In our first ever 20 Minute Terrain video, I'll show you how to create quick and easy wasteland barriers.
You'll need:
- Something flat to build on. Thin MDF or plasticard is easiest.
- Leftover sprue plastic.
- Corrugated cardboard sheets.
- PVA glue.
- Sand and grit.
Optionally:
- Some DAS modelling clay.
- Mesh material ("tulle" netting).
- Bits and pieces to decorate.
- Sci-Fi propoganda posters.
To paint, I used:
- Black primer
- Heavy grey dry brush on the ground, followed by lighter grey, then white.
- Gunmetal dry brush on the corrugated sheet, followed by Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust.
- Snow mix is cheap white poster paint + PVA glue 50/50 mix, then baking soda sprinkled on top.

I can't believe I never thought to use the inside of cardboard to make corrugated metal. It makes so much sense.

I really liked this. Thank you for sharing it. I'm building a On30 layout and making it a wasteland style. the cardboard is a great helper. the framing is also.

Oooh, that sounds interesting, and I have no idea why I wasn't notified of this comment ;( I've never heard on ON30 scale before either, but I have a load of HO/00 stuff up in the loft. Would love to see some WIP or finished photos when you're done.

Not sure where I sourced these exact ones, but there's a bunch of downloadable 40k posters floating around, like yaktribe.games/community/tags/posters/

The sprues are a bit noticeable - not really a problem, but I stare at them constantly as a part of the hobby and its hard not to notice them - I wonder if there are ways to make them less noticeable - maybe carve away the circular "plugs"? Either way, this makes a great addition to the table!

This is a very helpful video. What color did you prime the piece before painting?
@TabletopDungeon
@TabletopDungeon 2 жыл бұрын
Black. Then just a vigrous metal drybrush for most of it. I prefer terrain to be dark and gloomy, while miniatures should pop out more.

Love the idea would be nice for my ork stuff is there a certain type of cardboard brand u used when I try ripping off the layers of the ones I have it usually leaves alot of leftover layering
@TabletopDungeon
@TabletopDungeon 4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, no, it's hit or miss really. Rip apart every bit of thin cardboard packaging you find! Older tends to be better, the blue is more likely to have degraded. Could also be moisture, I store a lot of materials in the garage and it gets pretty wet out there.

so, do you paint the corrugated card black, then drybrush with silver? or paint it all silver then wash with black? I've tried various methods and none of them look as good as these ones
@TabletopDungeon
@TabletopDungeon 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Al! I spray with the cheapest matt black primer, then drybrush very lightly with a gunmetal silver, before a bit of typhus corrosion then ryza rust. Mostly, they're black :)

Brilliant! Thank you for sharing! Can someone share some ebay/amazon links (UK) for mesh material?
@TabletopDungeon
@TabletopDungeon 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Milan; the stuff I bought is bridal mesh, or tulle / tuille. It might come in different thicknesses, but this is cheap enough: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Very-Soft-Mesh-Tutu-Material-Fabric-Wedding-Party-Dress-1m-x-300-cm-IVORY/292937622469

@@TabletopDungeon thank you for really quick reply and the link! Do you know if this can be somehow "reinforced" to be used as mesh for walkways? Or do you know of something else that can be used for that purpose? I was checking out some wire meshes, but I'm not sure if I'm on the right track or if this is an overkill - it's definitely more expensive for smaller size.... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Steel-Woven-Wire-Mesh-Rodent-Proof-8-8cm-Metal-Mesh-Sheet-1mm-Hole/353097809814?hash=item523644ff96:g:kK0AAOSwysRe2jSn www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Steel-Woven-Wire-Mesh-filter-grading-sheet-Metal-Silk-Heavy-Gauze/224067637134?hash=item342b78cf8e:g:EXcAAOSwF7lb4o24

I don't think you could use tulle for walkways, but perhaps if you sandwiched it between some lasercut MDF, glued together. Sadly I 've been unable to find anything stronger that isn't a silly price, like you say, that mesh filter is about it. Another idea is some plastic sewing mesh, it's square with smaller holes, but I can't find it commonly available in the uk.
@Mikilangelo
@Mikilangelo 3 жыл бұрын
@@TabletopDungeon In the meantime I have found another potential solution - drywall mesh (tape). Tape has adhesive side and is good for glueing on top of stock or mdf to provide mesh texture, but if you can find drywall mesh that is not self adhesive then it can be potentially used as walkway if stretched in the mdf frame. Another discovery is interlock canvas: www.hobbycraft.co.uk/zweigart-premium-quality-interlock-canvas-10-count/574784-1000
