would feed him little earthworms, sometimes not so little. He would walk up to the wriggling thing, turn his head and look at it; then, using his little, white, sticky tongue, grab it and pull it into his mouth. He could eat an earthworm that was longer than him. It was so interesting to watch. He would shake the worm as he swallowed it down like an alligator shakes his prey back and forth. I'm now 62 years old and I have the fondest of memories of caring for him during those years. Every time I see a Red Eft Newt, I smile and think about Sylvester. I truly loved that little thing.

The spots on that one seemed small. I live in Massachusetts and sent a picture I took of one to add to a survey database here. It was hanging out in my backyard. Nice little creature. You’d be surprised what you can find if you pay attention to your surroundings.

I befriended one of these. Only a day later, I saved it from drying up because some careless kid was handling it incorrectly (the correct way is to wet your hand and put it in the palm). Yeah it bit the kid.
