Oh my goodness another great episode! Not to brag but I’m Greek and I was introduced to all these foods from birth😂. My parents both in their 90s still going strong. My mom was always working outside in her garden, used to shovel the snow in the winter, she always looked for opportunities to be outside. Made her own tomato sauce and had a great morning routine of reading the Bible and being grateful. And always kept her house clean and organized, home cooked her food and she went to work. I’m trying to be like her but sometimes I’m exhausted. And she also raised 4 children. Amazing!! Thank you Mel for all your great guests!❤❤❤❤

@f.r.1998- Not expensive if you eat less. Not expensive if you ditch the expensive gyms and just walk/move. I'm eating less these days because of surgery, but it has been liberating to realize that I just do not need to eat all that much. Hence I can afford kiwi and organic foods. My post surgical diet omits red meats, but I can have fish/seafood. Yes, they can be pricey. I watch for sales and freeze portions. I also enjoy organic tofu, organic eggs. Not all that expensive. I hope this helps you to see that you do have options. I keep a 3-ring binder with what works for me and can add any new information. Wishing you good health ~ Diane

I take a picture of every plate I make. And I weigh myself every morning on my body composition scale. And I also take mental notes if my body has regular bowel movements. If the scale is stuck on the same weight for several days I assess if I had too many carbs. I NEVER eat anything in a box or bag. Fresh whole foods. I cook 3 times a day from scratch. Never tempted in supermarket to shop middle aisles. In past year I've lost 30 lbs by losing a few ounces at a time. I'm not playing around with this journey of wellness. I arrange my plate and eyeball measure what I put on it, check for a good balance of nutrients, and never go over 4 oz protein portion of lean chicken, beef, pork or fish. I grow in my organic back yard garden and even in winter, I've got window boxes inside under lights growing salad greens and kale, Swiss chard. I've healed my fatty liver (steatosis) - just had a fibroscan and ultrasound of liver. I'm now going into another phase since losing 30 lbs. (20 more to go to reach 155 lbs). I'm 5 foot 10. And 74 years old. I'm going off drinking cow's milk and have been 80% gluten free. I'm going back to making sour dough gluten free bread. No dairy or wheat. And eating more fermented foods. I take 28 different supplements on a time schedule throughout the day. And I'm having my next blood work done on January 7th. I can't wait to see how I've done in past 4 months on my A1C and lipids. My waist & hip sizes are way down and my pants are falling down. I am thrilled and totally motivated. I eat all the foods you talk about and grow many of them, too. Thanks for validating everything I've intuited to do to save my life!! I have no one to accompany me on this healthy journey and I don't need anyone to. It would be nice, though to discuss these topics. That's why I listen to podcasts like this. Thank you. xx

My skin cleared up and my hair got healthier too. I also gave up rice and potatoes for a while, but now I can eat whatever I want on special occasions or have a cheat day once a week. I drink loads of different teas ( varied throughout the week, matcha everyday, cinnamon in my coffee every day, i appreciate every sip, I tell my kids it’s full of the good guys, shooting off the cancer wannabe cells as it makes it way through my body. That’s a take on he Dr li described it. I make and eat my own gelatin, I chop raw garlic really fine and eat, I could keep going on. Unsweetened yogurt is good for you. It's easy to make it at home. You don't even need a yogurt maker. You can use a thermos. Buy some yogurt starter or just use fresh store-bought yogurt (plain, of course, with no added gunk--just milk and the yogurt bacteria). Heat just under a litre of milk to a simmer, then let it cool to 110-112F. Mix in the yogurt starter according to directions or mix in a quarter cup of yogurt. Pour it into a warmed one litre thermos, seal it, and insulate the thermos with towels or sweaters or whatever you have. Leave 24 hours. It should have "yogged" by then. You can then use a quarter cup of that batch to start the next one. Saves money and all those plastic tubs.

I don’t mind some of this information; however, it’s very privileged and I think that should always be addressed. A lot of people have to worry about how to get any food on the table and into their bodies and this information just blindly passes over all of that. I think we should focus on overhauling our society (in so many ways) first so that everyone has access to nutritious foods in general. We need to do better.

My frustrations were that even on the nights that I didn't take insulin, my blood sugars were in the 260s in the morning so how effective was the insulin. I changed my diet adding more vegetables One week without insulin my blood sugar reading was 167, about 2-3 hours after eating. Its not where I want to be but I expect that it may take a little more time for my body to respond and get me down to normal levels without insulin. WOW

My opinion is to find your own health journey. Diets or suggestions by another are not a one size fits all. Afterall you know you best. When I stopped following others (it was just too confusing) I succeeded. I discovered foods that create optimal health for me, by collecting data. I did the elimination process. First to go were the foods I knew were not good for my body (sugar, soy, flour, seed oils including margarine, juice and anything processed). I eliminated them. Then I recorded every food I ate to discover which foods caused cravings and which did not. I refused to give into the cravings, I just collected the data. When a food caused cravings I eliminated it. No need to torture myself. For me, it was fruit, peanuts, nuts (except macadamia), bread, fried foods, and anything sweet tasting including stevia and diet soda. I now live cravings free (I thought I was an emotional eater- turns out I am not) and healthy. By doing this it has allowed me to be in tune with my hunger signals. I found an exercise I love and the rest is history. I have no diseases and am on no medication and I am happily in my sixties. Peace to you.

