Just something to note - I said at the end of the video that the food sources recommended are for aquatic species, but not for terrestrial species. There is one exception - Earth worms! Earth worms are great for both aquatic and terrestrial animals. I'll keep this pinned to hopefully clear up any potential confusion.

Hey! I have a fire salamander that just completed metamorphosis and I tried to get It to It with more live bloodworms and springtails but no results :( its been a week now and I'm so worried :( I collected tiny slugs and an earthworm, but the earthworm is to Big (is not too thick but quite long) so I'll cut It in three pieces or sm, do you recommend to offer It with tweezers?? Or out the pieces in water before so the stincky liquid disolves or sm?

Nice video. I'd like to see one for juveniles and larvae. I've spent the weekend catching daphnia in a local lake in preparation for some eggs I'm expecting to hatch shortly. I'd be interested in seeing what you do.

Would you ever consider adding scuds to that setup, and possibly ordering some live daphnia online shipped to your doorstep. Add half the bag and the rest to a large container so you can keep producing more daphnia, its what I use to do till my colony finally crashed.
@mikeayers89513 жыл бұрын
My eastern newts prefer blood worms. My chinese fire bellied newts love adult cricket heads, bean beetles and floating pellets. The fire bellies are far more fast paced and food confident where as the easterns are quite shy and slow.

Even if not using pesticides or fertilizers, feeding worms from outside generally isn't the best idea because they can still carry parasites Also there's a pet store I go to that does sell earthworms live

@TheSalamanderWilds5 ай бұрын
Just going to ask something obvious just to confirm, but do you have adults? If that's the case, it could be a water quality issue. They're know to leave the water in the wild due to water issues as well.

How about freeze dry white worms?
@TheSalamanderWilds Жыл бұрын
Hi! Freeze dried foods of any sort aren't really suitable for newts/salamanders just due to the fact they aren't nutritious enough.

What do you think of feeding eastern newts snails? I’m considering raising a colony of bladder snails as feeders if I get an aquatic newt. Though I’ve seen that newts eat snails in the wild, I’ve been unable to find much advice online. Are small snails safe, nutritious, and will the newts reject them?
@TheSalamanderWilds2 жыл бұрын
Hi! So newts can definitely eat small snails, but I'm not certain it's the safest thing to do. They would really need to be small enough to minimize the risk of choking or even impaction. That aside, depending on how fast those snails are moving, not sure how interested the newts would be. Overall, appropriate size earth worms are always the best option.
@aidanwarren49802 жыл бұрын
@@TheSalamanderWilds Thank you very much! I’ve already been doing research on raising European night crawlers as composters and feeders, but I’m always thinking about ways to mimic the newt’s natural diet. I’ve also been considering breeding slugs. An appropriately small species of what I think are meadow slugs lives abundantly just outside my house. I am worried about the potential for parasites, but I think that the parasite risk is reduced if I captive breed slugs instead of collecting them wild.

I know it's going to be a stupid question could you feed maggots to your salamanders and notes alright the cast Castor
@TheSalamanderWilds2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Not a stupid question at all. Maggots are actually a nutritious food and they're usually accepted by most salamanders. But I suspect these aren't as widely available as most other food sources.

Can you feed scuds and grass shrimp or are the shells harmful?
@TheSalamanderWilds3 жыл бұрын
Shrimp is ok, but I wouldn't use it as a staple. Shrimp are usually too quick and can escape newts and salamanders quite easily. As far as scuds go, if it has a shell I would avoid it. Shells can be harmful if they can't pass through.
