A better option with the board might have been to keep the table top intact to prevent warping issues...or remove the underside and fill the interior with a piece of insulation foam, which would have let you vary the landscape quite a bit more.

My personal vision of a post-apocalypse takes a different route: while the planet is in blasted ruin, the civilization survives in orbiting space habitats. Except the decadent space nobility - living in post-scarcity comfort - have more or less left the survivors of the planetary apocalypse to their fate. These space men only come down when they want something. Their presence rarely bodes well for those just trying to eke out a living in the wastes. So in addition to all the normal staples of post-apocalypse fiction - mutants, radiation, warlords, and ancient war machines - you also have these high tech space aristocrats coming down and using the landscape as their playground. Pillaging ancient ruins for artifacts. Playing out competitions or conflicts with rivals (waging a war in the halls of the orbiting habitats would be unthinkable, but doing it in the backyard of lowly wasteland peasants is no big deal). Granting weapons and resources to one warlord over another, largely on a whim or to watch the fireworks. Hunting monsters - and wasteland survivors - for rare DNA, slaves, revenge, or sport. Basically, the rich and privileged being pricks, to the detriment of the little people just trying to make ends meet. Same as it ever was. I like this as a backdrop for wargames and the like, as it justifies a wide variety of forces to fight. Survivors, raiders, and mutants? That's standard. High tech warriors, robots, and genespliced monsters? That's a change of pace. You could use all manner of models for it, like Eldar or Necrons, while being wholly consistent.

The table looked to have paint on it before tearing it apart. Those table tops become uneven over time if something heavier is on it, so screw it. Use what ya have instead of throwing it out.
