In the 1970's I picked up a Canadian hitchhiker in South Africa. That person had already hitchhiked through the Americas, north and south, Europe and Africa. He literally had a pullover, a spare set of jeans and T-shirt, socks and underclothes. He also had a tie and an ironed white shirt that he changed into whenever he was stuck in a place for hours without a lift. He only hitchhiked except that to cross oceans he crewed on yachts. If a day went by that someone did not offer him a bed for the night, he carried on hitchhiking.

Before phones n charger i traveled an entire summer with just a light jacket and a wristwatch. An I hitchhiked around the country. I was 16 best summer of my life.

I think one of the most versatile items I would take is a handkerchief. 18 inch by 18 inch. It is the most versatile item I can think of. Washcloth, towel, Kleenex, sweat rag, you can wet it down to cool you off. It can be tied to make a bag, used as a placemat for food, and on and on. The material washes easy and is thin so it dries quickly. It can be used to tie your hair up, as a napkin to protect your clothes, or as accessory to your outfit. You can, clean your glasses, wipe up spills, use it as a coaster, tie it up to carry small collected items and probably many other uses. It folds up small and has many uses.

I always have a handkerchief or bandana on me somewhere for the same list of reasons. It's my version of Douglas Adams' "know where your towel is" theory. Very useful when traveling.

Dry wet underwear on wood, not à great idea, stains the wood. In Phone, even with cover, moisture might develop and damage.

When I lived in Mozambique, I learned it was common to own only a few pieces of underwear, and everyone just washed their underwear at night. I started doing the same thing and loved it. No dirty underwear on the floor, ever!

I genuinly thought this concept was bullshit, but having watched your video i'm wrong, your right. I/we have all been brainwashed into filling a 10kg/20kg suitcase crammed with STUFF. I've always travelled mimimal but this is another level. Gonna try this, believe it will be liberating, thank you!

I started traveling to London a few years ago (I live in the UK) with just a handbag. I started traveling to Europe with the same handbag. I just have toothbrush, paste, floss, change underwear, piece of shampoo soap 2 in 1, comb, mini deodorant, multi purpose balm, microfiber cloth to dry myself and zip lock to keep it in, super thin flip-flops and zip lock for them (pedicure flip-flops), phone, charger, passport, wallet and tiny first aid kit supplies. I wear a warm waterproof coat, tershirt, underwear, trousers, shoes, empty water bottle. It's not much but it works well, even in a hostel.

After showering, keep your towel drier by wiping your body off with your hands before you dry yourself. The towel is drier for using on your clothes. When you've washed your clothes in the sink and wrung them out, roll them up in the towel you've already used and then stand on the towel for a minute. Unroll the towel and shake your clothes out; they will dry much faster.

I discovered that a hand towel will dry me, if I’m vigorous in rubbing. My hair is another story, as it’s thigh length these days. But hand towel, squeezing hair and pinning it up, does allow a larger towel to dry my clothes.

This really inspired me. It reminded me of when I was trekking into DC on weekends to visit someone I dated a few years ago. I took a medium/small handbag with a chromebook, some thin tops, some underwear, and a few toiletries that all fit in a small pencil case. Rewore the same pants and kept my wallet and phone in my pocket. It was so nice being able to get on the metro and not look like a tourist - like you said, very freeing!

I always take a cotton scarf that can do multiple things: towel in a pinch, dress up an outfit, wear over swimwear, block out the sun/rain, lie down on a beach, a shawl in the evening or on transport. Have even used it as an emergency dog leash 😊 It features heavily in my photos over the years ha ha

Back in the 90s, I used to work w/ a woman in marketing promotion and on one or two night trips, she would only travel with a large handbag which contained her work files, a second microfiber dress, her phone, a book, planner and sometimes a small computer. It seemed so freeing to travel that way.

When I go visit my parents in the weekend by train I just take a little backpack with underware, socks, a shirt, toothbrush, a bottle of water, a book. There is no problem to wear the same clothes for two days and I know that there I can find toiletries. What is really necessary for me are floss and lip balm.

