Hi Rod, I'm glad I was sitting down when I started to watch this video and heard my name and such an amazing compliment from you regarding my work. I truly appreciate it and I am really humbled. You turned 5 fantastic pens in this video Rod. Your point regarding turning down to the bushings is so important as pens are such tactile pieces they have to be smooth with no rough edges that will irritate the user in time. @RHumphrey4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy! Thank you so much. You are correct. Both are Zebrano, one had an unusual knot and was cut a bit diagonal to the grain. Initially, the darker short piece was another exotic that ended up splitting, so I replaced it off camera with the other Zebra piece. the others were Padauk, Redheart, and Yellowheart. Cheers!

Love the pens. Pen turning is my favorite of all. I've made many a pen and pencil sets. Was giving pen sets for Christmas one year. The next it was darts, turned the same way. The dart were challenging, as they had to way a specific amount. The length had to be exact, for tournaments. They were always a hit, throughout the dart throwing community.
@RHumphrey4 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting. I hadn't considered the weight requirement for darts, not that I've ever turned any. Yep, pen turning is pure joy! Thanks, Bob

I don't blame you. His tools are always at peak performance. I think he uses CBN wheels. I use them also. But i bet he has a technique I'm not aware of.
@RHumphrey4 жыл бұрын
Really nothing to it. Slow speed grinder with a 220 grit CBN wheel on the side I use with a Wolverine jig for my bowl gouges, and the other side has a 600 grit CBN which I freehand my flatter tools with, like the spindle gouge in this video. 220/600 is quite a bit finer that most folk use, I think, but the edge holds up long enough. I usually just do a couple quick passes. Thanks! (right again, Uncle Moe! 😊)

first and foremost Mr Humphrey: Thank you for continuing to share your work with us. I always find myself looking forward to seeing what you're doing next, be it your wood carving with the... not Gnomes but the people you make. I always find your work beautiful, and I hope you're able to keep up with it for many, MANY years to come. But, the real reason I'm posting this time is your unintentional play on the eye, however fast you have the lathe turning from 4:00 to 5:00 and your shutter speed (frame rate for the camera) makes the pen blank look like it's turning slowly. I don't think it was intentional, but either way, I am fascinated by it.
@RHumphrey4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for your kind words, Galen. Much appreciated! Nice catch on the lathe speed/frame rate... very much intentional, and you can catch me playing with it on camera at times. I find the illusions interesting and I'm happy it translates well through the video! 😊

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your pen turning. Excellent workmanship! The finish looked like glass! How long did you let the pen dry after each coat of CA?
@RHumphrey4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Good question, I should have mentioned that. I sprayed (very lightly) each coat with a CA activator, so they were dry and ready for the next layer by the time I put the next drop on the paper towel, ready to apply. So really no wait at all except the 10 or 15 seconds that process took.

I turned pan kits but never put glue after sanding can you please tell me why you, and does the sanding remove the glue and still polish the wood thanks by the way brilliant finish
@RHumphrey4 жыл бұрын
I sand the wood to get it nice and smooth (500 gr) then the glue, thin CA first which seals it up great, followed by medium CA, at least six coats, which puts a nice thick layer that can be gently wet sanded to a hard and glass finish. Very durable. It's just one way of many to do it.
