I got the Canadian Solar 405w panels as well. I have 2 series of 4 panels about 1600w each so 3200w input for me, and the Power kit can accept 3 strings for a total of 4800w Solar input! So 12 of these panels can be used. Not bad. Just keep in mind 150v max per input. I had the setup for 1 year and no issues in hardware just a few crappy firmware issues that scared me but all was good soon after the new update came thru. Ecoflow support is ok as they answered all my e-mails.

The roof mounting system: is there no need for the lags to bite into the joists/2x4?

Correct! No need for it , you can go right into the sheathing but spacing between each can vary on code. In Ontario, we require every 2ft on OSB and 4ft into joists.
