Our recently acquired 1972 Jeep Wagoneer 4x4 258ci L6 3 speed has serious mud tires on it which would be expensive to replace. They have plenty of tread left on them but they have some significant dry rot.
This video shows quickly how easy it is to reverse dry rot simply by using burnt (used) motor oil to return moisture to the tires that have dried out.
A very handy trick that can save you hundreds of dollars by getting more mileage out of older tires.
While used here on our old Jeep this process can be used on any dry rot tires.

Besides the oil trick the poorer folks who might need to wait a month or even a bit longer to save up but still have no choice but to drive on the old rotted tires I recommend doing half the recommended amount of tire slime or similar product even if the tires hold air. (Do NOT use fix-a-flat) This is definitely better then nothing and MUCH safer. Also quite effective if the rot is not too severe in order to buy some time to save up enough money. I also recommend for safety that you buy the first TWO tires for the FRONT as soon as you have enough then again with the second set for the rear. (Buy tires 2 at a time unless buying a single is absolutely necessary) Possibly put the 1st set on the rear depending on how many miles they have. Hope this helps someone as poor as myself LOL

I'm not sure what you mean by doing half the recommended tire slime. Tire slime goes inside your tire I don't see how that's going to slow down the tire cracking, tire rot.

@drevnykot
@drevnykot 5 жыл бұрын
There is a reason why the overpriced chemical stuff is ... well... NOT overpriced. Putting motor oil on tyre is not the smartest thing to do as motor oil dissolves rubber. Duh, even VASELINE dissolves rubber. Thus "thing" you put on has to be gentle enough to not destroy your tyre as OP destroyed his and protect from water and UV (that motor oil doesn't protect anyway) to not get dry rot despite "coating". Oh and did i mentioned that it has to withstand car wash and driving on a road on daily basis, and that customer count is very limited (R&D has to spread among fewer ppl)

This actually isn’t that bad at all. This is an old tire detailing trick. People still use it today. No a tire is far to thick to be affected by the softening and swelling by external applications. This only works where it tire drying. Not a true rot. It has to be caught in time and more importantly be a super high quality tire such as a mud tire or something off-road. Not a light weight tire either as they are less rubber and more polymer. If the dry rot is not in the sidewalls and mainly on the tread, then this will work just fine. Especially if you are looking to keep your trail rig working. The water based products only work “better” bc they do “dry” and allow less dirt to collect. That’s it. Tire shine for the majority of time has been oil based and minus the epa getting involved probably still would be

I'm looking to PREVENT dry rot for vehicles that get few miles a year on them. What do you think of ? It is designed for EDPM rubber seals in the brake system and is not a petroleum product and I can just reuse some from bleeding brakes. That's what I want to try. Thank you

Well just because you've done it a long time doesn't mean it's right. You've done it wrong for 40 years and your dad 60 years. Use a drop of oil because you want it to dry. The oil increases clamping force with the same amount of torque. Still torque to specifications because cranking them on tighter actually ruins rims and warps rotors sooner. So look up the torque specs and torque the lug nuts.

@RamblinVan
@RamblinVan 5 жыл бұрын
The rubber in synthetic car tires is comprised of crude oil elements. In more recent years tire mfg have started using natural products to create the rubber in their tires. I personally suggest using a 50/50 mix of canola or vegetable oils with crude oil (motor oil) to create a 5 gal bucket of tire lotion. Great for keeping your winter studded tires oiled and in good shape. Dump your oil mix from a 5 gal storage bucket into a small kiddie pool, wear some gloves and really give the tires a good lathering. Let the excess drip off back into the pool or into the bucket for later use. Store the tire in a large trash bag in your garage and it'll keep the dryrot away for years and years! I dump the oil in the plastic pool back into my bucket and use it again later. The excess left in the pool, just mop it up with some paper towels. Hell I even stuff the paper towels into paper towel rolls and use those as quick and easy firestarters.

To every idiot that posts smartypants comments about loss of fiction - the amount of oil discussed here is negligible. You cannot compare a surface oil spill puddle to whatever amount the rubber will retain after application. Now, the smarter comments have to do with the material properties of rubber, and that is up to debate, but not to be laughed at.

