6:04 Small clarification: Damian and I wrote this episode together, and we both missed that indeed there are some cases when capital letters get an accent, and that's at the beginning of proper nouns and at the beginning of sentences! - Dimitris

Greek here, so not from linguistics (at all) but rather from experience with foreign peers willing to learn Greek: Depending on what vowel follows, Γ,γ and Χ,χ are phonetically quite different sounds: e.g. the Γ,γ in γάτα vs. in γύρος (or γιατί), the Χ,χ in χώμα vs. in χελώνα. A great example to showcase the same "i"/"ee" sound written with any of the combos of either "οι" or "ει, in one word: οικογένεια. I had never noticed that our "s" is "in the middle"! I always thought it's the same as "the Spanish" (but at the same time it pissed me off how they "over-pronounce" it xD - now I know it's because it's actually slightly different :) Great episode for anyone interested - well done and keep going! To the people learning Greek... Η υπομονή είναι αρετή! (Patience is a virtue!) (It's a fucked up language, I know - but not impossible to learn or even master ;)

Yes, of course. On this episode we only covered vowels and consonants only represented by single letters, that's why we didn't go into more detail about γ, χ, κ, γ (and sounds like μπ, ντ, γκ)... As for the s, I myself had never noticed before Damian pointed it out to me that yes, the Greek s is not the same as the German s!

Thanks for the input! Yes, we covered this within the same script and shooting session as this video, but the end result was too long (around 40 min) so we decided to cover the advanced rules in the second part where we explain what you just showcased. Hope you'll like the second part too! Thanks for the support :)

The Greek /s/ is also present in Dutch and European Spanish. It is also believed that Latin has the same /s/ sound originally, and so far only Peninsular Spanish kept it. The /sh/ sound in Portuguese Portuguese in some words (especially at the end of syllables) is perhaps a remnant of it. Brazilian Portuguese only has the /s/ irrespective of where the letter S is in a word. Meanwhile, the Greek /gh/ for gamma except when followed by /e/ or /i/ is present as a separate phoneme not just in Arabic but also in Belgian Dutch. Netherlands Dutch lost the distinction, and all /gh/, represented by G, are voiceless like the CH. The way it is pronounced is not identical to Franco-German guttural R, but is certainly related to it.

Ευχαριστώ πολύ! I loved this episode so much! ❤I have been waiting for something to help me with pronunciation. I appreciate you exaggerating the shapes so I can see and hear the different sounds better. I took my time to watch this one and will replay it multiple times. Interestingly for me the sound that’s giving me the most trouble is that intermediate or «redacted» S. I’ve already replayed from 10:26 about 50 times.😅 I’ve discovered that for this one; practicing it with a word like the example you gave is easier for me. The Gamma sound I’m finding easy, even though I am native English and I don’t speak Arabic so I’m surprised but happy! I like that I get to learn intermediate sounds as to me British English sounds way too harsh. My natural accent isn’t 100 percent British English anyway as I’ve lived in both Australia and N.Z so perhaps that has some subtle influence overall. I’m so thankful for this content. Your teaching is easy to follow and flows well. 🙏🏻 To me in one of the examples of the 3 different S sounds the ✖️and ✔️ sounds are slightly overlayed over your speaking but I may have only noticed that because I’m having trouble with that particular sound. -Sophie

Hi Sophie! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for your feedback as well, I value it greatly since I want to keep improving. If you're still having difficulties pronouncing that sound, try to make an "sh" sound, just like in english and try to play around with the position of your lips. If you move your lips to the normal, resting position while making that sound, you will see that you will get very close to the sound of the "retracted s". Hope that helps! Let me know if that helped you improve :)
