It's not like they would make no money just because Nintendo handhelds exist. The PSP did fine too. All they really need to do is not have weird SD cards. It's a shame the Vita died so quickly cause the hardware, especially the screen of the first model is still ahead of the Switch.

@@kwedl no but the handheld market is dying and the switch is already having a massive headstart... so coming in now with a new PSP would be disastrous and nothing about the vitas hardware can even hold a candle next to the switch. the screen was awful aswell, it had all the signs of a cheap OLED, namingly burn in risk, awful clouding (it's not called clouding on OLED but I don't know the term for it) and it was dark. the IPS screen on the Switch is way better

@Kevboard Arts Then we don't seem to have the same Vita. Sure of course the overall Switch hardware is better and i never said something else, but imo the screen quality is still better on the Vita. I like my Switch but it could be a little better in terms of screen quality. But i will stop here, because i don't want another flood of "everything that isn't the Switch sucks in every way" comments.

The solution to the issues around E3, (and I'm stealing this from Micheal Pachter) is to move E3 to a cheaper city like last Vegas. Las Vegas has a ton of show space that compared to LA is dirt cheap. This would lower the costs of hosting the show for developers and make it easier to accommodate the competing interests of the public and industry.

I've yet to understand why we should blame ESA when this is totally a Sony's decision and nobody is following them. (Microsoft and EA are still doing press conferences with showfloor around E3). E3 is not going to die because Sony won't be there, so for me it's more exciting to know who's taking their giant space. Most importantly i think Bloodworth is right, Sony won't skip E3 2020 so i feel they are totally doing cause they don't have much to show, PS4 is doing soo well they don't need to push it more, PSVR too niche to pay only for that platform.

Clarification : The reason so many PS4 controllers are sold is that Minecraft is still a juggernaut and sells like mad. 4 player co-op mixed with a juggernaut of a title and no good 3rd party options that cost less? LOTS of PS4 controllers sold. I've worked in a video game store for the entirety of the lifecycle of the PS4. More families buy PS4 over XB1 (XB1 is still seen as an adults focused system), and thus both Little Big Planet 3 and Minecraft being targeted towards younger audiences and allowing 4 player co-op sold a lot of controllers.

Not having an E3 kinda makes sense for Sony. Sure a lot of people always expect 20 new AAA announcements every year and if not they get angry. But they basicly showed off their 3-4 last big games that will come out this gen last year and i doubt they just want to repeat the same E3. They could do a third party only E3 but then there would probably be nothhing left for the others. It saves them money and weeks of shitpost about a potentially bad conference. I love how people always instantly try to bash Sony though as if they didn't release some of the best console exclusives alongside Nintendo.

Ahaha loved the controller discussion. I've got 4x DS4 controller atm, but owned as many as 7 over the course of the PS4 lifespan. You are right about the faulty day one DS4, I got 2 of those replaced free of charge back in day. And when you think you are set and have enough with 2 controllers, either one wears out so you buy a 3rd one "just in case", or a super cool color comes out and you can't resist getting it cause after all, it's what you use the most everytime you play!!

Correction: Kyle, the PC Version of Tomb Raider (2013) launched the same day as the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions on 5th March 2013. I think you might be thinking of the "Definitive Edition" which released on PS4, Xbox One, and again on PC, in January 2014. However, Tomb Raider hit the Black by the end of 2013 on its own, not because of the Definitive Edition. Interestingly, it wasn't Square Enix that pushed for the Definitive Edition but Crystal Dynamics, because there was stuff they had wanted to do in the game but couldn't because of hardware limits. They approached Square Enix, MS, and Sony with the Definitive Edition Proposal at the same time, in 2012, when the team first heard details of the new consoles, before anything like sales expectations not being met had even happened.

Sony can't release early surely. It's fine to say the Switch did it, but, it's not like Nintendo were going to disappoint many folk from the prior Christmas because they just bought a Wii U. Switch was a totally different SKU and so had the luxury of launching on it's own terms. Not sure a console successor has that luxury.

