Miniature Wasteland Scatter Terrain for Wargaming or Tabletop Games.

This tutorial video shows how to make some simple hills and cliffs to be used for wargaming terrain or tabletop games. I made these as wasteland or desert terrain pieces, but as you will see in the video, you can easily change a few simple colors or details to make these fit whatever table setting you're using for your wargames.
I use a very simple and cheap hotwire foam cutter purchased from Amazon to cut the foam to create the cliffs, and fill out some of the volume of the hills. You could also create a very similar effect for these with a knife if required. Tin foil works great to also fill out some of the bulk of the hills, which reduces drying time for the homemade sculptamold I use for the final shape.
The homemade scultpamold is simple blended tissue paper mixed with plaster of paris. The mix is roughly 50/50, and then mixed with water to a pasty mix. Once dried you can then base with a black paint/PVA glue/Water mix to coat the plaster entirely, to prevent any white showing through, and finally painting with a base coat to somewhat match your final color for your hills.
For the wasteland look on these hills, I use a mix of playground sand, and Brown Battleground mix from ‪@TheArmyPainter‬ to get a really cool final texture. This is mixed with a small amount of dry pigment to adjust the color of the sand to the required color. I then add some larger rocks to each terrain piece, as well as an assortment of grass tufts to increase the level of detail.
The final details are some dead trees, and broken branches and twigs scattered over the terrain to really bring these wasteland wargaming terrain pieces home.

Hah, I only just aquired a wire cutter, much like the one in the video. Odd coincidence, but sure made me pay attention to the wire action! Seems much simpler than getting the same textures with a knife, for sure.

It's not a bad cutter, it's certainly more efficient than using a knife, and it has it's own sort of texture about it which isn't terrible as well. It's definitely handy to have around. Thanks mate.

These pieces look really good. Have you ever considered making your own pigments? Simply grind up chalk pastels in a small grinder. Chalk pastels are incredibly cheap and you can buy sets that are all natural colours, browns and tans etc. By mixing you can make any colour you want.

Thank you. I have considered making some pigments, and I've even bought a couple of the chalk pastels for this purpose, I haven't got to try that out yet. Gives a greater range of colors for way cheaper. Although the Landridge pigments are great value if you're looking for off the shelf pigments (at least the series 1 pigments are really cheap, above series 1 and I'm definitely trying to make my own pigments). Beautiful work, and I have to give you a big thankyou for your advice about Langridge pigments. They have a huge range of colours and are manufactured locally. Being pro quality pigments, they list their colours according to the Colour Index International system (for example, raw umber PBr7), which is great for mixing your own combinations and getting predictable results, or matching with different brands and mediums (eg: Liquitex ink raw umber says PBr7 in the fine print on the label). Citadel Paints will leave you guessing what's in Orc Dung Brown or whatever.

Love it! Re. sculptamold, I mixed my own using junk mail and plaster, bit chonkier than the regular stuff but it works out great. Gotta get me some of those pigments, I really like how they turned out! Re. Sand, construction sand might come in cheaper and has a nice variety of grit (last time I bought it, it was around 1 euro something for a 10kg bag, but that was a while ago - 10kg is a lot of sand!)

Hi James, I got this stuff from Bunnings here in QLD. It's usually in the trade section with all the timber, or amongst the other insulation products. The brand is Knauf Insulation - Multi-Use Foam Board in case you have to ask for it. Hope this helps out mate.

For this I used Langridge pigments. They are really good value and work fantastic. I just checked out the range on the website and ordered through my local art supply store. Prices vary depending on the color, but I found most were reasonably cheap. Let me know if I can help further. Cheers.
