In the past we have focused on Spanish compared to Romance languages, but today we will look at how Greek sounds compared to Spanish. Can a Spanish speaker understand Greek? How does Greek sound to a Spanish speaker? Are they similar and why?
We will also explore the reasons why Greek sounds like Spanish, the different words that are similar in Greek and Spanish and the cultural similarities of Greece, Latin America and Spain.
This will include an exploration of the etymology of Greek and Spanish to highlight the influence of Greek into the Spanish language.

This sounds like Spanish but I can barely understand anything but it sounds like Spanish…
Okay I am going to take a deep look at the actual similarities between Greek and Spanish. Why are they similar? What are some words that crisscross in both languages? How come there are similarities between both languages? And other cultural things that we share with the people of Greece!
If we want to get technical Spanish and Greek share a lot of similarities because they share a phonetic inventory meaning that they have the same sounds. Greek and Spanish have the same vowel sounds and many of the same consonants.
For example in Spanish we have the sounds AEIOU, el burro sabe mas que tu…. AEIOU. Unlike english that you have multiple sounds for each vowel. Like A is it ey, is it A, is it a. In greek they have the same A, E, I, O U. Greek is also not like other eater European languages that are an amalgamation of unpronounceable consonants, Polish Szczęście, Like Spanish Greek has a soft structure of vowels!
But what are some words that crisscross? Well greek has influenced a lot of languages including English, but if it influenced a language a lot it was Latin!
Examples are words like poema, tema, problema are an example (and quick learning tip)
Some words also came to greek through Latin and by extension they are similar to Spanish words. Like Banio, Katserola, Porta
Other words like Tomates, Damatos have a different origin. This one come actually from Nahuatl a Mexican Native language that gave that word to Spanish and other languages
But what about culture!
Kosta, our subscriber was kind enough to share his insights! He said that being people from Southern Europe, Spaniards and Greeks share all the things that you shouldn’t do in these times of social distancing. They are happy welcoming people who love to socialize and party with others. In the same way Greeks, Spaniards and Latin Americans have a reputation for being temperamental and passionate. Maybe it is our soap operas give us that reputation! A lot of Greeks are very passionately religios even though most practice a orthodox christianity instead of catholism. These of course don’t speak about everybody in the countries but a lot of this things are true about our culture! Heck Greeks and Spaniards even look alike!
Is that Greece or Spain?
Of course in all the things we share there are a lot of differences and particularities in gastronomy, family and traditions, but overall both Spain and Greece are doors to the European continent and share a mediterranean culture that has partially passed to Latin America!
If you look hard enough sometimes we can find we share a lot with people who are far away, and our differences only add color and life to our world! That is what this channel is about celebrating our differences and what connect us!

This is funny, I have seen a couple Spanish v Greek videos and I hear many say Spanish is the Greek of the Romance family. I was born and raised in Athens then came to the States a long time ago. Americans are always saying my Greek sounds like Spanish. I think it's the speed, rhythm, and "S" sound. I have two stories, 1) I was once asked to help translate Spanish at a local high school because they honestly thought I spoke Spanish. 2) My wife and I were asked to leave a Mexican restaurant cause our waitress thought we were making fun of Spanish speakers. I swear to god. The manager came and asked us to leave, and when he told us why we about died from laughter. They gave us a free meal for the trouble, and it's become an inside joke as we frequent the restaurant have become good friends with everyone there. So while it sounds like Spanish to English ears, it sounds like gibberish to Spanish ears. LOL

not really. I'm from Spain and I can tell that Spaniards and Latinos don't have the same accent when speaking English because they don't pronounce Spanish the same way either.

Not really. The Spaniards emphasize the "s", the Greeks emphasize the "r". Also the Greeks tend to prolong the voyels at the end of the English words, and generally tend to pronounce "ch" as "ts". (I am Greek)

I'm greek and I was once in my city's center and I heard a guy speaking English with a greek accent, I thought "why is he speaking English to the waiter they both speak the same language?" ... But haha no then he turned to his friends and spoke Spanish lmao I was 100% sure he was a greek speaking English, well, he sounded like a greek speaking English to me

As a Spanish speaker, I approve of this. It happened the same when I heard Greek from afar, it does sound like a Spanish conversation you barely understand what they said. For those people that say, they are from different roots, yes they are, however, the similarity between the two languages is phonetical and not grammatical.

