This reminds me of the time I worked for Ford when the ecoboost engines were just being introduced fleet wide 2010-2013. We had dumpsters out back full of blown turbos, cracked cylinder heads and cracked engine blocks that all had to go back to Ford so the engineers could figure out what was going wrong. Everyone in the shop was tearing these things apart on a daily basis, even the lube jockeys were pulling turbos off because we had so much work.

That’s what worries me about Ford. They have a history of major problems that they ignore for months and then years. Ford tends to hang the customer out to dry. I’m waiting for the ‘23 Duramax - less issues.

I had the 1.5 4 cylinder in my 2020 Fusion SE. They claimed for 2020 that they had fixed the issue. The whole time I owned the car, it slowly consumed coolant. I brought it in multiple times, they would refill it and say there was nothing wrong. It was also an extremely noisy engine, I never really understood why it was so clattery. I bought it new for 15k at the beginning of the pandemic, I sold it 2 months ago with 20k miles for 6 grand more than I paid. I was shocked that they paid me so much, but I guess used cars are going for a lot due to the chip shortage. I ended up buying a 2009 Lexus RX350 with 70k miles. I've seen them goodwill older vehicles with much higher milage. Extended warranty definitely covers it. If you want a good laugh, this is right out of the bulletin. "• 1.5L EcoBoost engine • At least one of the following conditions: - Low coolant level - White exhaust smoke - Runs rough condition with or without an illuminated MIL with only DTCs P0300, P0301- P0304, P0316, P0217, P1285 and/or P1299 stored in PCM" If you've ever worked for a dealership, before something big like a motor gets approved, they put you through hell with hours of testing. If you read the above, this is the diag procedure. Is it a 1.5? yes, Is the coolant level low? yes. Put a motor in it. That's it, the diag is done. That's why I say they will probably goodwill it. Ford knows they really messed these things up. You don't want it anyway. You'll never make money on it. It takes about 5 or so before you can get them done and make money.

The 1.5 EcoBoost of this generation (for example, used in the Escape (US)/Kuga (EU)) have a manufacturing issue where over the lifespan of the engine it can happen, that coolant will enter chambers 2/3. I was recently in the market for a Kuga MK2 facelift as well and that's the sole reason i stayed away from the EcoBoost engine. Only 1.5 EB blocks built after April 2019 come with the fix.

I work for an OEM and the number of recalls on new models, especially ones with new powertrain designs, would blow your mind. Every engineering cell has one team member dedicated to documenting everything for the legal department AND a member that sits on the quality/recall committee for handling communications between engineering and logistics/marketing/production/etc. And yes, there are people like Ed Norton's Fight Club character that can be brought on board if the need arises. Believe it or not, 99% of the people I work with want what's best for the customer. We weigh risks with availability of parts and push for the best overall solution. Sadly, vehicles are SO complex these days that engineers have a hard time fixing problems without causing more somewhere else. The Time/Cost/Quality choice is very real. That's a long way of saying it sucks for this customer but they may get lucky and the brand takes it back under warranty for research. It's a slim chance though considering the age of the vehicle. They probably already have a solution or are working on it.

Two ways to test the block: pull spark plugs, drain coolant, smoke test insert at coolant cap, watch what cylinder smoke emits from. True does not eliminate gasket. Other way is to simply reverse smoke test by inserting each plug hole and watching cooling opening for same result while rolling over engine by hand.

This doesn't surprise me. My mom had an issue with her 2014 Fusion where the power steering decided to turn on its own randomly. Very dangerous, would've sent me flying through someone's yard at 60mph if I had lost braking power too. Ford is the only manufacturer I know of where contacting corporate only makes things worse. It being an intermittent issue, I kept telling them to let her have a loaner and let the mechanics drive it for a week to see how dangerous they think it is. And the Ford rep shut that idea down faster than the dealer. We had to wait until the attention died down from Ford corporate before we could talk the dealer into doing the loaner deal. Sure enough, within a week or two they found several problems. Including a handful of chaffed wires including ones in the EPAS circuit, and also found that the remote start module was spamming the same CAN bus the power steering sensors were on too, so that was replaced as part of the fix. 2 years of that problem and it was finally resolved. Even though it was a 2.5l NA, which is actually kind of solid, it lasted until this past July, until it started having other issues again so instead of opening the can of worms that we know the car can be, my mom decided to trade it for a vehicle made by another brand.

