I spent $500 on a Flir camera. It saved me on a job where we just installed a brand new ac, then water appeared on the bottom floor wall. The camera showed the cold spot starting on the very top of the wall second floor. Cut her open and found the wall guys hit the condensate pipe with a nail right in the center. The first unit ran for 8 years no issue until I came along and changed her out. Smh

I use a nipple and cap on both shower arm and spout, open water and check for leaks below to ensure the inside the wall piping and spindles aren't the source for leaks,

Just out of curiosity from where would one turn the water off to work on the inner handles parts? I know you didnt need to turn the water off in this case, but im just curious.

If you're removing the cartridges for that valve you'd have to shut the water off completely. Some valves especially single handle valves have built in shutoffs under the trim

Most apartments however need to be shut off in the mechanical room or at the meter. This shutdown will need to be scheduled 24hr in advance as it affects every unit supplied by that meter

Did knowing there was a leak help you replace the tub spout? No... You just replaced stuff until it stopped leaking... Terrible practice. If there's a massive wet spot on the ceiling... Cut it out. 1. It'll give you a better determination of what was leaking. 2. It'll give a chance for the space to dry, preventing further mold growth 3. It's more professional. 4. Chances are most things that would require repair would require you to open the ceiling anyways. *Smh*
