I promised myself today that I was going to organize my workshop. The force is too strong, cannot resist the power of carving a gnome for the third time. I find your videos excellent, your a great teacher. I have faith that you will help me succeed in carving a piece of wood into some semblance of a gnome. ❤❤❤❤❤ I wish to share this short anecdote, I thought a carver would enjoy it. There is a man who has been driving around in an old fashioned milk truck sharpening people's knives etc for approximately 40 years. I see him once every 2 weeks or so. I've never needed to Services before until two Christmases ago when I received some lovely chisels from my brother-in-law. So I thought you might think it's funny as carver that I literally have my own personal sharpener. Yes I have tried not very good at it though. Yes I have practiced but you just cant beat perfection. Hes so sweet and never charges me much, even free sometimes. He knows ill pay him back in the future. Every so often I sneak him 20 buck. 🤫 then run really fast. 😅

Yes I am in my 50s I still find carving gnomes a magical experience. That's an awesome story about how you get your chisels sharpened. Thank-you for sharing. Have a great day. 👍

What a coincidence, yesterday I carved your original gnome and tomorrow I'm driving to Brooklyn NY to pickup a scroll saw! I think I have an idea for a great project now! Thanks!

It took me a few watches to learn that this project is a refrigerator magnet .9" thick. I had been wondering how to finish the back side because I was planning on making some for Christmas ornaments. I'm using 1 1/8" for a thickness and will still do them as ornaments. I'm using cedar and these are light enough for ornaments. Matt gives out the best burr tips. I didn't even know about the concave burrs let alone how to use them. Thanks so much, Matt

That's the great thing about cedar it's super light. Yeah those concave bits are useful 👍 cheers for watching 😊

Get some Pegas clamps for that scroll-saw. Expensive I know, but trust me, makes a world of difference.

Didn't know about those, they look awesome. Will have to save a bit of $$ first. Cheers 🍻

Thanks for the tutorial Matt! I'd like to see more about the scroll saws capabilities versus the band saw.

Yeah, have been meaning to do a video like that. Cheers Claire 👍

For me, it's a pita to change blades on the bandsaw so I used my scoll saw. I had made the blanks too thick (about 1 3/4"), so I changed the thickness down to 1 1/8". This was much easier to cut on the scroll saw with a #12 Mike's Shop blade. I have 2 band saws, a 14" Jet and a 9" Ryobi for smaller stuff. The Ryobi only cost $129. My scroll saw is a 16" RBI Hawk that I've had for over 30 years.

@shastastan1935 yeah changing bandsaw blades is the Pitts, especially if your changing sizes. 👍