¡Somos αδέρφια! I've been teaching Spanish in Greece for years now, and I'm always amazed by how easily Greek speakers get into the Spanish language... And the other way around: I studied Translation and Interpreting at uni, I've lived in a bunch of countries and learnt several languages, but Greek is by far the foreign language I feel more comfortable with. I feel I can express myself almost as if it was my mother tongue... Absolute favorite!

In Cyprus we speak Greek but we also speak a dialect form of Greek (GreekCypriot dialect) and in our dialect you can hear the "rr" sound .When I worked at the International Airport of Paphos we had many Spanish tourists and they did look a lot like us Greeks , they were also very friendly and kind . That made me love the Spanish temperament and culture . I hope one day I get to visit Spain!

I am from Spain and I am grateful for the huge impact Ancient Greek Politics, Philosophy, Art, Language, ... had in our culture (not only in our culture, of course). One simple thing I came up with that helped me prove that they sound alike, is that you can phonetically write almost ANY word of European Spanish in modern Greek and vice versa. If you give Spanish words to a Greek written in Greek letters he's gonna pronounce them almost perfectly, same with a Spaniard with Greek words. The most difficult sound (for other languages) that Spanish and Greek share is j = χ. trija (phonetic) = τρίχα (cabello) juntos = χούντος (phonetic) = μαζί (in greek)

The few times I have heard greek people I had the first felling they were spanish, but as soon I get some attention and realize I understood absolutely nothing I think, oh, that must be Greek. Romanian is not difficult to understand sure the accent is a bit influenced by the surrounding countries but try looking up Romanian poetry or song lyrics and it will be a breaze for you.

I'm Bulgarian and even though my language is completely out of both spectrums since its slavic it still has been heavily influenced by Latin and Greek. And for Greek maybe even more than Spanish if we are talking about similar words and grammar. For example "krevati" in Bulgarian and "krevatia" in Greek which means bed, "porta" in Bulgarian and "porta" in Greek which means door, "svirka" in Bulgarian and "sfyrizo" in Greek which means whistle, "magia" in Bulgarian and "mageia" in Greek meaning magic, "kukla" in Bulgarian and "koukla" in Greek which means doll etc. In spanish to for example "Gratis" and "Gratis" in Bulgarian meaning free, "probando" in spanish and "proba" in Bulgarian meaning testing, "aeropuerta" in spanish "aeroporta" in Bulgarian meaning airport, "camion" in spanish meaning truck and in Bulgarian also "camion" etc. Even though there is many similar words the sounds are very different to Bulgarian If you compare greek and Spanish to it except we also have rolling R

The word Greeks use for the word door is porta and comes from Italian. The Greek word for door is «Θύρα» but Greeks use in complex words nowadays instead of the simple word. There are a lot of words like that. The word stop for example comes from the Greek word «στάμα» (stáma) which means something that doesn’t move. Nowadays Greeks use the English word stop in a Greek way «σταματάω» (stamatáo), it’s the verb for the word stop.

The cultural impact of greek culture is fundamental in European culture. the first real city of my country was founded by Greek colonists (Marseille / Massalia) long time before Romans came. The people who lived in « France » at that time were not only Gauls, but also Vascons, Ligurians and other people we do not really know, but the were all in contact with Greek culture. Gauls for exemple did not had their own writing system, the few remains of Gaulish language had been written in Greek alphabet. Greeks also made sus discover wine and philosophy a few centuries before the romanization. When we became romanized, more greek culture entered thru latin language, religion and civilisation.

I'm from India, and ancient Indian history points to the existence of Indo-Hellenic empires at some point in time. There was massive cultural exchange during that time and a lot of Greek art and architecture style is still reflected in some ancient and medieval structures from Northern parts of India and Pakistan. But I don't know enough about the Greek language to say if the linguistic influence from that time still remains. A lot changed about language in this region after the middle ages.

Because of the fact that Greece is a country that is an archipelago (Greek language origin btw) ancient Greeks were mostly seafaring peoples. Despite the Greek archipelago, the Greeks ventured the vast Mediterranean Sea & Black Ocean to seek what was beyond the horizon of their Homeland, thus finding & colonizing parts of Turkey, Croatia, Tunisia, Morocco, Ukraine, Algeria, Bulgaria, Southern Italy, Georgia, Moldova, Egypt, Libya, Southern France, and of course Eastern Spain. My parents lived in Cyprus for a couple of years and tried to learn Greek. They said it’s different from what they heard in Athens. My father is a native Spanish speaker and had trouble learning the language. My mother kept telling him to pronounce everything as in Spanish. However, even down to the rolling of the “r’s”, he just couldn’t get more than a flat sound. Listening to my mother read in Greek I hear the similarities to Spanish. Everything is regional so whomever may disagree with the idea may come from a place that has a very distinct dialect.