Doing this to build courage. I went to a place I knew no one, did not speak the language, and only carried a little rolling school bag with a feather pillow in it. I did not want to appear strange having no bag. I had a coin purse with a little cash and my ATM card, minimal funds and no credit. No phone, no toothbrush. After I got a low rent place for a month, I bought a toothbrush and comb. There were thrift stores for clothes. It was stressful at times, but mostly great fun.

This is a fascinating idea, but I'd probably feel quite challenged to even limit myself to a backpack! For overnight travel of 1-4 days I always need at least: my sunglasses, reading glasses, tiny strip of thyroid tablets, tissues, lip balm, moisturiser, sensitive body/ face wash, a sliver of a shampoo bar, toothbrush and paste, mints, water, small notebook and pen, phone, charger, earbuds, underwear, small hair brush, spare outfit for lighter or cooler layers, sleepwear (I get very cold even in Summer), hat, reusable shopping bag ... it's a lot! Also some snacks as I have a lot of food allergies and can't always buy suitable options. I take more to the library than you took for your trip!! 🤣

​@@tarot-karma-online she does though ? Her list is actually very comprehensive, yet paired down. When you have sensitive skin, you can't just go with any product (I tried without and it was an epic fail). I actually go for a moisturizer that has sunscreen in it, just like I pick a colored lip balm, so you can use as a blush on the cheeks. Same with hair, a brush and your usual shampoo is best (again, I did try without, too). Of course you can do without, but then don't complain that your skin and hair age you prematurely... It's really basic grooming if you have some self esteem ;) I would only trade a thermos bottle instead of just "water". I would also add a pair of socks (they don't always dry down fast), and a scarf (either to dress up an outfit if needed, or as an extra layer for chilly nights or train). Nothing is worse than catching a cold and not enjoying your stay.

FINALLY someone doing a proper no bag travel! There are very few videos out there of people traveling this minimally, much less females. I think I will try this as a fun experiment, although I might bring a few more items than you did. I'm already pretty minimal taking one carry-on and a purse usually on the holidays.

Saved this video for reference because it's such a cool experiment! I usually travel with a small backpack and my bum bag (that is my everyday purse). If I were to attempt zero bags, I think I'd still bring my bum bag. It has my prescription sunglasses, chapstick, hand cream, nail file, glasses cleaner, handkerchief and reusable shopping bag that I carry with me and use all the time. I wouldn't want to be without any of those things, as I consider them all essentials. When traveling I also put my portable charger in it. Beyond that, I think I'd need to bring all the things you did, plus a hair styling cream(I have curly hair), a second pair of socks to switch out, and my facial sunscreen. I think all that would still fit comfortably in my bum bag and pockets. It would be a challenge, but totally doable. I'm sure I'd still be much more comfortable with a changes of clothes, some snacks, and my reusable water bottle. But, maybe I'll give this experiment a try!

I just spent 6 weeks backpacking across North America with only a 40L hiking backpack. I had some places to stay along the way and spent time mostly in cities. I had a few shirts, a few pants, a few underwear/socks, a laptop, a book, an external battery, earphones, and snacks. I ended up regretting bringing the laptop, and along the way I donated some clothes and replaced them with items I liked from thift stores. Everything went smoothly, and I'm about to head out to the midwest and then South America now with the same backpack. I definitely like carrying some type of bag with me even on 1-2 day trips because it allows me to carry water/snacks/book/earphones/charger and to be able to carry anything I need to along the way. Reminds me of the days when I was living 6 hrs away from my mother. When I finished my errands in the nearby city on a Friday I would go to the train station and take the first train that took me either home or to my mother. No luggage, but I always carry a backpack with me. Umbrella, water, Medication, headlamp, scarf, shoppingbag, paper, wallet, pocket knife, dental floss , needle, carabiner, tissues - everything small and lightweight so it fits in my little bag for the theater as well. Minimum clothes for any other even bigger trip is 2 shirt/underwear combos and leggins or a trouser. Drying overnight doesnt always work (rainy day, small, cold room) and sometimes you need more than one shirt a day (slipping into the lake 😊)

I often just pack a small backpack. Some customs officers can get REALLY suspicious if they think you have to little stuff. So I'd recommend to prepare your answers.

