I bought a set in the 70’s of I think 10 called General’s Kimberly Watercolor pencils, I still have a few. I also bought a random set called Art Advantage. I love using them for feathers. Another great use is to outline watercolor paintings so the marks dissolve. I really love the dolphin and I’m going to give it a try, as I’m a lucky student!

What I liked most about this video is seeing what you chose to include in your painting and what you left out. As a beginner, just looking at the reference image makes me feel overwhelmed; so many details! But you simplified it for me, thank you! Maybe create a video where you explain this a bit more?

Thanks so much for your kind and insightful comment! A video about simplifying the reference is a great idea!

Yesterday I went out and bought a 24 pieced set of Staedtler watercolor pencils as I only had a few Prismacolor wc pencils. I appreciate all the time you take to teach us. The problems I had with this were several. Using the water brush was really tricky as... I just don't have a 'pinch' anymore. The pencils I bought yesterday were what I hoped were quality pencils and they may be, but I sure had trouble with them. They look sharp but don't always leave a mark... even after re-sharpening. The biggest problem is me... lack of skill, confidence but I won't give up. I am determined to learn watercolor and think I will get better once I am confident in the materials I am using. Thanks again.

I completely understand the frustration of trying a new medium, especially when it just doesn’t work the way you hoped it would! Something you might try before diving in is just making swatches of each color-seeing how much pressure the pencils need to make marks, and seeing how the marks react to water, both on a water brush and using a regular brush. Getting to know the tools is SO helpful before diving into more in depth subject matter! Best wishes to you!

Wow. It’s beautiful. I love to see the transformation from pencil to watercolor. Have you ever tried the Albrecht Dürer by Faber Castell? They’re heaven and so rich in pigment when you put the water to it.

hi ViolinAmore I agree with you about the Faber Castell until you try them side by side. The Cara d'ache Museum (is what I have) they go down so much easier, the color is beautiful for both but for my old hands the Cara's are a better choice. I also like the Derwent, but the Cara's still win in my books. Good thing I bought them all before hubby retired. :-)

I was just wondering yesterday when you would be posting a video on these. The dolphin looks great! Now I am even more tempted to buy a set of these, even though I already have way too many watercolor pencils. One way that I like to get darker values is to pick the pigment up off the tip of the pencil with my brush. Or, if I know that I want to fill a larger space, I have a small, flat, plastic palette that I took sandpaper to to give it a slightly rough texture. I can just scribble the pencil on there, and the texture catches the pigment. Then I just add water and pick it up like normal watercolors. It makes it a bit easier and a lot quicker to get darker values this way, vs having to wait for each layer to dry so that you can add more pencil to the page.

Lovely demo! Can we have some more of these using some other brands of watercolor pencils? Just to understand if there are some real differences and how they influence the technique.

Thanks! I think before buying some more brands I’d like to play with these more. I still need to try all the different colors! 😀

I think one of the benefits of watercolor pencils would be the control you have putting the initial color on the paper, right? What would other benefits be?
