The 5 o'clock bell is for the primary students to tell them it's time to go home because in Japan children are independent and just hang out at parks when the want to and they aren't allowed after 5 o'clock

Tips for your Japanese Grandmother; Japanese people get really happy if you bring "omiyage" / souvenirs from trips, usually food. Every town usually has a special kind of cake/biscuits/special food that serves as a good omiyage. So if you go on trips outside of Tokyo you should always buy something for your Japanese Grandmother to show that you're thinking of her. Or you could ask your Canadian relatives to send you something from Canada to give to her. Or you could give her some of the candy that Nasties send you? A phrase you can say to her in Japanese is "Itsumo Arigatou gozaimashita" (Itsumo - always) It's a good way to say thanks for her going out of her way to be helpful. I don't know if you have to battle someone yet ;) I'll ask my Japanese friends if they have any more know how on how to get a Japanese grandma.

The Tale of Spudgster's Tail (& Back): He was pure white while he was a pup, but alas that was not enough. One day he pondered, "I'm fabulous...I must express it!" So he went to Martina and said, "Mom, I need color like you...just a bit." So, they spent a day out and decided on GREEN. However after many days, Spudgster said, "I don't like it. How about aquamarine?" Martina agreed and they headed out the door. As soon as they were done, she exclaimed, "You're a mini Falkor!" Spudgster, by many, was adored nonstop. Even a Big Bang member copied the color, who goes by the name of TOP. To end this tale, there is one thing left to do. It's for the Spudgster to say, "I need to make a poo." THE END.

Japan is so dangerous... Not because of criminality, earthquakes or anything like that ....but because everything is soooo cute and then you have to resist buying everything!!! Always have the hardest time going to Daiso and not buying everything !! And I try to avoid toys stores. Toys stores have rements, rirakuma goodies, Hello kitty goodies, and many other things ....and everything is just so adorable. Japan is totally dangerous for your wallet. They should tell you that when you land to Japan.

Martina! Just so you know, if you go to some place where you sit so formally, you can tell your host that you have bad knees and can't sit like that. Just try and then sound really apologetic and hesitant like 'I want to buuuut...' and usually the host will tell you to please relax, so you don't have to kill your knees. I have bad knees and my professors aways tell me to say things like that. something like 'sumimasen... watashi no ashi ga itai n desu kedo...' which is like 'I'm sorry... my legs hurt, but...(please let me sit normally)' Also, for your neighbor, she might really like something canadian and you tell her its from canada. I feel like I'm super serious here cause I'm watching on my phone and writing a comment on my computer xD Sorry for long comment... Q: Martina have you found a new place to get your nails yet or you planning to go back to korea for sunny? If you guys see a gusto (ガスと), you should go in and try the black jello sundae! it's brown sugar jello and its unbelievably yummy!! Spudgy was white before he was green before he was blue! Blue is definitely his best color though~

I've recently subscribed!! I love the Eat Your Sushi series. The mysterious music at 5 o'clock is a chime to tell children to go home because it's getting dark. I'll be moving to Japan in June, I hope I can see you guys, I'll be living around 30 min away from Shibuya.
@seastranger_
@seastranger_ 7 жыл бұрын
I know this video was uploaded over a year ago.. but just wanted to mention one thing. The primary purpose for the chime or music played before sunset is to check up the function of a radio transmitter which is set in local communities (like in parks) for disasters or emergency situations. It's nice how those cities and towns made it with such peaceful sounds and naturally let people assume that it was for telling children to go home.

Nice you found such a NICE PLACE :D !! You got very lucky with this house, it's like the dream place...omg ! For your sweet sweet neighbor, be "careful" about giving gift, or else she will give you a gift back, and then you, and then her and...escalation of gifts XD LIKE BOWING !! ha ha ! When I was in Japan, I realized how much gift culture is important, so important it never stops ! In my experience, every time I felt I wanted to give a gift to people who helped me a lot, I realized that well, they were happy about it, but after that they kind of felt obliged to give me a gift back. Which was absolutely not my intention ^^;;; ! So I suggest to be very nice with her, smile, the way both of you are actually, and do what she says so she doesn't feel like what she told you is not interesting. She explained you how to pack the cardboard for the garbage ? Then do it PERFECTLY, she will feel very satisfied to see you do it the way she told you :) Also respect the neighborhood (I know you will) they will notice it and like it very much. Maybe the best gift is the "souvenir" if you go somewhere for tourism. I used to buy some for my colleagues, and they would return me the favor when they would go on vacation, but it wasn't as "suffocating" (if I dare say it this way...) as the gift we usually imagine. And also, the music you hear at 5 o'clock every day, is...sorry to break the mystery (I'm sure someone explained you I didn't look in the comments) but usually there's an announcement ! It's like "kids, it's getting late. Be a nice child and go back to your home." kinda message :) The message also changes depending on the district you live at. So if you're between 2 districts, you will hear 2 different messages at the SAME TIME which is creepy ^^;;; Last thing, I really like your videos. I just discovered your channel recently because I am studying Korean, but seeing how you discover Japan really makes me feel happy, because I went through the same kind of culture shock :D I really hope I can go back soon (I'm waiting for the concours to give me an answer !), and they maybe we can meet. Your positive attitude is contagious ! Thank you so much ;) !!

