I would argue that the guitar work was ahead of its time. The guitarists Vanda & Young (yes, big brother of Angus and Malcolm) went on to become songwriters and producers. Their contributions to Australian music has been immense by any measure. 🙂

What great memories! As a kid riding my bike around Port Huron, Michigan with my transistor radio playing! This song and many like I just made you feel great as a kid coming across your little transistor radio. CKLW - The motor city, Detroit a.m. radio

The Easybeats were an Australian rock band that formed in Sydney in late 1964. Considered one of the most important rock acts in Australia during the 1960s, they enjoyed a level of success that in Australia rivalled The Beatles. They became the first Australian rock act to score an international hit, with the 1966 single "Friday on My Mind", as well as one of the few in Australia to foreground their original material. During their six-year run, they scored 15 top 40 hits in Australia, including "She's So Fine" and "Women (Make You Feel Alright)", with other No. 1 hits including "Friday on My Mind" and "Sorry". They broke up in 1969, and reformed for one tour in 1986. Singer Stevie Wright died in 2015 and rhythm guitarist George Young died in 2017. Georg Young was Angus Young and Malcolm Young's from AC/DC older brother and taught them how to play guitar I meet them through a family friend who had his own band and he had a girlfriend who new them from the hostel they lived in when first arrived in Australia. All five founder members were from families that had migrated to Australia from Europe: lead singer Stevie Wright and drummer Gordon "Snowy" Fleet were English-born; rhythm guitarist George Young was Scottish-born; lead guitarist Harry Vanda and bassist Dick Diamonde were Dutch-born. The band formed at the Villawood Migrant Hostel I was about17 around then same age as little Stevie born 1947 good times. Peace out.

I was a huge Stevie Wright/Easybeats fan in the 70s. In early 1987(?). I saw Stevie live at a leagues club in Griffith, NSW, Australia. He was playing on a tiny stage but to a huge crowd. He was also utterly wasted. He tried to do his signature flip and face-planted the stage. I was so sad for the guy. He was ostracised by the Australian music industry when it became known he was a heroin addict. He helped pave the way for so many Australian bands and artists, and the industry that profited from his talent completely abandoned him. He was a legend.

@lee here Yep. He was an entertainer, and I guess in his youth when he hit the big time, he was easily manipulated. The music industry can be a cesspool.

Yes it is. And it's because of them that Stevie's life went so wrong. First of all he was doing great 🎉 until his manager sent them to the UK.!! That is where it all went so wrong. No one , he was told that his music was not good enough for the blue bloods that was in charge of things that they knew nothing about.!! Stevie wright songs were just as good 👍 music as anyone else's from that country, including the Beatles.!!!! That shook his confidence in him self and his writing abilities. So he stopped writing. He was only age 16/18 years old. Not having any body to give him the guidance he needed and not having the mental maturity to see people who were out to use him for what they could get from him. N They took him down the road to alcohol. He would have been very happy 😊😊 to be in Australia and making his music 🎵🎶. Having all the best times with the girls chasing after him. His life would have been different.

Stevie Wright was the lead singer of the Australian rock & roll band the "Easybeats" from 1964-69. "Friday On My Mind" was their biggest hit. But they had a lot of great songs such as "She's So Fine", "Wedding Ring" "Women (Make You Feel Alright)", "Come & See Her", "I'll Make You Happy", "Sorry" etc. In the 70's Stevie pursued a solo career.

Hey thanks for doing this one bro, the live performance in '88 was just a sound check, hence no audience, but he gives 100% in his performance, so passionate, singing only to some seagulls and the camera crew.

This is a soundtrack. Of Australian rock and roll! The main riff in this song is a two guitar riff. Both George and Harry played it. One strumming up, &, the other strumming down. They had it down pat like clockwork. It was to give the listeners a sense of industry. That riff reminded you of the grind of work & how much it sucks. And, how it made you crave for Friday arvo to roll around so you could cut loose!

The 2 guys doing backing vocals are George Young and Harry Vanda, the Lennon-McCartney of Australian music. They are name checked in Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing. They also created a mystery band called Flash and The Pan which had some success, and George, who is the older brother of Angus and Malcolm from AC DC, did some writing and producing for AccaDacca as well.

I once owned all of the Easybeats and Stevie Wright solos up until 1989. I had vinyl and CDs. Sadly, I have none of them now, but I have an extensive library on hard disk with most of the albums. I have copied and collected most of my music library that was lost in fires and floods over the years. If I still had my vinyl collection, I may well have become a rich man. One hundred plus albums from the 60s through to the 80s. Many of them were limited editions, or special pressings, like the 1973 Quadraphonic vinyl of Dark Side Of The Moon.

They were really young when they started. The Easybeats (Beats as in 'beat music" like The Beatles name), I was lucky enough to watch them in Sydney on their 1988 reunion tour though this clip isn't from that tour. Excellent. Stevie was a real character.

Actually, the Easybeats outsold the Beatles in Australia at their peak, but Harry Vanda and George Young tried to evolve their songwriting faster than the market was ready to accept. Stevie Wright also, unfortunately, got too deep into drugs and was unable to maintain the momentum of his solo career. After the Easybeats broke up, Vanda and Young became a songwriting/production team. They also released several New Wave albums in the 80s under the name Flash and the Pan.

Not sure if you can watch it in the States but this is a great doco. Explains a lot about Stevie and Aussie rock n roll “Blood and Thunder: The Sound of Alberts “This two-part documentary looks back to the '60s and '70s and charts how Australia got its own rock 'n' roll sound thanks to the life-long bond between music company Albert Productions and The Youngs. Blood and Thunder The Sound of Alberts a tale of two families and the music they made. The Alberts - an elegant, well-to-do dynasty. And The Youngs - an unruly clan of 10-pound migrants from the tough suburbs of Glasgow. “

Don't feel pity for Stevie he was the most dynamic rock star If he had it all over again he would have stayed away from drugs and we would have seen a mercurial world chart topper. Do you know he had such a great personality and so giving of time to his fans . We have regrets in our lives and things we can't reverse.Remember him for all the good times he was my rock hero and even in tough times he gave his all He's been gone for 7 sad years and the worst thing is well never see him again Rock in peace star

Not sure if you remember reviewing Jimmy Barnes and INXS singing the song called Good Times about a year ago Nick. Well that song was a cover and this was the original band. Others have mentioned that Angus Young from AC/DC fame is the younger brother of George Young from this band. They started before my time but I know their songs and always enjoy Friday on my mind. Imagine the talent of the Young family! So so happy that these families immigrated to Australia. They have contributed a lot for the growth of musical talent to come afterwards.