Problema, Thema, And Poema are actually neutral in greek not masculine. All words ending in ma in Greek are neutral words ending in os are masculine and words ending in i are feminine

They were neutral in Latin too, but neutrals were merged with masculines when the most common neutral and masculine endings, um-us, lost the final letter that differenciated them.

Nooo in ancient Greek is: boomen (ω is double o) eis teen (η is double e) plagian, so is: boomen eis teen plagian βωμεν εις την πλαγιαν (μποομεν ε,ις τεεν πλαγκιαν) ancient Greeks has different pronunciation than us modern Greeks. Ancient Greek pronunciation was better.

Oh hell yeah everytime I watch a Spanish series I get so confused bc I think they speak Greek 😂 And people from Spain also look a lot like us, we have so many similarities and our vibes are similar, at least that’s what me and my friends think. ALSO I don’t speak Spanish that much I just know a few basic phrases etc but I can switch speaking from Greek to Spanish with no problem, I literally speak it exactly like I speak Greek. I did this to a friend of mine who doesn’t know Spanish or Greek and he couldn’t tell that I spoke 2 different languages until I told him

I speak both Greek and English but i understand Italian and some spanish and now others so i try to speak with the accent of that language and people look at me, how did you do that if you don't speak the languages. i said i can imitate the accents too xixix I fooled people and they were like study the language they are going to get a kick out of you, true, but they already laugh when i do the Indian accent in any language lol

@@ConvoSpeak By the way the E with a tail is to indicate a nasal E sound. Polish has nasal vowels just like Portuguese and French and it is the only Slavic language that has nasal vowels. Polish has nasal E represented by Ę and a nasal O represented by Ą( as it used to be nasal A sound). The pronunciation of the 2 nasal vowels will differ depending on their position.

Hebrew has the same 5 vowels, yet it sounds different. I suppose it has to do with different consonants, but when a native Spanish speaker speaks Hebrew, there's definitely a noticeable accent (my team leader was born in Cuba, and I've known people born in Argentina)

Very interesting video. I watched the other ones that compared them that were made years ago. Yours is more on a personal level and covering a few things. I am of Spanish and Italian origin, My grandparents are from Southern Spain. There are some corrections to your video. Not all of Spain speaks with the theta sound. In the South its not pronounced as much..and in the Canary Islands it is absent. However, you are right as far as Spain and Greece sharing many things. YOu also have to realize that the Greeks colonized Spain, you did not mention that this is where we get the THETA sound from the influence on the Greek language. There are quite a few other words we share with them..tons. So yes Spain is the Mediterranean in culture as Italy and S France, however Portugal is not Mediterranean they are Atlantic. And yes you are right, many Spaniards and Greeks look similar The other thing that is interesting is the accent when one Spaniard is speaking English and The Greek..it almost sounds identical. Even more so than an Italian and a Spaniard. And yes the Italian and Spaniards can understand their languages quite a bit like 90%. Very interesting video. You will also find many places in Spain that look similar to Greece and vice versa. The Spaniards The Italians and the Greeks are like siblings and cousins. Then you add some Latin Americans that have gotten this from the Spanish such as the Cubans and Puerto Ricans, Argentinians, Chileans, Mexicans etc. BTW even some of our music and dancing has similarities. Spain is a very complex country. There are about 13-14 cultures that have come in and influenced. What annoys me as someone whose family is from there at these Celtic pride American wannabe Spaniards that have poquito Spanish blood and they get on places like Quora and start trying to say that basically, Spaniards are Latin because of the Romans but primarily Celtic..estan locos!! They have a hidden agenda for these trolls. I appreciate sites like yours where you actually want to get history correct . Spanish people are primarily Iberian , then Carthaginian, Phoenician, Persian,Celt, Viking, Roman, Greek, Arab, North African, Berber, Jewish, (some) Gitano, Germanic/ Nordic. - So look at what a mix of cultures came into Spain. 5:23 actually they are not masculine but neutural :P (and usually the ending in "-μα" (-ma) means the result of an action = Ποίημα -> the result of "doing" (Ποιώ actually means "do") but nowadays it's used in a more metaphorical way but it is still used in some complex words - not many Greeks know things about the endings of words and their meanings)

I'm Polish and szczęście doesn't mean "happiness" but "good-luck". It is pronounced 'shchén-shchyeh" using English transctiption rules. Polish for happy is "szczęśliwy" and happiness is "szczęśliwość" which are derived from szczęście. So in Polish happiness is related to having good-luck which is cool part of the language.