@@PollyDVB The “whole book” about limiting eggs in the diet because of the cholesterol in the yolk was tossed in the bin about ten years ago. If your physician is still telling that story, he/she hasn’t been keeping up with the research and is woefully out of date. The yoke has fat & cholesterol that can affect your blood lipids, but not as much as we previously thought. Just b/c the information in a book refutes certain ideas does not mean it is providing the most accurate information. Wow, I've never had non alcoholic fatty liver explained like that. I went whole food plant based 4 years ago and my fatty liver is all cleared up, it's like a miracle. I didn't even understand my past fatty liver issue enough to fear it, so I appreciate the explanation. 15:55 to 17:41 timestamp. Thank you!

Make one change at a time. That’s the sustainable way for me. Trying to make all the changes at once would be too overwhelming. I can start with the change that’s closest to my current lifestyle and then build from there.

Thank you, this was great! We need more of this, often. I love Dr. Li! Everyone needs to be reminded of this advice because a lot of older adults were never taught this and we've been doing it wrong the whole time and didn't teach our kids either. We can learn and change but we need to keep it at the front of our minds. We eat and drink everyday and one small change every week and every month will have a great impact. I love it, Mel, thank you.

As Mediterraneans and Middle Easterns, we Turkish people have a very broad food culture! We love our vegetable dishes and lentils, beens, and chickpeas dishes... we don't eat meat every day... reducing carbs and sugar and balancing these variety of dishes would be enough, I guess. Pomegranates, tomatoes, and all sour fruits are my favorites, I guess it is the same for all Mediterraneans:) We are lucky to have so many options, dishwise in Turkiye. I find that the European diet is very limited!

Heard this episode with my 9 years old. She took away more things from this than what I advise her on daily basis. I feel that healthy food habits and choices should be ingrained at early age. This morning she decided to sweeten her parfait with honey instead of maple syrup.

I am glad you are getting the word out on this topic - I just wish Dr Li was more specific regarding olive oil - make sure you are getting “PURE” Olive Oil - they are not all the same, lots of fillers.

I eat from the glycemic index food chart, stayed at 30 and below.. 6 small to moderate meals a day and 1 of those meals was before I went to sleep. The meal was a fatty protein and an efa.. I went from a size 14 down to a size 3. I drank no less than a gallon of h20 and incorporated weight/strength training everyday. Training was within 2 hours of waking, ate meal 1 within 1 hour of training. Most of this info came from a certified personal trainer and the glycemic index advice came from a friend of mine. I married the 2 and I never felt more alive in my life! This journey started 30 years ago. Nobody will ever convince me that I can't eat before I go to sleep, I lived it, experienced it for myself. What matters is what you eat before bed! Protein and an EFA is Key! And I never ever counted calories, I counted G.I. numbers. EFA"s(omega 3's) activates brown fat, and this is why I had it with a protein at night. OMG do not cook with olive oil! Too high of heat turns to trans fat! Use Avocado oil!
@gigid960621 күн бұрын
what did you eat at night? anything with omega 3s or flax? or chia, or a pill. That part I didnt understand. And please, can you share the book or glycemic list you used, because i went online on and off for YEARS and different ones said different things, which kept me from using any of the conflicting info. If i found One person where this actually worked I would be happy. And i guess no pasta or bread, then , right? How about the barilla bean pastas ("yellow box"?)

While listening, I made my dinner salad. Red leaf lettuce, spinach, cabbage, grated carrots, cilantro, alfalfa sprouts, kimchi, cherry tomatoes, avocado, and smoked salmon. Home made dressing: apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil, avocado oil, garlic, sea salt, pepper, sage, thyme. Nom!

'Really learned from this. 'Had a couple of questions. 1. I was surprised when Dr. Li promoted tomatoes. There is another internet doctor out there saying that tomatoes are a 'lectin bomb', and should be avoided. Why are the opinions so contradictory? 2. Do all plastic water bottles shed? I ask because I notice that the plastic used in a 500 ml bottle is much thinner than a 4 liter bottle. There have been issues with water quality in my area, and I am afraid to drink directly from the tap. If I buy a 4 liter jug and pour it into a (real) glass to drink, am I ok?
