Thank you! We are about to get our first hives, and there are so many different opinions about how to feed these things. I like this method. It is simple and doesn't require a bunch of extra equipment or gadgets. New subscriber, sir! Looking forward to learning more from you.

Glad to see you back in the bee yard. By the way, surface tension may play a role, but it's mostly a vacuum that keeps the syrup from running out.

I was thinking the same, about the vacuum effect. Without an opening at the top to relieve pressure, the contents stay put.

2:1 in the fall - the extra fanning to dry 1:1 can add moisture in the hive and is not necessary. Also it is thicker so it will drip less. Do you treat for mites?

If the feeders go on top of the inner cover, and a medium box closing the feeders in, then the outer telescoping cover on top, allowing bees into that space, don't they glue the outer telescoping lid down and build some wonky comb from the top, making it hard to remove the outer cover later?
@PaulOtis7 жыл бұрын
doggone wasp at 5:37 . Up north we use a 2:1 syrup in the fall to feed. Helps them get the water content down. Do you have to wrap the hives for winter in Texas?

That's pretty cool, but you'll never get me to do that. My contribution to the bees is I keep everything pesticide free and grow a lot of weed flowers.

Lovin' the Bee Keeping Videos every time! It's amazing how it all works with Bees. We all need to be more aware of these guys , planting flowers, etc for them to visit, no pesticides, and trying over all keeping them safe. Sorry you lost a hive, but I know you will get it rockin' and rollin' in the spring. So when you lose a hive, do they just go wild, find a home in the area trees or . . ? Just amazing it all is. That new hive you just fed with the sugar water was pretty calm considering I believe you said was a swarm hive? Just blows my mind. Everything is doing well, thank you for the update, always on the edge of my seat! Sending Major HUGS to you and yours!! As always . . . Be Kind, Be Light, Be Love to one another, Help, Hear, Listen and Enjoy each other! . . . .Just Be! Love you guys! PS: Hey MaMa Kirbs, that Boxwood (or any other green) wreath On the Live Show Saturday is TOTALLY AMAZING!! Great Job! I know you don't like the camera, but it would be fabulous if you and maybe Adelynn do a video on the construct. Gosh what a beautiful gift that would make to give for the holidays. Just throwing it out into the universe. Love you guys . . .

I am keeping bees indoor in Utah: I continue feeding with sugar 2:1 or 1:1 water the whole winter because bees are indoors between 50-68F degrees, and they go outside through a clear tube in the daytime when it is sunny or warm enough to let them do that. Should I continue feeding with sugar water, or would candies/patties be better? Because of freezing outdoors, 99% of the bees are freezing, and not returning to the hive. So, I am picking up hundreds of bees from the snow, and keeping them indoors inside of a container. After a short period of time, I see 80-90% of frozen bees recovering and moving around. At that point, I put them back in the hive. Is that correct? One opinion is that old or sick bees are going out to die anyway, but most of them seem like young bees. Should I continue collecting them? Or do you think they might not be returning because they are intentionally going out to die?

Hi can I use plastic bottles? Thank you
@daddykirbs4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you can. I just prefer the glass. There may be some risk of the chemicals in the plastic degrading over time and leaching into the bee feed. I don't know how big of a concern that is, but thought I'd toss that out there.
@ulriceriksson3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be worried about chemicals in food grade plastic bottles. One concern though is that the vacuum that is created in the bottle can crumble it up and flood the hive.

I have noticed a disturbing trend with beekeepers, sugar feeders. In nature bees use nectar to make honey. nectar does contain sugars but not from cane. Cane sugar is the number one cause for diabetes in humans. if sugar causes diabetes in humans it cannot be good for bees overall. I suggest making syrup from pears, plums, oranges, figs or any other fruit you can think of. Add some water to the right consistency and then feed the bees with that instead. Yes, sugar water is cheaper. But do we want cheap honey that is worthless or do we want healthy bees that produce more due to nutrient content of provided food source? Just a thought. I will bee starting hives in the spring. Will NOT feed them sugar water without nutrient from fruits.
@simopr096 жыл бұрын
I tried no to feed my two Nucs in the spring. It almost starved to death. At the end of June, not only the the population didn't grow at all but they did not have a drop of honey. So I had to feed them syrup.
@TheSaltRose4 жыл бұрын
Probably gonna lose your bees then.

You dont feed sugar water when you have the honey supers on and they don't use sugar for honey..... bees thrive with sugar water... even human bodies don't recognize the difference between natural fruit sugars or cane... the body just sees it as sugar
@cralston12 жыл бұрын
Yup, what The Salt Rose said. Maybe you should start keeping bees first before giving out unscientific advice. There is a reason we use white sugar and not fruit syrup water. Take a bee keeping class, get a mentor, and learn the reason why.
@thetruth156real3 Жыл бұрын
If you had ever kept bees you would find that you had mould everywhere and dead bees. When a new colony is establishing itself it needs extra food. Honey isn’t any use as pathogens can be passed from other colonies. Sugar does not go mouldy and bees funnily enough are not human, so any comparison is ridiculous. Honey is the best food but they take time to make their own.👍