He (the Kirby) could have been a wonderful anxiety aid - like when Martina is having a really bad day with her EDS or something, she could have it to just squeeze as hard as she wants and just snuggle with it. When I'm having a bad fibromyalgia flare day, a huge soft stuffed animal is always helpful.

+Sarah Gauthier I have heard so many Italian get mad listening to the recipe of spaghetti Napolitan or to the name of itself. Their anger always make me upset, but if Italian becomes tolerance to accept foreign style Italian recipe, I will miss stubborn and proud Italian. Anyway, what I want to say is "Italian is nice people, but please don't tell them about the Italian recipe which Japanese arranged".

Im italian and yes,i find it retarded,but not because of the ketchup itself. I mean,it makes no sense calling something with one name if it is something else. Not that i care if someone use ketchup or tomatoes or whatever,i dont eat any vegetables,i just find it stupid calling it that way,no one italy would use ketchup (well,ok someone sometimes does it)

I have a similar neighbor.. and have met similar sweet ol' grandmas whom I want to take home in my pocket with me.. (and i also live in Tokyo, and am a foreigner from Hawaii) Best way is to keep up with holidays (give cards, small baked treats, flowers.. etc) and also if you go on trips to give her omiyage (small gift from the place you went). Japanese people love gift giving, it's probably in their nature to be generous people. Welcome to Japan! I'm so glad you're here. I've watched you for years :)

Fruit baskets are really popular gifts here because fruit is expensive so that's a gift idea for your sweet neighbor. Also, you could make something homemade and wrap it nicely and I'm sure she'd love it. When it comes to gift giving here I've noticed it's mainly just important to be thoughtful and try to put some thought into it (like, just for an example, if she has a garden gnome collection in her garden and you notice it so you get her something garden gnome related). Also, hand it over with both hands. I think that's a thing in Korea too so I'm sure you already know about that part. :D

The bell sound at 5 o'clock is a sign that tells kids that it's getting late and it's time to go home! It's different from every place, it might be a children's song or just an alarm like sound! ^^

Always go with fruits as gifts! Not the typical fruits that you buy and you put it in a plastic bag but a fruit basket! Since you're in Japan, it would be easy to find beautiful pears, apples and watermelons to show your appreciation =) If you want, you can always buy heart shaped or rectangle shaped watermelons since it's expensive XD As for Spudgy, he used to green =D The color green suited him a lot!

I agree, giving a present to the lady would be a good idea. But I don't think wagashi is suitable in this case. If anything, it should be the last present for her because she must eat it regularly and could be judgemental about the quality (on the inside for a moment). I would suggest you get her some yougashi (western sweets) that is available in Japan.

+AVS Ah that's actually what I was going to ask. They seem like good people. I think you guys would get along. Too bad I won't be in Tokyo until the 13-14th. I was actually going to move to South Korea, but life decided to put me in Tokyo Japan randomly- and later you guys announced you were moving! Life can line up like that sometimes. Do you guys think you may want to start a business in Japan too? Like a artsy coffee shop or pet cafe? Oh, also, I totally get the difference in volume in Japan verses elsewhere. I lived in Nagoya for a yearh, and I remember trying to record vlogs, but being embarrased. People are also more offhandish about being around filming too- so you try not to make the locals uncomfortable. You also don't want to seem like a loud gaijin. Well, anywayzzzzz, hope I can eventually see you guys and yell "EAT YOUR SUSHI" at you! XD Why not, right? lol. I'll treat you guys to some good food or drink if the fate allows.

Is it possible to buy like..pre-made ikebana arrangements? She might like that? Or is there a flower that does well without tending?? Because a potted one would be nice ☻ A friend got my grandma one when she stayed with me at her house over the holidays and she loves it. It was an orchid but I don't know if that needs tending and I do know that they don't flower long. Maybe is there something native to Canada?
