You are a wonderful teacher. I'm 84. When a negative thought hits...I stop and compel myself to do 10 mental "pushups" to offset the thought. Example: name 10 of your favorite songs, name 10 countries you've visited,name 10 friends you had in grade school. And by the time I hit ten...I've forgotten the poison thought. Realizing that I am not my thoughts - that I don't need to listen to them, to act on them, that I can simply observe them - is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. Previously, I allowed my mind to keep me miserable, worried, angry - every single day. After practicing Eckhart's teachings I now only feel that way sometimes, and even then, I have a way out. I now realize that I create my own suffering. And that I can stop doing this any time I choose. I can accept this very moment as it is. Dwelling on the past leads to so much regret and resentment. Thinking about future leads to so much fear, worry and anxiety. When I live in the Now, everything is OK. And Now IS everything.

@@ElenaRata-iv5pk I have found that whenever obsessive thinking arises, it is important for me to switch to the perspective of the watcher. That way, I can simply observe the thoughts and they don't have to affect me. This is hard, of course, but the alternative is a great deal of suffering, as I am sure you know. Also, I think it is essential to develop this ability when things are good. That way, when things are difficult, I am better equipped to resist the tempation to participate in or buy into my obesssive thinking.

I too am an overthinker due to a cruel childhood. Mine only strikes when I have a disagreement with my partner if she pushes me away for her own space, rejection. I keep myself busy and I'm building in my hobbies and getting out in nature and finding my own place in this world at 54. Every time I hear that voice I tell it to shut up, I visualise it and I get a spade fill it with soil and bury it, I muffle it and find something positive to do with my time, walking my dog, the gym or simply creating something with my hands. But seeing that voice as a foreign invader and burying it, focusing on the earth I bury it with and listen to the muffled sounds as the voice becomes choked and eventually buried until I can no longer hear it, then I smile and go about my day. Dear friend, I have very strong feelings and memories about my childhoods perception, at that time I was true natural. And I remember how it was terrible, when a thinking mind of adults took away the naturalness of my being, as their thoughts and behavior shackled me in chains. It works because it's distraction. It isn't healthy in the long run, though. You're choosing to focus on something that is more pleasant than your negative thoughts, and since the conscious mind more or less runs on a single thread, you're feeling fine for the time being. However, suppressed or repressed thoughts have a way of integrating into your subconscious, where they become much more permanent and difficult to deal with. Healthy distraction in small portions is fine as symptomatic treatment. That is what single-pointed meditation is: a conscious choice to dedicate all your attention to a single point of interest - your breath, your fingertips, your sensations - so that it rids your conscious mind of the capacity to focus on anything else, including the negative thoughts. Contrast that with analytical meditation, which is a holistic mindfulness of the here and now, offering an opportunity to treat the real problem. The Dalai Lama talks about the difference between these two forms of meditation.

@regulareverydayhalfbirdguy2 жыл бұрын
@@robertandrews3055 We cannot be without thoughts. After all, it is the function of our minds to think, always. The aim of mindfulness is neither to replace certain thoughts with others, nor to let go of thinking altogether. To the contrary. It is to welcome and observe all that arises in consciousness, be it thought, emotion, or sensation, whether positive or negative - without trying to change it. Then we can simply be - not without, but _with_ all that is here - resisting nothing at all.

It was just when I started having physicial pain and got diagnosed that I realized I had to slow down my mind, process my traumas and stop being so negative in my mind (I NEVER considered myself a negative person before, but the truth is that I always jad catastrophic thoughts on my mind). I realized about my negative mind chatter just now, when I am at my lowest. I am just hoping that the physical pain goes away little by little with this new awakening. Thanks Eckart

It changed my awareness to realize that I am different from the useless trash and repetitive thoughts that run through my mind. It changed my spiritual life completely, I became a believer. It helps me to believe that I can overcome my mind and find presence. It’s hard but I just think of my mind as the ego and enemy. If I can not take it seriously and try and just be the observer and not go a long with the ego and nonsense of the mind.

I started listening to Tolle a few years ago; I enjoy his work. I moved to Thailand, where the people are predominantly Buddhist. I love it here. I live in an older condo in Pattaya (a 5-minute scooter ride to the beach). It is all concrete, so the rooms are quiet (I have a video of the condo). I am on the ninth floor, so the sunsets are great, and I do not have much trouble with mosquitoes or road noise. We have a large pool with a slide. There is a restaurant by the pool; most meals are 3-7 dollars. My rent is $207/month. I have a new wall unit A/C, that I run 24/7 and my electric bill is $30/month. My room is 270 square feet or 30 square meters. It has plenty of room for a single guy. I have no plans to move back to the States.

I just started trying transcendental meditation, it's helping a lot. I'm a serious over-thinker. I just researched it, made up a 3 syllable simple word that has no meaning, and started for 20 minutes right when I wake in the morning. I sit comfortably in bed, breath in without thinking about how I'm doing it, very quietly say the word slowly as I release the air. It works! I can go longer than 20 minutes now, with no thought, and it's wonderful! I'm about to start doing it in the evenings as well. It's really calming, I need that!

The reason that it is easier to focus on negativity isn't because we are predisposed, precisely, inasmuch as the brain and ego is combing thru the details to figure out how to avoid the direct and associated pain of what happened. And because we have primal, generational patterns that are traumatic, we stay in victim/survival spiral. The brain recognizes patterns. When we change the "algorithm" of our lives, we change our 'vibration' and align ultimately with the vibration we prefer. It's challenging tho! And consciousness is very key to stop that primal brain cycle of fight/flight (victim/survival mode) and change the patterns. Thank you for your perspective on this, Eckart. I am grateful for you.

I also talk to my self in the We form. An example is "we got this!" or "what should we do today?". Lately I've been going through a stressful period in my life, changing jogs. With elevated stress a lot of normal bodily functions tend to get messed up, I noticed that I went into a negative self talk cycle, that eventually led to a nervous breakdown. Slowly climbing back out of the darkness I realised that I was talking to myself negatively, imagining doom scenarios as if they were fact. So, to combat these thoughts, any time i catch myself with negative self talk, i just say, in my head, hey, that's negative self talk. and i follow it up with. "We got this man" and an example of some hard times in the passed that i had to overcome. I think this should get much more attention, because its a total game changer for life.

I use a tactic, with especially negative thoughts. 1) if i had the thought before I am allowed to stop rethinking the same thought. That already has been processed.
