This reminds me of the time I worked for Ford when the ecoboost engines were just being introduced fleet wide 2010-2013. We had dumpsters out back full of blown turbos, cracked cylinder heads and cracked engine blocks that all had to go back to Ford so the engineers could figure out what was going wrong. Everyone in the shop was tearing these things apart on a daily basis, even the lube jockeys were pulling turbos off because we had so much work.

That’s what worries me about Ford. They have a history of major problems that they ignore for months and then years. I was looking at an F250 power stroke for a while but remained on sideline after reading about current trans failures, rear axle tube cracks and some engine problems. Ford tends to hang the customer out to dry. I’m waiting for the ‘23 Duramax - less issues.

I had the 1.5 4 cylinder in my 2020 Fusion SE. They claimed for 2020 that they had fixed the issue. The whole time I owned the car, it slowly consumed coolant. I brought it in multiple times, they would refill it and say there was nothing wrong. It was also an extremely noisy engine, I never really understood why it was so clattery. I bought it new for 15k at the beginning of the pandemic, I sold it 2 months ago with 20k miles for 6 grand more than I paid. I was shocked that they paid me so much, but I guess used cars are going for a lot due to the chip shortage. I ended up buying a 2009 Lexus RX350 with 70k miles. It's older, but the quality and reliability differences are vast. I'm beyond thankful that I was able to get out of that car by the grace of God.

I literally do these every day. The bulletin you need to look at is 20-2100. The fix is a short block. And that's to start. Sometimes you also need a head. The customer needs to try Ford first. I've seen them goodwill older vehicles with much higher milage. Extended warranty definitely covers it. If you want a good laugh, this is right out of the bulletin. "• 1.5L EcoBoost engine • At least one of the following conditions: - Low coolant level - White exhaust smoke - Runs rough condition with or without an illuminated MIL with only DTCs P0300, P0301- P0304, P0316, P0217, P1285 and/or P1299 stored in PCM" If you've ever worked for a dealership, before something big like a motor gets approved, they put you through hell with hours of testing. If you read the above, this is the diag procedure. Is it a 1.5? yes, Is the coolant level low? yes. Put a motor in it. That's it, the diag is done. That's why I say they will probably goodwill it. Ford knows they really messed these things up. You don't want it anyway. You'll never make money on it. It takes about 5 or so before you can get them done and make money.

I work for an OEM and the number of recalls on new models, especially ones with new powertrain designs, would blow your mind. Every engineering cell has one team member dedicated to documenting everything for the legal department AND a member that sits on the quality/recall committee for handling communications between engineering and logistics/marketing/production/etc. And yes, there are people like Ed Norton's Fight Club character that can be brought on board if the need arises. Believe it or not, 99% of the people I work with want what's best for the customer. We weigh risks with availability of parts and push for the best overall solution. Sadly, vehicles are SO complex these days that engineers have a hard time fixing problems without causing more somewhere else. The Time/Cost/Quality choice is very real. That's a long way of saying it sucks for this customer but they may get lucky and the brand takes it back under warranty for research. It's a slim chance though considering the age of the vehicle. They probably already have a solution or are working on it.

Two ways to test the block: pull spark plugs, drain coolant, smoke test insert at coolant cap, watch what cylinder smoke emits from. True does not eliminate gasket. Other way is to simply reverse smoke test by inserting each plug hole and watching cooling opening for same result while rolling over engine by hand.

I had this exact problem with my 2012 Dodge Journey R/T 3.6 pentastar. It had to go to 3 different Dodge dealerships in Las Vegas/Henderson to figure out the problem. It constantly overheated and was drinking coolant like an Irishmen drinks whiskey. Finally after replacing the entire cooling system and it still having the issue the dealership tore the engine apart and found two cracked cylinder heads and the gasket had failed. Thank god I bought the extended full coverage warranty when I purchased the vehicle. Out of pocket cost to me was $500 for warranty.

I purchased a CPO 2017 Elantra Sport with 24.5K miles. It transferred over the remaining 10/100k PT and 5/60K basic but I also paid to extend the basic out to 10/100 match as well. Not having to worry about things breaking for another 5 years is wonderful.

Funniest to me is I found this kit in the back of a cabinet in the shop I was working in, ran the test, and showed it to the "lead mechanic" and he goes "the hell is that?" Supposedly ASE certified shop. Moved to an actual diesel shop after that and the difference was stark and refreshing.

Hello Ray, First time viewer and very happy with this video so far. I'm 3 minutes in and you've already correctly diagnosed the issue. Unfortunately this is a defect in the head castings on the 1.5l ecoboosts and Ford definitely knows about it. I went through the same thing with my 2017 Fusion and literally had to threaten to sue Ford before they agreed to warranty my engine. That was at 42k miles (Ford power train warranty goes to 60k) There is currently a class action lawsuit that has been filed as well.