They are derivatives of Spanish. Mozarabe was one I had to study much, and read poems in, whilst studying for my first degree in Spanish language. I enjoyed it the most. I miss the old poems now. lol.

the greek had no just "contact" with the roman. the etruscan adopted the greek alphabet and etruscan and roman was heavily influenced by the greek as the greek was the highest culture back in that times and south italy and sicily was basicly settled by greek colonies and cities, most prominent naples = napoli or neapoli , this region was called "magna grecia" "bigger greece" and when roman expanded to the south all greek cities in south italy became part of the roman republic and the greek became roman citizens and later when the roman republic conquered mainland greece in 160bc , the middleeast and egypt aroun 30bc all greek became romans. the greek and italian became pretty much at the same time romans and had the same weight and privileges and only this 2 ethnic groups was automaticly roman citizens. while latin was the official language of the roman empire until 600ad, the most spoken language in the empire was greek because the entire eastern part of the roman empire was mainly inhabitted by greek. the roman empire was formed in 27bc by emperor augustus and lastet officially till 1453ad. when the capital of the roman empire was moved from rome to byzantium , the later constantinople, in 330ad by the roman emperor constantine the great, the roman empire was dominated more by the greek ethnic group and after the loss of the western parts of the empire, the official language of the roman empire switched to greek and this lasted till the fall of constantinople in 1453 when the roman empire and the last roman emperor constantine palailogos fell. while most italians lost their roman identity in late antiquity around 800ad, the greek remained romans till 1453 and even refer in some cases even today to themselves as romans. hence the roman had not just "contact" with the greek but the greek was basicly romans 150 years before the empire was born and from a very early stage of the roman expansion and became the dominant ethnic group which led the roman empire for more than 1100 years . greek and (south) italian and sicilian are basicly the same ethnic group as this 2 groups intermixed freely for centuries without losing prestige as both groups was not considered barbarian unlike basicly all other ethnic groups xd.

Both are syllable-timed languages and also have cultural points of contact (Roman Empire; Greek Empire, Greek colonies on the Iberian peninsula, etc.). That is why we also have a few similar words like piato (plato), kouniados (cuñado), banio (baño), porta (puerta) and many others. By the way "tomato" in Greek is not "damatos" but "domáta".... and truth is cultures have similarities and touching points, no matter which cultures. Greece hals also connections to middle eastern cultures, to "balkan" cultures and so on... many similarities. And another thing that comes to my mind that Greeks also have "churros". We call them touloúmbes.

You missed to tell that we have also 2 other, more common consonant pronunciations, like the: "γamma" letter and δelta letter soundings. For example, the spanish word "fuego" (fire), which is pronunced like fueγo and not like "fuego" as it's wrote for an english speacker. Also the article "de" which is pronunciated like "δe". The city of Guadalajara in Mexico, in Greek it's simply pronunciated just as... "γuaδalahara"!!! The difference in spanish, is that the letter "g" in many cases it's pronunciated like "h" or a hybrid between "γ" and "h". Also we have the common wet sounding "Xχ" greek letter pronunciation, like in the spanish surname "Jimenez"!!! The word you heard like "Barcelona", was "Parthenonas"... the Parthenon.

Greek and Spanish are loosely related in terms of grammar, syntax and vocabulary. They are connected to the extent that two Indo-European languages belonging to different branches are connected. However, the phonology of the two languages is almost identical. Those who do not see the similarity simply focus on the words themselves and not the phonetics.

The sounds are similar and the "S" and the "T" sound and vowels sounds are the same. Many other similarities. On paper its completely different but speaking sounds are similar. Greek origin words are present in Spanish.

furthermore it's not only the sound of letters that makes the two languages sound alike. It's their phonetics as well. When a greek speaks spanish and vice versa all he has to do is pronounce exactly the way he speaks his own language. The tongue is posed exactly the same, the sound too, and this has not to do with each single letter, it has to do with overall the sound, the tone one speaks.

I was some years ago in the center of Athens and next to me was a group of tourists from Spain. When I heard them talking I thought they were Greeks and they were speaking Greek, but I didn't understand their Greek. Nonsense Greek!1 It took me a few seconds to realize that it was not Greek but Spanish. It's really funny. But what is certain is that any Greek who learns Spanish and any Spaniard who learns Greek will have absolutely no problem with pronunciation.