Luckily the customs thing won't be an issue on European train travel :) But I have also gotten suspicious customs agents when flying with a small backpack only (and then on top of that I smiled at them! Even more suspicious! 😅)

This reminds me of a mantra a school teacher told me around 40 years ago. When you leave for a trip you need “tickets, money, and passport”, everything else can be sorted out when we get there. Having said that I bring more than that to work each day. The joys of social care means I need a change of clothes (personal care - shit happens), swimming and outdoor gear (activities) as well as a tooth brush (I have to brush my teeth if I get spat on, it’s a me thing) and a coffee cup (‘cause caffeine). Having said that my work backpack is almost exactly what I have travelled for a month with.

I use a carry on bag or a back pack, but the one thing I always bring is an extra bag that packs down super small in case I end up accumulating things on my trip, want a small bag when going out or to a market or store (if we are planning on eating mostly at the rental), or I want extra space to stuff everything (rather than folding or rolling) when packing to leave .

I'd bring also a travel high-absorbent towel because sometimes it's good to wash the face, arms etc. while travelling when it's hot, or when you wait long time. Super light and small, and useful!

To me no luggage means not taking bags etc one doesn’t use in one’s daily life. Since I use a purse pretty much every time I leave the house I’d not consider that luggage. (And yes it means a regular purse, not buying something that looks like a purse but is *gigantic*) But this looked like a fun experiment. 😊

I have a mid-sized slouchy handbag I mainly use in winter (fits scarves, mittens, hats, water bottle etc) which doubles as a my travel bag for city breaks like this one. Definitely helps me pack light! Even when travelling for a couple of months I have taken carry on only for over a decade. You’re right, it’s a privilege to know you can buy things if you need to, especially if something needs replacing, but then travel itself is also a privilege. I am very bored at the sight of my clothes after 7 weeks of wearing the same things!

I traveled recently and thrifted while on vacation. It was domestic in the US so a little different but it did spark an idea on how to pack light. I had the ability to wash and dry, also. I can bring the clothes home or donate them back. I actually loved everything I bought this time but wore items during our trip.

Interesting, thank you. Had to fall back on something like this when the airline lost my luggage for 36 hours - last time I EVER checked a bag! The hotel provided a pack with a toothbrush/paste/razor so that was OK. Recommend the idea of rolling damp clothes in a towel (in a hotel ask for another towel) and twisting the moisture out. Also a cotton bandana is your friend - 60cms square is a good size, wear it knotted around your neck instead of carrying it in a pocket. Buffs are OK but can get a bit sweaty. Merino wool clothing (including underwear) is marvellous and can be worn on successive days without washing at a pinch. Back in June I did a 7 day trip through France and Spain but I took just one change of clothing (shirt, underwear, socks, sleep shorts) in a 13 litre lumberpack/satchel and had lots of room to spare. Wouldn't want to go more minimal than that!

I once moved back home across country. I mailed boxes to myself(what I could afford to). I boarded the plane with my 8 year old son and a handbag. I had just had major surgery and that was all I could manage. It was weird to my family but essential for me. Looking back, I was certainly none the worse for wear for doing it that way and I now think of myself from that time as courageous.

I actually love this idea and recently take less with me too. It’s beter to use what you already have or be creative. But for my special needs I actually always have to have a small backpack with me. But sometimes depending on where I go I just need a small bag. That’s when I pulled the trigger on the WAYKS sling bag that can be transformed into a small backpack when needed or a small sling when needed less space. I actually love it so much that I travel for a few days with it too. My dream would be to travel the world with just a small backpack.

I really hear you, I am so over luggage! I can travel with just a totebag now, but im about to test myself with an eight day trip. One of my favorite tricks is to mail back anything I've picked up in my travels and any extra stuff i dont need to carry on the trip home. That way i can travel home a little lighter, nice when i am tired from the trip.

I've been travelling around for nearly five years carrying a 7kg backpack. You just learn to make do because it's so much better than the hassle of carrying heavy bags. The freedom of arriving in a new town and not having to know which hotel you'll stay in and wanting to get a taxi straight there is worth all the sacrifice. You can take your time walking around and decide. Toiletries are the biggest issue because they tend to be expensive in many countries; they can be bulky and usually can't go in hand luggage. But like I said, you just learn to make do with less. I've also learned to exercise outside barefoot so I don't have to worry about sports shoes to get into a gym. That said, I suspect I would struggle in colder countries!