And as it turned out it was a good choice, a little over a year later I got laid off and took the car on an epic road trip (Route 66), and now my daily commute is about 100 miles, so the 26 MPG I get is much easier to live with than what a V8 would get, plus that V6 automatic combo is about the most bulletproof drivetrain Ford makes, so it worked out well.

So my grandma had a 2018 ford escape and it had the same issue the 2018-2019 1.5L ecoboost engines were on recall for this problem she had to get a new engine for her car to fix the problem and it also had a headgasket leak so there's the fix new engine like you said

I knew it had a serious problem when I saw bubbles in the coolant.

Love yhe videos bro there's a tsb for a short block for the 1.5l it's still covered under power trian Ford will cover it for the customer lol keep up the good work
@joeevans78662 жыл бұрын
If im not mistaken they had a recall for short blocks for coolant intrusion. Do to headgaskets and auto start stop functions. Replaced one a couple years ago.
@CheeseMeme9852 жыл бұрын
The 1.5l ecoboost are notorious for having over heating issues. Like cracked heads or bad head gaskets.
@williamwchuang2 жыл бұрын
It's actually a defective block design. They left a notch between two cylinders that lets coolant leak through.
@paulgaerisch2 жыл бұрын
I sure hope Ford honestly does the right thing. No engine should be having that kind of problem so soon. That’s why I will never get an engine with forced induction. I like Ford but, not their ecoboost engines. Good job Ray.

I bought a brand new Ford Ranger in 2001 (first brand new vehicle) and at 100,900 miles (ten year 100K powertrain warrantee) found a needle on the transmission pan magnet. Brought it back to the dealer and they told me it was out of warrantee and wouldn't cover it. I told them I would never buy another Ford. It was a good truck, had it for 230K miles but I drive a Tundra now.

Your choice is going to be limited. Most new suv's are now turbocharged. Maybe wait for an electric car?

i have had a few subarus with bad headgasket and it would push the water out into the overflowbottle so id take radiator cap off it and put a sock in the hole to help keep the sloshing down and let the gases out without loosing the coolant it worked for about 7 months til the gasket completely went. honest this worked!

I have a question for a learning experience for me here as someone with VERY basic knowledge. Ray did not remove the dipstick to check for coolant in the oil. Would that not be faster than performing the Hydrocarbon test, considering how much coolant it was looking like they were going through? If it was all being combusted and not reaching the oil, wouldn't it be throwing out tons of white smoke? Or are new engines not designed in a way that those are symptoms anymore?
@EpicMel0ns2 жыл бұрын
Curious about this too, I think it’s cause the engine isn’t very old, but I would think you would see some smoke and/or discoloration in the oil
@PimpMyPc892 жыл бұрын
You're not guaranteed to see coolant in oil when the head gasket fails. It's just a possible symptom of a failed head gasket. Same with the white exhaust smoke, it can be a symptom but you're not guaranteed to see it because it depends on how/where the gasket fails.

Sometimes head gasket failures involve a failure between the coolant galleries and the combustion area, so the coolant doesnt always mix with the oil, you should be able to smell the coolant being burnt by smelling the exhaust pipe, has a very distinctive smell.....

I saw the issue at 1:13, the oil fill cap was on backwards!

yes with that on backwards the oil acts as retardant, gumming things up!

Had a Lincoln with a 2.0 ecoboost. Started to see it use coolant at around 56,000 miles. Bought a Toyota. Gave Ford a chance. Wonderful Lincoln mkc. Quiet, wonderful features, comfortable. Beautiful fit and finish. Too bad it had that engine.

This is why I bought a 2017 Camry, 2.5L naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. Gas mileage is good enough for something without a small turbo engine that’s likely to blow up a lot sooner than a naturally aspirated engine.

I'm a Lincoln tech. Believe it or not, the 2.0 is the good one. Its still a piece of crap, its just that some of them don't blow up. You made the right move. The C is nice, but its nothing more than an Escape with a nice trim package. The engineering isn't that good. You had to notice the torque steer. It practically makes a right turn when you give it some gas.
