Phew, your ease of playing this iconic song by the great EC, was made to look easing by your approach. You broke this down into bite sized chucks. I tried it, followed your approach, played each section over and over until I was happy, joined the sections up, put on the track, and, thanks to your teaching, nailed it second time round. Very cool tutorial James, thanks for simplifying what is actually a very smoking hot and difficult to get it right bass line for the Eric Clapton version. This looks deceptively easy, but the original was played by Carl Radle at Criteria Studios in Miami, my home base way back in 1974 when I was just learning how to play....and if you know anything about Carl, he was a master bassist who put a fantastic funk groove on this very simple tune...While it is true that Bob Marley wrote and recorded the hit original song, Eric Clapton ran with it and made it his own. Both of these versions have survived decades of listening and analysis and are just as fresh now as the day they were recorded. And Clapton was coming off a heroin addiction, go figure... I found it very refreshing that you play the same gear I do: Sire p7 4-string bass, Mesa Boogie amps, Mark Bass speakers, Aquilar amps....you obviously know your tone! I've listened to this brilliant lesson was making breakfast so I need to go back to it and I don't think I've missed the answer to this point of my pondering.... I've never played any reggae but I had it in my mind that I would struggle because the base is played generally on the offbeat. is this complete? gobbledygook and the bass is not always on the upbeat. maybe that's the kick drum? My trouble with this. if it is true that I should try to aim for the offbeat is it? I would spend more time thinking about beats and offbeats than what I needed to play. 🤔🤔🤔

There are lots of rhythmic variants in reggae from simple to much more complex. Learning to place notes correctly in a genre of music is a really important skill… so I encourage you to look at is a style agnostic technique to work on, as it will improve everything you play.

Sorry,Vincy, but you're the one being the prick here. No one claimed anything was better or worse than anything else, nor did anyone ask for your opinion on it. James is teaching a popular version of this song, no harm, no foul. It doesn't have to be "the best", or anyone's favorite, it's just a bass lesson. You could clearly see in the title it was the Clapton version, which you already knew wasn't the version you liked, so why are you even here, except to jam a stick in the spokes ? (and then pretend you're the one being mistreated, LOL!)
