I was a firefighter who used to live mountain biking. Then got Injured and couldn't walk for months. 7 surgeries and many years later, I wanted to get active again. As you might guess, it was difficult. Add breathing issues from years of eating smoke... Biking was almost a lost cause for me. Then I was gifted an ebike. Life changer! Unfortunately, the company is out of business and Its battery went bad. I suppose I can try to rebuild it this winter. Anyway, My hope is that legislators consider people like me when making their laws. ebikes do give people back their lives and help them get fit (If they decide to reduce the assistance anyway).

Yes I agree with the above comment.... I have back issues and need a motor on my bicycle otherwise I wouldn't be able to go out on it... On a side note I built my own electric bike and in my opinion it's better cos u can build it how u need it (bigger/smaller battery/motor) and it's a lot cheaper!!

Follow the High Voltage channel and watch his work with the ToSeven DM-01 & DM-02 torque sensing Mid-drive motors. Good DIY option to trick out an existing MTB. Battery mounting is tricky if you have full suspension. The Bafang BBS02 & BBSHD motors are excellent motors but are Cadence Sensing which are good for 30 mph Commuting.

Here are a few of the trends that we saw in the upcoming ebike offerings. 1. More batteries integrated into hydroformed frame down tubes. 2. New battery offerings beyond Lithium Ion. 3. Lots of effort to streamline and add form to function in frame designs. 4. Fewer external wires and cables showing. More internal wire and cable runs. 5. More effort to make ebikes indistinguishable from non-assisted counterparts. 6. Some subtle and smaller console displays being built into top tubes. 7. Lots of throttles (class 2-3) seen on ebikes. 8. 7-8 speed Shimano shifting remains the standard on low to middle price range ebikes. 9. Lots of color display consoles. 10. Some implementation of Bluetooth connections to dash consoles. 11. Some future implementation of remote phone home diagnostics. 12. Configurable pedal assist levels beginning to show up under on under $2000 ebikes. 13. Hydraulic brakes will replace cable pull brakes as the standard, even on low end bikes. 14. Thicker disc brake rotors for ebikes may be on the horizon to deal with the higher speeds, greater brake temps and higher bike weights of ebikes. TRP was showing 2.3mm rotors - very robust.

Now I have a mokwheel basalt st and a mokwheel scoria. I will NEVER buy anything else again. GF and I travel cross country on these and these are the ONLY ebike I would trust. I can charge extra battery with solar and inverter on trailer while riding. Almost no time lost. On top of that we can play Xbox and watch TV in areas that don't even have power. Starting in may 1st in Finland we have to get insurance for any kind on electric vehicles over 25kg or 25km/h under 1kw including moblility scooters. imo 30kmh is the sweet spot in ebikes/scooters so you could replace your car/motorcycle without being too slow in the city area and its quite doable, with the bicycle infrastructure here. still to buy bike/scooter to save money only to get slapped in face with monthly insurance bills(quite expensive..just my opinion, im broke) is a joke.I feel bad for the elderly who use 10-15kmh mobility scooters or electric wheelchairs..

I predict more e-bikes with torque sensors will be sold in 2024. The key to their success is to make sure the bike's gearing is high enough to eliminate ghost pedaling clear up to the 28 mph assist level. Ghost pedaling just doesn't work with a torque sensor. They are great for us older ones that ride e-bikes for exercise and not just as motorcycles. (i.e. throttle, cadence,..)

In Europe bikes and ebikes are more often used as a use mode of transportation instead of just recreation. Especially since many of the older cities are not designed for car traffic, but smaller horse and pedestrian traffic allowing bikes to easily be used. I would like to see designs with car bike racks in mind, i.e. how about a step through ebike with a companion car rack for hitch mount, that can handle two ebikes with detachable ramp for easy mount dismount. So many of these new ebike designs have weird frames that are difficult to mount on a bike rack. Taking two bikes on a car to a bike trailhead is such a common use-case, yet finding nice ebikes and compatible bike racks is getting more difficult it seems.

I see younger people with the budget to buy at the $2,000 to $2,500 range. What they seem to be interested in are higher power and range into class 3 and above with pedals. In order for companies to draw in more of the thrill "seeker crowd", a big group, companies need to have a couple models in the 40 mph range. More power and range with the ability to dial it back for casual rides and get in to traffic speeds where it is needed. Higher speeds and bigger batteries seem to be a huge market share that will never go away.

