As usual, a friendly reminder, use these as guidelines to your practice. I feel like it's not emphasized enough how many times a pencil, pen or computer (can't believe I have to type that) can magically work your art. Be patient in your craft and you'll get clothes done swiftly and efficiently! Also, thank you LinesSensei for the Tutorial. A lot of artists overshadow the part where they don't explain the types of fabric rather than art-splaining it. It makes total sense as to why certain clothes have sharper / organic lines.

Do you any more specific advice on line thickness when we draw the folds or the crumple. Like using the same width of the line art or use a smaller one, maybe adjust the width as the line goes closer or further from converging points?
@LinesSensei11 күн бұрын
That is an excellent question. No I do plan to go in depth and make a line art video in the future, probably not too far from now. For the way I approach line art, I think in the lines where it would indicate ambient occlusion. Line art or thicker line art can communicate a number of different things, firstly it can communicate shadow where an area would be darkest, secondly it can communicate division and distance from the surface that the line art is separating. So it's really going to depend what you are communicating with the line art you are applying.

@@LinesSensei I'll keep that in mind, thank you.

@LinesSensei11 күн бұрын
That is an excellent question, Firstly as a beginner you should be using a lot of references, that's an important way to build up your internal visual library. As far as how I do it, I start with a rough idea of where the bottom edge will be, and I make that bottom edge as a line that is a meandering repeating s shape. Making sure it has an organic and not mechanical rhythm, so every loop will be followed by a loop of a different size. That's how I approach it

Hi Sensei! do you think it is better to draw digitally or on paper when learning?
@LinesSensei13 күн бұрын
Great question. Shirt answer is they're both the same artistically, the difference comes in how each medium affects how you have to work, so for example watercolour requires you to work from light to dark and be mindful of colour blending and transparency, as well as how the watercolor will express the kind of paper you're using like cold press or hot press. Whereas gouaches and acrylics are more opaque, and let you work lighter and darker, but tend to lose some vibrance when mixing colours unlike watercolours. And then digital is incredibly flexible, but with that infinite flexibility comes the daunting amount of options in how your work will express. Even simple pencil on paper comes with rules like overworking an area will smudge and blend what you rest one so you're better off making each section complete a bit at a time, instead of working on the whole image, in layers or washes. What I'm getting at is that a lot of out of date artists will pretend that traditional media are different or better, and that's just not a supportable standpoint. The artistic skills I have work just as well when I'm holding a pencil, a stylus, a spray can, or a brush. What you need to decide is what media do you want to start with? (you can always change and learn another) and to be a realist, how much money you got. Because digital has a slightly higher initial spend, but has no real ongoing costs, where traditional media has very little upfront cost, but over time is more expensive by orders of magnitude. Also what amount of space do you have? Traditional needs a large working area, where digital can be fine with just an ipad on the couch. So have a think about these and lemme know what you reckon

@@LinesSensei wow I really appreciate the time you took to answer me and so clearly :') ❤️ I really want to dedicate myself to digital drawing, but I saw in several places that they tell you "Starting in digital is horrible because of the screen and other "x" reasons. .. you're not going to be a true artist if you start there.." that's much more depressing considering how strong the criticism is. As much as I try to stay productive with the traditional I can't and I tend to get more frustrated, at most I just make lazy sketches and that's it... but with digital tools I can advance more And the truth is that, with what you're telling me, it now makes even more sense for me to continue down the digital path. I hadn't thought of it that way, thank you very much!❤️✨

Oh people who poo poo digital tend to be people who are skilled in traditional and are afraid that digital will devalue thier skills in the marketplace. If they were better artists they would celebrate every new medium and every new artist. Anyone that doesn't is just trying to hold the world back to try and keep their own prestige. Ignore them. If they are willing to undermine your options and opportunities for their own insecurities, as such they are not someone who's advice you should seek out. If they disagree, tell them to hop on my discord and send me a message, I'm more than happy to explain it to them in greater detail.

Wait how do I balance straights and curves to a clothing that looks soft, and one that is meant to be harsh?
@LinesSensei15 күн бұрын
So the easiest way to remember, is soft clothing has rounded shapes for its folds where is stiff fabric will have a lot more angular corners for the shapes of the folds

I swear I been crying ab being bad at clothes praying for a miracle, and you have no idea how happy I am you dropped this. I always learn so much🥲

That's wonderful of you to say, I hope it meets your needs

I like all your tutorial so far, but in this one you only use 1 male body to explain clothing fold, I wish that could be more male example, thanks as always for your great work

Thank you, that's really great feedback. I'm aware I do tend to have a female bias when during figures, hopefully the methods of fitting clothing around objects should work whether that object has boobies or not. But I'll definitely try to include more male figures in the tutorial videos moving forwards
