When installing vinyl flooring using the glue direct method it is important to make sure the subfloor is smooth as possible. If the subfloor is left irregular and rough the vinyl product will conform to those areas and telegraph through the material making all the irregularities visible from the surface. Shawn

Yes, as long as the subfloor, including the linoleum, is level to the specs required in your manufacturer instructions. And keep in mind that if you attach to a previous floor, your new floor will only be as well adhered as your original. So if the linoleum is coming up in any way, that problem will persist after your new installation.

I've not used it myself, but look up the phrase "self leveling compound" (some put "concrete" where compound is). Most installer advice suggests this kind of product.

I just watched this after putting down a section of Mannington Adura. I definitely put too much adhesive and I don't think I always waited long enough for the glue to set. Will this be a problem?? Also, is it okay to apply adhesive and tile over sections of the floor where adhesive had dried up before I was able to place tiles? Or would I have to make sure the adhesive is completely removed...

Yes, a problem will occur with too much adhesive used. Remove as much excess as possible, and reapply using the guide lines on the side of the adhesive pail. Same for the dry stuff, you do want to remove it before installing with a new adhesive layer, otherwise you're effectively gluing your new floor to the old glue, not the subfloor.

It's for beginners, of course. What professional installer would need a primer on basic tile installation? The center of a room is best for DIY-ers, professionals will be better able to handle issues coming from starting at a wall. As for the necessity of glue, it's really not essential with vinyl tiling. There are floating floors which work quite well, securing the tiles with locking systems that actually connect more snugly than they do on the laminates for which they were invented.

Thanks for the video. Very Informative. But one question. Would I be able to successfully use dry back tile adhesive directly on to sheet VINYL floor? The old floor is in great shape. It's the original floor that came with the place when I purchased it, but I can no longer stand looking at it. Thanks! -Rick

Possibly, under certain conditions, and then the existing vinyl would work as a very nice moisture barrier for you. The conditions are: 1. The existing sheet must still be well adhered to your floor. If it's starting to pull up anywhere, this will not work. 2. The existing sheet need to be pretty smooth on the surface. You don't want something that's too deeply embossed or textured. That would hinder the connection to your dry adhesive. 3. You'll want to strip the wax off the sheet so that your glue can adhere well. So a conditional yes, and if it works that sheet vinyl will actually be performing a service for you! Tips right from the owner, through me, David. Thanks for asking!

Can glue-down LVT be installed over plywood that has been primed with TEC Multipurpose Primer?

It should work fine, Emily, as long as the floor is still good and smooth, and you didn't seal over grit or paint chips, stuff like that. But there is no chemical reason why that should not work.

You're right, JP, this one does go back. *We* definitely don't carry these anymore, and if it's what I think it is, neither does the manufacturer. If you want to get close, search for 18 x 18 vinyl tile stone look (and glue down, if that's important for you) then you should be able to browse through many sellers' options.

I don't recommend it. With any floor product, you should use the specific adhesives the manufacturer recommends. Then, if they don't have a specific product in mind, you should use the closest general one, so a general vinyl adhesive would be the way to go. - David

Acclimate: Nope! We're in America, where acclimate is the common use, both colloquially and in published writing. Acclimatise/acclimatize is more common in England and Australia. All three are proper. They all mean exactly the same thing, in any context. Acclimatize is the most recommended, even in U.S. dictionaries, but acclimate is the oldest of the three terms. They're about as equally valid as any three such terms could be. - David

Aluminium: It *is*! I had to look that up some time ago, after Kermode & Mayo kept discussing it. In the UK it's aluminium, pronounced al-oo-min-ee-um, which is a brilliant word and sounds like the future, and in the US the second i is dropped: aluminum, pronounced uh-loo-mih-num. I couldn't believe that we would actually have even different spellings of such a shared item as an element, but we do. The US spelling is older, but the UK more in keeping with the way elements are generally named, so again, each is equally valid. In technical writing the UK is taking over, and I'd gladly sacrifice the original term if the scientists could change the grammatical tide. - David

and how else would you install vinyl floors without glue there bud? this video is hard for me to watch cause i'm sure all installers do things dinnerently but at the same time.... you dont have to install from the middle of the room.... it's all math my friend... i just layed 33,000 sqft in a grocery store and 55,000 in a target store.... i can start from the front door and work my way through the thing without starting in the middle... this video would be good for beginners i guess
