I’ve explored the Indian food scene in a number of locations around the world, from India to Suriname to my hometown of Miami. But now, I’m heading north to check out the Indian dishes in an underrated and unassuming foodie destination. Come with me as I enjoy some amazing Kashmiri Indian dishes in Salem, New Hampshire!
Joining me on my New England adventures is my boy Keith Sarasin, who is a 3x best-selling author and the chef and owner of Aatma Restaurant and The Farmer’s Dinner! We’d be dining at Kashmir Indian Cuisine in Salem, New Hampshire, which is just under an hour north of Boston. We’d be eating lots of northern Indian cuisine, including Punjabi and Kashmiri food!

Inside the northeastern bar-style restaurant, we started with aloo samosa chaat and chana chaat. They came with tamarind chutney and a tomato chutney with onion.
The samosa chaat was creamy, crunch, sour, and acidic. Chefs always balance fattiness with acidity. Adding the tamarind chutney made it even sweeter, and I loved the chickpeas and the onions as well.
Meanwhile, the chana chaat contained lots of dahi (yogurt) and a nice sourness from the green mango in it! It was so good, but I needed to limit myself. I had a lot of eating to do!
Back in the kitchen, watched the chefs prepare a number of dishes, including tandoori shrimp, naan, and baingan bharta. Then, back at our table, we had Kashmiri naan, garlic naan, baingan bharta, tandoori grill, Bhindi Masala, chole, basil coconut shrimp, chicken tikka masala, raita, and Punjabi biryani.
We started with the Kashmiri naan, which contains raisins and is a little sweet and went well with the basil coconut shrimp. I loved the sweet, thick naan and the rich coconut flavor. The baingan bharta is a mashed, creamy eggplant dish that has a bit of heat and a nice, smoky flavor.
Next was the bhatura, which is like a giant, flaky puri, which I tried with the chole. It was so flaky and a little oily. It took me right back to my time in Delhi. It really was to die for! Then, they brought us some thick and fruity mango lassi. It’s a great palate cleanser!
The garlic naan with the chicken tikka masala was next. Chicken tikka masala is the perfect Indian starter dish for people who are just starting to try the cuisine. Then, we jumped on the bhindi masala, which is an amazing moist and crunchy okra dish with coriander, cumin, and fried onion.
Next, we tried the tandoori grill, which contained shrimp, lamb chops, and two types of chicken. The lamb was unreal! I loved the charred, smoky flavor of the meat, and the shrimp were just as good. It’s the perfect way to make meat!
The biryani was next. It’s known as the king of dishes and is typically eaten with your hands. I could see onions and bell peppers in it. It also contained rose water and was so fragrant and had a medium spice level. Adding the gravy from the shrimp added an amazing sweetness!
Finally, we ended with ras malai and gulab jamun, two popular Indian sweets. The gulab jamun is basically a milk dumpling that’s fried in ghee and drowned in a sugar syrup with cardamom. It’s so sweet and fragrant!
The ras malai is my favorite Indian sweet, which is paneer in a sweet and creamy sauce. It also has a floral flavor and contains saffron. Mixing the two was insane!