The very first E3 happened in 1995. The North American debut if the Playstation 1 was at E3 1995, I don;t think the console ever made any appearances at Sumer or Winter CES before that showing, even though the console itself was already available in japan at the time. It was the show where Sony basically one-uped Sega with it's 299 announcement, while Sega of America announced that the Saturn would have a surprise early fall launch at $399 dollars US. This basically created a lot of hype for Sony at the first E3. It was also the beginning of the end of Sega as a console developer. As not only was the early fall launch a disaster for retailers, as there was not enough inventory to go around. Sega originally planned on releasing in winter, but in fear of the PS1 looking better, they jumped the gun and pushed the release date back by months. This caused many retailers in the North American market to boycott Sega, as many of them would not get launch units on time. In may ways, Sega dropping the 399 launch price at E3 1995 was like when Sony announced the $599 launch price for the PS3, which ended up in disaster. Nintendo only brought the SNES and Virtual Boy to E3 1995, as the N64 was not ready to show off because of delays. The N64 did not make it's debut at E3 until 1996. Atari was also at E3 1995 with the Atari Jaguar and their planned Jaguar VR helmet and 3DO was there as well. Sony pretty much stole the entire show at the very first E3 and it also helped feed into the hype for their first console, in the North American markets. So, it is interesting to see Sony bow out of E3, especially given their history with the show. But at the same time, I do understand their frustration, and I can see them going in the same direction as Nintendo with the Directs.

I'd be interested to know if running servers is less environmentally friendly than disks. However, the main issue is still Internet access. Personally, my Internet is pretty good for a rural UK village. A lot still have ADSL where downloads of 50gb games would take days. However, I'm still capped from 8am till 8pm. So, if games became only digital, that cap becomes a problem. Plus, physical copies for consoles are cheaper, almost always.

Note: PS4 controllers are also compatible with PC through USB and Bluetooth so many of those could be PC gamers purchasing a gamepad for whatever game needs it. It should be noted, Xbox One controllers can also connect to PC as well.

Regarding Sony's upcoming lineup, I am not sure all those E3 2018 games will release next year. I think both Dreams and Ghost of Tsushima are very likely, since both of those games are in development for so long already. It's been a long time since the last Sucker Punch and Media Molecule games. Last Of Us is uncertain in my opinion. It's not in development as long as those other two games, Uncharted 4 came out just 2 years ago and Neil Druckmann was a director on that, so that means Last of Us 2 didn't start full production until two years ago, unless Druckmann worked on both Uncharted 4 and Last of Us 2 at the same time. So, I say there is a chance it releases next year, but I would not bet on it. The most uncertain release is Death Stranding in my opinion though. Kojima just started a new studio and was still looking for engines 2 years ago. He did say he wants to release it before the setting of Akira (which is set in 2019), so he would have to release it next year, but it's Kojima and he usually takes his time. So yeah, I would not be sure that all those games release next year. Death Stranding could even shift to PS5, which would make it a great reason to buy the new console.

I think console manufacturers are for sure communicating for mutually beneficial stuff. I don't think it was random that Xbox One and PS4 launched in the same month and had same architecture. It was definitely an agreement between the two and biggest third parties.

no it's just cheaper. taking already developed hardware, licensing it and slightly modifying it is way cheaper than developing your own hardware. the Cell chip in the PS3 was a mistake, Sony knew that after launch, because it was so expensive they had to cheap out on the GPU, making the PS3 being less powerful in the graphics department than the way cheaper 360. and the small advantage in CPU performance almost never mattered and didn't manifest in really any 3rd party game. the opposite was true, due to the 360 having a way easier to develop on platform, in part due to it being closer to PC hardware, games in 90% of times ran better and looked better on 360, even in CPU intensive games. Microsoft on the other hand had always used slightly modified PC hardware, the original Xbox was an enhanced Geforce 3 and a beefed up Intel pentium 3... the 360 was a tricore AMD cpu and a modified ATi GPU.

Correction: Jason Schreier's article "Sources: The PlayStation 5 Is Still A Ways Off" was actually published in April 2018 not this last week. In it, Jason debunks rumors that PS5 will be out in 2018 not in 2019 (although he does say that "it may not arrive until 2020." and that some devs did say that it's unlikely in 2019 like you said :) ). I can't believe how they didn't even talk about one of the biggest reasons the PS4 controller is selling like bonkers: Steam. Valve has release some INCREDIBLE updates to the Steam Controller that enables the PS4 controller (and any other) to be recognized instantly and natively. It's some amazing technology and I'm sure PC players that want to play controller games are buying PS4 controllers for that.

Death Stranding, The Last of Us 2, Dreams, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Final Fantasy VII Remake, WiLD, Concrete Genie etc. It's a lot more than just 2 games they still have upcoming, so I don't see that as an excuse.

E3 has become more like a season or holiday than an event to me... Most people watch it from home anyway. It's just a time when a lot of new stuff is revealed. With the internet where it is, there's no need for a live show. Sony figured out, people mostly just want trailers anyway.