People please dont do this. It is not a fix by any means. Do you really think the crack just disappears? Once a tire has dry rot you should replace the tires. If you don't have money for new tires I suggest you probably shouldn't have a car and should ride the bus. Tire rot can lead to blowouts which can then cause an accident and kill or injure someone else all because you decided to put motor oil on your tires hoping it fixed the problem. May as well just slap some electrical tape on there to cover the cracks as well smh
@coltonwancho6571
@coltonwancho6571 4 жыл бұрын
Do not do this. I repeat this is unsafe on multiple levels. First the rot or slits are still weak spots that can fail.( Just b/c you can't see the crack does not mean they are not there) second oiling your tires will only decrease the coefficient of friction to the road. Again do not do this. It is unsafe.

@@everettstormy if you are willing to risk your life for a little bit long life out of a tire, first your life is not valued high on the list of things that are important and maybe revaluate how and where your spending your money before they get this back plan and save money to get a new set. It’s not about looking better. If you don’t repair the outter layers to protect the inter ones, then eventually the inner layers will fail. If you make the outter layers more useful like such, then it’ll protect the inner ones for slightly longer. May still be weak to heavy bumps and large rocks rocks as it was, but for smaller and weaker ones, it’s a hell of a lot safer than it was with the cracks. Think of it this way, you start to have a small crack in a window, if you leave it untreated it’ll eventually get worse. If you apply some resin or superglu between the crack, it’ll slow the crack down.

Why would this be a joke...I do this to my tractor tires every few months....what if that is his farm truck... Some of us people out there have property and have 4wd trucks that stay on the land...why go buy new tires that have good mud tread? The reason his 4wd tires may have good tread and are old and dry roted is because THE TRUCK DOES NOT GET MUCH IF ANY ROADTIME...LOL I guess this porsche guy assumes if you have a vehicle you must drive it on the road.... City people....lol

Can the oil do any damage. I know certain wax has an acid that can harm timber? Or anyone know any products or processes designed to restore old tyres that's not all asthetics but good for the rubber

DO NOT DO THIS! This is ridiculous and unsafe. Dry rotted rubber cannot be fix. I used to work in a rubber molding factory laboratory for many years. Used engine oil has solvent properties and degrades rubber. This may give you false appearance of rejuvenating the dry rotted rubber by making it "shiny" but it is not fixing the dry rot! Once rubber dries and cracks, the fibers separate, delaminate, and de-bond. it is also happening on the inside of the tire which you cannot reach from the outside. And lets not forget what one of the main jobs a tire has. Creating FRICTION between you car rim and ROAD! Do you think it a good idea to put a layer of oil in between the road and only thing on your vehicle that touches the road?! SMH I hate stupid videos like this that put people in danger. DO NOT DO THIS! If you do this, maybe you should also put used motor oil on your brake rotors and drums to keep them from rusting as well.... WOW! Maybe you can just coat the tire with black Rustoleum paint. That will make it black and shiny too. That has to fix it right?
@benfried3745

Rustoleum paint? That's a great tip. Brush on paint should penetrate better than spray paint. If this info didn't come from someone who worked in a rubber lab I wouldn't have given the advice credence......

Suggestion: Don't do a tire video, with the tire full of leaf This isn't a fix, you are putting petroleum based oil on a tire, it may look nice, but will damage the rubber even more.

THANKS SO MUCH! OMG, I'm going to FEELL like SUCH a FOOL; if this doesn't work. I love my inherited so called "old truck" Everyone always wants to BUY MY TRUCK. I usually drive another vehicle! It's not that old '90 something Silverado, latest comment from an interested party, asked how old the tires are, said they were getting dry rot. I SAID THAT IS WHY I HAVE AAA! I I don't expect tires atleast 10 years old to not ever be replaced! NO IT'S FKN MINE NEVER GOING TO SELL IT. I understand they don't make them like they used to but I am sick of being HARRASSED by guys who think that I'd be interested in selling it. Any other tips on how to make people stop with unwanted offers. I've lost atleast 3 so called friends who have called asking how much, and even when told NOT INTESRESTED IN SELLING fools say you don't drive it. I was nice enough to tell that person They NEVER WILL EITHER, BEST I CAN DO IS RUN THEIR DUMB ASS OVER IF THEY WANT TO BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO BOTHER ME AGAIN. I have also thrown rocks at another harassing idiot. When repeated asked about mileage I said I DON'T KNOW OR CARE, the owner of the place inspecting it, quickly took his stupid ass out to look at my TRUCK. I hope this hack works & I will buy tires when I need them but you can save me a few months with this I appreciate your help!
