Easy Steamed Minced Meat Rice Cake (Banh Gio)

This is a simple no-fuss recipe for making Banh Gio, a Vietnamese steamed rice cake with a meat filling. Instead of making individually wrapped dumplings, we make one cake. It's much faster and super easy! Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Ingredients:
2 Tbsp dried black fungus slivers (also called wood ear mushrooms)
1/2 small onion
1 tsp olive oil
1/2 tsp minced garlic
1/3 lb ground chicken (pork or turkey)
1 tsp fish sauce
2 tsp oyster sauce (Please note correction to the video.)
1/8 tsp black pepper
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup corn starch
1/4 cup rice flour
1-14.5 oz can chicken broth
Yields: 8-inch round cake, 4 servings

150 g thịt gà xay (hay loại thịt xay nào tùy ý thích)
1 m. cà phê nước mắm

1/8 m cà phê tiêu
Bột:
360 ml nước
120 g bột bắp
30 g bột gạo
1-400 mi 1 lon nước sup gà hay nước sup gà, heo nhà nấu
Cho: 1 khuôn tròn 20 cm, 4 phần ăn

I love the shortcut for this Banh gio recipe of your channel. I though i would never can do banh gio anymore since banana leaves are so expensive in my place, southern california :(. Im glad that i can make banh gio easily with your new creative way of cooking. Thank so much dear !!!

Thank you Miss Tran. Sorry for slow writing this thank you note. In my 1st try, I messed up the batter mix (I did not follow your instruction in the video properly. I put water very slowly into a bowl of flour; played and talked to my grand daughter. Haha, I had a very lumpy batter). I still cooked them up and my kids-gkids-even my wife loved it. I did not let the failure stop me. Therefore, 2 weekend ago, I tried again. This time I was concentrate on the task (sent my gdaughter to play with gma). A little bit wiser, I add 1/2 flour into the bowl that had all the water. Mixed well. Then added the rest of flour. Mixed well again. It worked (looked similar to the batter in your video). We had a great dinner (even after Thanksgiving big feast), everyone enjoyed Banh Gio. Even my 2 year-old gdaughter had a small bowl. I could not believe I finally can cook Banh Gio. When my Mom was younger, she cooked Banh Gio for us. My Mom passed away 4 years ago, I thought I will never have this dish again. Great THANKS to you. This dish is a great memory-high sentimental value for me.

+Gpa Bui Hi! That's a funny story about your first attempt. Congratulations on your second attempt! The dough can be a bit tricky to make because you have to work quickly. Great job to you and I am glad to hear your family enjoyed it!! If you like the aroma of banana leaves as with the traditional recipe, you can line the bowl with leaves. I am so sorry to hear about your Mom and I hope making this dish brings back fond memories of her. Thanks for taking the time try my recipe and sharing your results. :)

Yes, typically the cake is pyramid-shaped and wrapped in banana leaves. The banana leaves adds a nice smell when you unwrap the cake but do not impart any noticeable flavor to the cake so I don't find it to be a must-have ingredient. If you enjoy the banana leaves fragrance, you can line the bottom of the bowl with leaves and then put a layer on top before steaming. Thanks for your question!

Hi Annie, glad you like the shortcut. The leaves are expensive and take time to prepare. If you like the banana leaf aroma, you can line the bowl with a large leaf and place one on the top. Still less work than wrapping the cakes individually. Thanks for your support

Hi. This is the version I am looking for (without the banana leave)! I made this once many years ago but it took forever with the banana leave so I gave up. I will try to make this again with your recipe as my daughter and husband loves it.

Hi Linda, I didn't show this in the video but if you like the banana leaves aroma you can line the top and bottom of the bowl with leaves, much easier and faster than wrapping them individually. Enjoy the recipe!

Hi Trang. I love BANH GIO va BANH KHUC. I will try them soon. That's good you used SPINACH instead of LA KHUC to make BANH KHUC. I will go crazy to look for it because I don't know the English name of LA KHUC. I'm living in NJ where the Vietnamese overseas community isn't very popular like CA, TX, FL or GA,...Thanks a lot for posting them

Hi Annie, I grew up in PA so understand about not being able to find Viet ingredients easily. That's why I've had to convert and adapt some of our Viet recipes to use what's available. Even now in southern CA, it's difficult to find certain ingredients like la khuc :) Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Alex, I don't find the corn starch/rice flour taste too strong. Part of that is balancing the cake mixture with the filling. I like more meat filling in my cake. If you enjoy the aroma of the banana leaves you can line the bowl with leaves, make the cake and then add a layer on top. Please give it a try and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Hi Mai, I have not used glutinous rice flour in this recipe. I think it wouldn't have the same consistency and be pretty sticky.

Does it tastes flour? coz as I know, the banana leave helps removing the flour taste from the cake.

Also, if my memory isn't failing me, I remember eating these cakes in Vietnam but they were wrapped in banana leaves, no? Would the use of the leaves infuse some sort of special flavor to the cake or is it not entirely necessary?

Are the black fungus slivers also known as wood ear mushroom? They're awfully similar in shape but I'm not gonna risk making the dish right now til I know for sure they're the same thing. Awesome recipe btw :D

Hi Xiao, you will need to use cornstarch and rice flour for this recipe. All-purpose flour does not yield the right consistency. Good Luck!