Hmmm, here in Germany we have some brands that sell affordable bikes with high specs. What you don’t see that often are those cheap spect bikes with Tourneys etc. But this whole fatbike thing is growing, too. Was there a big new thing in the last years? Maybe the torque sensor in the US. In Europe there was nothing, as our bikes mostly have torque sensors because of the middrives. Your prediction with car brands wasn’t that far off. But it happens more outside the US. Here in the EU, more and more car industry suppliers are stepping into the game. Not with complete bikes, but with components.

The big problem is the Alu frame, people see it as fragile, and in my experience it is, so if the frame has no suspension, as with the VanMoof, that is a deal breaker. Then the fear of burning your flat/house down when the batteries explode because you have charged them too long. Then the cost, heavy rain ability, low legal speeds in the UK, and high cost of replacement batteries, lack of new battery technology, and basic lack of need; many just don't see them as long term investments due to the Alu frames and high cost, and theft threat.

I think there may be a trend to standardize ebike motors and batteries at 48v, since Tesla is already pushing 48v for electric vehicles. German car manufacturers Audi, BMW, Daimler Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen already support a 48V system to phase out the standard 12V automotive system. Hyundai and Ford are also coming on board. Having 48v charging stations would benefit ebike riders as much as newer ICE, hybrid and fully electric cars.

I Apparently have a taste for cheap ebikes. I like the bikes with the silverfish battery slotted being the seatpost. I suppose because I don't trust being able to order the right size integrated battery should a model or company be discontinued. I wish (some) cheap companies would change their business model so we can order the bike separate from a easy to order, certified battery. That way people can buy the battery worth the amount of range they need. The Jetson Bolt Pro would be my example bike. So many people buy that only to modify it immediately. What happens to the unused original battery?

On regulation i expect and hope they continue with the push to UL or ETL certification. these stories always pop up of fires from ebikes and ascooter, when you look into them it is usually a cheap charger or low end bike battery lacking a bms, or allowing charging when the bms fails. My work bans any ebikees in the bike racks without approval of the bike. Luckily my Aventon Level was UL listed so it is allowed.

I bought a diamondback union 2 and have used it exclusively to commute since last fall here in central oregon. ZERO tax rebates/incentives, the State of Oregon actually charged me $25 for the sale of the bike while EVS get several thousand dollars back, not cool!

I have asbestosis and interstitial lung disease. My ebike broke down and UPS lost it for months so I have to ride a mechanical bike and truthfully ( 200 miles easily) it was hell.

Health related vision problems forced me out of the workforce and being able to drive i live in a area surrounded by hills and riding a standard bike isn't realistic. an Ebike would help me regain some independence. Being on disability it's just not feasible to purchase one. Thanks for the opportunity.

Shouldn't go higher than 60v for general safety. At least that's my understanding, on cars anything above 60v is given high voltage wrap

I think your predictions are pretty good, and I hope the crackdowns don't arrive this year! I think that a bit more power and speed can be a safety benefit when riding in traffic, but we have to remember that limits were put in place to make e-bikes compatible with shared infrastructure. Despite being modded for hill climbing and towing other bikes, my own bike still has a default mode of 20mph/750 watts, which I always use in public parks and other such space. I think some people don't bother with the "expensive" bikes because there's not much reason beyond longevity. I've ridden with thousands of other bikes in group rides, and personally, I'm disappointed in the performance and features when I ride them. A $2,900 bike that has to be pushed up hills and has no functioning brake light or even cutoff switches? I'll pass 😉

There is a lot of lower income people need a enclosed E bike that can be mobile to be able to get back and forth to work. Cars are around $17,000 and up. So a lot of people need something to get around. E bikes are limited to Summer use. And bus lines are not available for most people.

I really want to see power tool companies produce ebikes. I find it crazy, that Bosch makes the motors for so many of these ebikes, but they haven't made an ebike themselves. Producing an ebike that uses their power-tool batteries would be a really smart move, especially to get consumers into their higher voltage battery markets, which are generally only for large power tools and lawnmowers.