This doesn't surprise me. My mom had an issue with her 2014 Fusion where the power steering decided to turn on its own randomly. Very dangerous, would've sent me flying through someone's yard at 60mph if I had lost braking power too. Ford is the only manufacturer I know of where contacting corporate only makes things worse. It being an intermittent issue, I kept telling them to let her have a loaner and let the mechanics drive it for a week to see how dangerous they think it is. And the Ford rep shut that idea down faster than the dealer. We had to wait until the attention died down from Ford corporate before we could talk the dealer into doing the loaner deal. Sure enough, within a week or two they found several problems. Including a handful of chaffed wires including ones in the EPAS circuit, and also found that the remote start module was spamming the same CAN bus the power steering sensors were on too, so that was replaced as part of the fix. 2 years of that problem and it was finally resolved. Even though it was a 2.5l NA, which is actually kind of solid, it lasted until this past July, until it started having other issues again so instead of opening the can of worms that we know the car can be, my mom decided to trade it for a vehicle made by another brand.

Bought a used 2016 or 2017 fusion From carmax. Had the same issue. Took it back the day after purchase left on their lot and told them wasn’t my problem. My dad had actually noticed it. I had purchased their warranty as well. I exchanged it for a 2012 lexus is350 awd that had to be shipped from a couple states over. 113,000 at purchase and now at 137,000 still no issues and a warranty until 150,000. Very glad I settled for an older lexus vs a newer cheaply made ford with slightly better tech. Also grateful that carmax allows exchanges within so many days

Sucker bought a ford product. More money than brains. A population of rich people with low iqs. Hey buy enough fords and they be sure to unload that wealth 1 shit box at a time. They say toyota out dated technology. Why change a good reliable vehicle? If new is junk then why not stick with what works best? Oh ya the big 3 want wealth and by selling junk you forced to buy more. More sold more profits. A car that lasts 30 yrs sure would cut out massive profits. Less trash in landfills, less pollution and happier customers. Nobody wants that, we all wanna produce massive pollution because massive pollution creates wealth. All those plastic parts pile up fast when a car only lasts 5 yrs.

It’s good to see that you did your due diligence. I know mechanics that work on everything all the time aren’t always sure of specific issues that affect specific models, but I think any ford tech knew exactly that the problem was once they saw the title. There are so many of these 1.5’s going bad. Ford is giving 1 free replacement for them up to 80,000 I think. If you see a 17-19 Escape with 1.5 or 2.0, a 15-early 19 edge with 2.0, 17-20 fusion with 1.5 or 2.0 and you’re seeing misfires on 2-3 and low coolant, it’s time for a new long block. Anyone out there, DO NOT buy these car’s used unless this issue is specifically addressed.

When I was shopping for a Mustang a few years ago I had a choice between an Ecoboost, a V6 or a GT. While I would have liked a GT the extra $200 or so a month (plus more gas and the almost inevitable speeding tickets) ruled that out, and I REALLY didn't want a 4 banger Mustang and didn't trust the EcoBoost over the long term. I got a V6 convertible and it's been a great car... not quite as good as my 96 Jeep XJ, but a great car... and no turbo!

Good choice on the six twanger, why pay high priced insurance for a rustang and only have a four banger....bet you wish you had a eight cylinder though, I had one in my 83 rustang , first year of the 5 speed I believe, could pass everything but a gas station, pulled over on my way home from the dealer, cop was OK though , let me off and told me to slow down with wife and two kids, insurance was more than my car payment...
@JeffDeWitt
@JeffDeWitt 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameslaw3740 Yes, I really would rather have had a V8. My second choice would have been a nicely optioned V6 with a stick. As it is my car, a V6 automatic convertible showed up on a dealers lot with only 12k miles on it and about 12k cheaper than a new one, so I bit. And as it turned out it was a good choice, a little over a year later I got laid off and took the car on an epic road trip (Route 66), and now my daily commute is about 100 miles, so the 26 MPG I get is much easier to live with than what a V8 would get, plus that V6 automatic combo is about the most bulletproof drivetrain Ford makes, so it worked out well.

I have a question for a learning experience for me here as someone with VERY basic knowledge. Ray did not remove the dipstick to check for coolant in the oil. Would that not be faster than performing the Hydrocarbon test, considering how much coolant it was looking like they were going through? If it was all being combusted and not reaching the oil, wouldn't it be throwing out tons of white smoke? Or are new engines not designed in a way that those are symptoms anymore?
@EpicMel0ns

Curious about this too, I think it’s cause the engine isn’t very old, but I would think you would see some smoke and/or discoloration in the oil
@PimpMyPc89

You're not guaranteed to see coolant in oil when the head gasket fails. It's just a possible symptom of a failed head gasket. Same with the white exhaust smoke, it can be a symptom but you're not guaranteed to see it because it depends on how/where the gasket fails.

I'm a Lincoln tech. Believe it or not, the 2.0 is the good one. Its still a piece of crap, its just that some of them don't blow up. You made the right move. The C is nice, but its nothing more than an Escape with a nice trim package. The engineering isn't that good. You had to notice the torque steer. It practically makes a right turn when you give it some gas.
