Jamaica has a large Asian population both east, mainly Hakka Chinese and south, and Desi mostly from the south of India. All came as laborers in the sugar cane fields when slavery was abolished. the races came together in the fields mixed, matched, and traded cultures and biology. Some of the food you ate that day originates in our Asian communities. Vegetables in Jamaica are normally steamed or stir-fried and very lightly seasoned, Stir-fried cabbage with butter, green peas, and a little shredded carrot, and of course, the curried goat are all from the Asian community. Jerk pork, has its origins, in mixing, African and Indigenous cooking techniques and flavors. Stewed oxtails started with the Irish and the Africans adjusted it to match their flavor preferences and local ingredients. Rice can be served at least three times a day, Breakfast, lunch, and dinner so we have a lot of different ways to make it. sometimes the rice is the whole meal. Nothing like a pot of rice porridge for breakfast or conge-like rice stew made with broth onions, garlic spring onions, and bits of chicken. for lunch and of course, rice will be served at dinner. Jamaican food is a laborer fusion cuisine. Mixing the Taste of African, European, Indigenous, Desi, and East Asian laborers. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The base of the oxtail is browning, ketchup, and soy sauce. We use soy sauce in brown stew chicken as well. Jamaica has a Chinese population, people of Indian descent. Our motto is "Out of Many One People." With all these great cultures, African, Chinese, Indian, Syrian,and Jewish cultures coming together its no wonder our food taste good. Filipinos eat ox tail in a peanut sauce in a dish called kare kare. It's braised, then pressure cooked with crushed peanuts, peanut paste/butter achiote, Chinese eggplant (sitaw) and long beans.

The Door is by far the best Jamaican restaurant in Queens. Smoke house is second. But they are the same company with Smoke House is a spin off from the Door. Enjoying your review.

The jerked pork (we call it barbeque in the South & yeah, we barbeque whole pork - pigs here) looks good. I don't know if I ever had oxtail growing up on the farm, but haven't had it since!! I don't like real spicy things, but it looked good. You two showed more interest in the jerked pork & rice&peas and oxtails & butter beans from The Smokehouse than the chicken dish from The Door, perhaps someone had gotten full, no? Was the Door originally called The Village Door! I'm born and raised in Jamaica Queens and this is the only door that I know of, I left in 2001 but I do remember that NYC has the best food!!!
