He actually made out a whole speech in English, seriously commenting on economic issues (especially on the problem of inflation), using almost exclusively Greek words which do all exist in the English dictionary.

The English word "as" is not borrowed from the Greek word "ως". The history of "as" and its Germanic cognates demonstrate that it is rather a reduced and grammaticalized form of the word "also". That said, the "so" part of "also" could be related to the Greek word "ως" in that they could both go back to some Proto-Indo-European form related to the demonstrative pronoun *só or the reflexive pronoun *swé.

Do you speak Spanish? You would be amazed at how exactly the same they are pronounced. Same spelling (1:1 with the Roman alphabet of course) much more so than English and other languages because Spanish has dry and full stops when pronouncing words. For example in English the word "NO" sounds like "NOUUUUU" BUT IN Spanish "No" has N and O and that's it. Just No. And all vowels have one goddamn sound. Like Greek.

There are 2 long speeches made by a former Greek prime minister Zolotas , long time ago . If I'm not mistaken given in an economic conference of some short of europe . These were supposedly given in English but in reality they were written in what is basically Greek and words in English that had a Greek origin . No one realized it at the time , as all of the participants thought its was just an economical speech given in English . You can look them up , its really interesting to realise how much influence the Greek language had in the making of foreign ones .

@@GeneralPet No, I know what Ancient Greek sounds like I wasn't taught wrong. Here are the most notable differences in my ears between Ancient and Modern pronunciation: The αυ (alpha-upsilon) diphthong, which used to be pronounced something \au\, however now it is pronounced \av\. Υ (upsilon) and Η (eta) used to be pronounced \y\ and \e:\ respectively, however now they are both pronounced \i\. Β (beta) used to be pronounced \b\, however now it is pronounced \v\. Γ (gamma) used to be pronounced \g\, however now it is pronounced \ɣ\. Δ (delta) used to be pronounced \d\, however now it is pronounced \ð\. These are the most obvious differences that would stick out most to a layperson who speaks English. As someone who knows a fair bit of ancient Greek, these things also stuck out to me: Θ (theta) used to be pronounced \tʰ\, which is just a breathier "t" sound, actually almost exactly like the standard English breathy "t" sound. Modern Greek pronounced this \θ\, which is just like the English unvoiced "th" sound in the word "think." Φ (phi) used to be pronounced \pʰ\, which similar to theta is just like an English breathy "p" sound, however now it is pronounced \f\. Χ (chi) used to be pronounced \kʰ\, which is just like the English breathy "c" sound like in "cat," however now it is pronounced \x\, similar to the "ch" in Scottish "loch," or similar to the Spanish "j" sound as in "jalapeño."

Native Greek here: Electron is Ηλεκτρόνιο - not sure what that translation was all about. Also friendly feedback: why pronounce the words twice for uppercase and lowercase when they will always have the same pronunciation? It was a bit weird after a certain point since you create the expectation that certain words do not follow this rule (correct me if I am wrong). Btw just randomly stumbled upon this vid.. Keep up the good work

They pronounced it slowly the first time to get a feel for the pronunciation and and I guess a little faster the second time to hear how it's pronounced more naturally? And cause they chose to do that, they wrote the uppercase and lowercase spellings to show us what they look like

"King" is "βασιλιάς" in modern Greek. So "β" /"Β"(βήτα) is pronounced like "v"/"V"
@demoman1596sh
@demoman1596sh 3 жыл бұрын
@@babitayadav4806 In the earliest stages of Ancient Greek, the letter β was pronounced like /b/. This sound shifted to /v/ in the mouths of Greek native speakers a long time ago, but not before Greek had a huge influence on Latin and other languages. As a result, we still use the /b/ sound for these words in English since we didn't undergo this sound shift. We pronounce the /h/ in words like "hubris" for a similar reason. Speakers of Greek lost this sound, and so have speakers of many European languages (like Italian, for instance), but most of the Germanic languages including English have preserved it. So we still pronounce it even though the Greeks no longer do.