I am 100% a minimalist and also 100% an over-packer. I am going back home the beginning of November for 3 days. I am going to challenge myself to only use a very small back[ack that I have and see if I can do that. I know it is not long, and it is only 4 hours away and the weather is changing here in Pennsylvania, I still think it will be a challenge from what I am used to packing for a trip. This was fun to watch. I naturally pack very lightly because it doesn’t take much for me to feel unorganized. My diaper bag for 2 kids is the size of a small pocketbook. Don’t always have everything I need but 99 percent of the time I’m fine.

It’s been ages since I watched your videos. I’m sorry, I missed you! I’ve experimented with bringing very little on some trips but never nothing. I have to fly for about 14 hours + layovers, etc to get to my family so I need to bring a big crochet project to avoid going completely crazy. But when I traveled with very minimal clothes one trip it was totally fine. I once saw an Amish family at the airport with no carry on luggage, just full pockets, and it really intrigued me.

Loved this video. I like to hike long distances and came from Canada to do The 100 mile South Downs way in the UK with a 20 lbs backpack (including food and water). This was for a month, and I camped a lot of the way, plus I did 100kms of the Thames Path also with just this pack. I needed a tent and such but I’m so intrigued by this video. This is a fun thought experiment! I would have to take: phone and charger, glasses, sunglasses, sun hat (I'm Australian), water bottle, sorbolene cream, face powder, deodorant, and medication. I can be easily tired so I'd take the most minimal one week's worth of clothes and wash them in a laundromat. Gluten free snacks as a coeliac, always. Nice to haves that bring comfort: eye mask for sleeping, my own pillow case that smells of home, and bed socks. It sounds like a lot, but I bet I could travel a long time with all this in a day backpack, as long as I had access to a laundromat once a week!

I’m happy to come across this video & your channel. I tend to overpack, even with just carry on luggage. I hurt my back lifting my suitcase into the overhead bin recently. And of course did not use all I brought. No luggage travel may still mean hand luggage for me, but I’m toying with way less in future. Thanks for this food for thought.

I like your very real information and viewpoint (i.e. washing your underwear, actually visiting home and coming home with stuff!!! Haha). I’d go with wool and yes as some folks have mentioned you don’t need to wash as often. I like this idea and you’ve inspired me to try it! I don’t need much either! 😊

I appreciate your openness and honesty. I'm also a minimalist and prefer to ONLY bring a backpack with me when traveling (so far for trips 4-10 days). But I'm planning a trip to South America for 3 weeks and I wonder if a backpack would suffice. I was getting anxious that it wouldn't but after watching videos on how it IS possible by simply going to a laundromat or even using a sink to wash clothes, I feel much better. There's a certain freedom and joy with carrying everything you need on you using a simple backpack. Here's to experiences rather than things.

I think it is more easy in the winter then in the summer. Becouse in the winter I sweat much less. But I think I Will Always take a bag with me wich is not to big but big enough for a bottle of water and some food. We are going on our honeymoon for 10 days without a big suitcase and I am pretty proud of that 😊!

I feel inspired for when I go visit my parents this Christmas season. I think I'll use a small backpack and fill it half full. I know my sister will have more luggage, because she has neck problems and brings her pillow with her, but I'm pretty lucky health-wise and privilege-in-general wise.

Thank you for making this interesting video. Your content brings awareness of living with less stuff. It inspired me to bring a lot less to my own trip, but still too much. You where a bit hesitating because of not bringing food and water while traveling. What was your experience with that? Personally it feels better to bring water. I was once stuck in a train for quite a while and was happy that I bring something to drink with me 😊

lol I can't relate as an Eastern European. We literally have toothbrushes and pyjamas at relatives we visit like once a year. Visiting family doesn't count as travel for me, it's just going from home to home. So this was very interesting to watch to see how different the culture is.

I def know I can pack lighter than I do. I always need a reusable tote bag and menstrual products whenever I leave my house.

