wow! Really loved this one. From communist youth, to youthful, joyful elderly ladies, especially loved their simple yet disciplined religious routines, like a daily cultivation of the spirit. Most uplifting. Thank you so much.

So many diminutives in Greek! I like these simple questions like, "What are you doing tonight?" rather than "What do you think of the European Union?" or "What is the meaning of life?" It encourages me when I hear native Greek speakers make grammatical mistakes.

Great episode, as usual! What I am curious to understand is this: I have lived in Greece for a while, and from this video (and my personal observations here) there is a Communist movement that is very active with the youth. For me, as someone who was born in an ex-Soviet country, and who was brought up in a family that suffered a lot during those decades, this is extremely strange (and kind of sad). Why does Communism have such a powerful influence in Greece? Thank you!

Good question. I'm not a communist so my answers might be a bit off, but it's what I have figured out by living in Greece. Despite the obvious fact that people either never learn from history, especially if it's that of other countries and not their own, or choose to think "this time things will be different" (you'd think, for example, that WW2 would be enough to deter would-be fascists around the world, but alas, fascism is again on the rise), you have to understand that, if communism in ex-Soviet countries is synonymous to authoritarian practices, corruption and a soulless bureaucracy, in Greece it's the other way around. We have had authoritarian practices, corruption and a soulless bureaucracy with capitalism, so communism, to us, looks like the opposite of what has already been tried - not at all the same situation as ex-communist countries. Greece was one of the first theaters of the Cold War (with our civil war right after WW2), and for a long time afterwards, communism was practically outlawed - left-wing people were marginalized, and because of our right-wing and nationalist history (and the dictatorship during 1967-74), communism has been a symbol of reaction to the "System", revolution, the alternative world that "could be," and that's why it's so popular with the youth, not to mention that because being anti-establishment meant being quasi-communist, many influential cultural figures of the last 60 years were either communist or left-wing. Communism is strangely seen as progressive, its more conservative aspects forgotten. I think that as Greece is ailing from capitalism showing its ugliest neo-liberal face right now, communism, even in its most traditional and old-fashioned garb that we're used to in Greece, is appearing more attractive than ever.

@@EasyGreekVideos To be honest this is probably one of the most detailed and informative answers I have ever received on KZbin, and I thank you for it! It does make sense especially considering just how hard was the Truman doctrine pushed in Greece during the Cold War, and the horrors of the Papadopoulos + Ioanides regimes. It is all the more interesting given the fact that it has been documented/said that Papadopoulos was placed into power specifically by Western interests (his membership in the "Ieros Desmos Ellinon Axiomatikon", him being a liason with a top CIA operative etc.). But I never thought that this oppression would result in such a skewing of the perception of Hellenic Communism as a liberating force. It is my humble hope that one day the Greeks may either modify Communism into a new positive force, or that they may see that Communism as we now know it is simply one side of the Authoritarianism coin (with the other side being Fascism).

@@rosualin8851 what easy greek says is the official narratieve, however, the youth knows absolutely nothing about what really happend in the past. It is the ignorance and revolt readiness of the young mind that the left takes advantage of and manipulates by promising good time, music, drugs and free money taken from the capitalists,I know be cause I have been there. It is the ignorance and stupidity my friend..just think of the flags and t shirts of commandante Che that they wave and wear while preaching equality anti racism and social justice but they have absolutely no idea how their idol and symbol Che Guevara thought of the blacks and that he wanted the homosexuals to be put to work in the road building breaking stones till the end..not to mention him saying that if his son was a homo he would have shot in on the spot..