I don’t use shampoo (have’t for 10 years and my hair is so much healthier). Also take a collapsable water bottle and fill it whenever required. Wool socks can be worn for a week with the correct (leather / breathable) footware. Another useful item is a Buff (or equiv) for use as hair tie, face washer, scarf, beer bottle holder, etc. I love the idea of travelling with less. Thankyou for this video. I’m from Australia, so getting anywhere Europe / US takes a while (approx 22 hrs travel + connections), but I’m down to carry-on now for a 6 week trip. Having access to washer/dryer makes this easy.

It is easier if you’re wealthy enough to buy food on the go at expensive venues such as train stations and airports! I usually take food to eat of the go, but as it depletes my reusable carrier bag becomes lighter! When it’s empty I carefully fold it and stick it in a pocket ready for any souvenirs or purchases…

the lightest I can go is for 2-3 weeks on 25L backpack with small sling 3-7L plus I like to keep only my phone and maybe wallet (only when travelling) in my pockets, when going through security in airport it hassel to empty your pockets and you might forget something, I usually dumb all my stuff in sling before reach security

Your video has got me excitedly considering possibilities for short little unencumbered adventures in our state (as seniors we qualify for a free return train journey each year). I'm not sure if my husband will agree to try it though.Our last trip interstate we carried a total of 7kg and we will be doing the same for a 2 week international trip. I would really love to have no bag like you. I would need a hairbrush/comb, a water bottle and medication. My husband would also need a razor as he likes to be clean shaven. Many years ago I went on a 3-week trip to Russia with my u3a and had to share a room with an older woman. She used to take off her one pair of thick cotton waist-high underpants each night to wash and hung them in the bathroom to dry. The weather was quite cold and they didn't always dry but she put them on anyway and told me her body heat dried them off. A step too far for me. My underwear is lightweight and dries quickly.

A towel is just about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can carry. Partly because it has great practical value. Funny about the shampoo. That is the one thing I don’t bring when I travel, just use whatever is at the hotel etc. I am not a minimal packer but can do 3 weeks in a carryon.

Just found you and I love this. I’m not that extreme, but I try to always be careful to not overpack. Got back from a week long trip yesterday and was shocked to actually inventory used versus not used clothing. I think aside from underwear, I had more untouched things than used. While traveling it’s always stressful to feel like everything is heavy, or that I’m going to misplace something, so I love trying to pack lighter. I’m going out next week and I am definitely going to try to challenge myself more. 🌻

Cool. I wore the same pants for 2 months to germany korea and about 8 cities in germany. The last month i didnt wash them at all and they were still good as new. My important items are 2 pairs wool socks and 2 pairs underwear 1 or 2 undershirts and 1 or 2 long sleeve shirts (to switch it up). The clothes im wearing are obviously not packed. Wool socks dont smell if you wear them 2 or 3 days in a row. Also a drain plug mat thing to plug a hotel sink! Wash socks underwear and undersirt in sink since small enough. I didnt need to wash pants or overshirts unless needed to or had option for a washer and dryer for free but i didnt need to was overshirts for the same month i didnt wash pants. I realized I dont need to pack any pants the ones wearing last plenty fine. Also. Ballcap, scarf and jacket depending. Buy most hygiene stuff at location incding sunscreen. Of course laptop phone and chargers wires etc. holafly esim bought through phone at location activated through email on laptop gets wifi and a local number. Swim shorts. I would consider a small pan or camping pot induction compatible to use in hostel kitchens since many are not well equiped. Can fill it with some of the clothing items. I think with this list everything is covered for a 3 month trip, but its starting to sound like a lot now. Could skip the pan but with a hostel kitchen it would be good to cook a warm meal now and then. 😂most hostels with guest kitchen have pans.

I think its awesome you packing for travel is simply packing you coat pockets! Thats AWESOME! For a 1 week trip thats the right way. But you could go much longer even. I personally add an extra pair of socks since they get squishy after 2 days. I actually went that way once for a month in Puerto Rico. I did bring an extra shirt though But had zero problems.

Sometimes I wish I can limit the amount of things I bring on vacation and then I realize it would limit the amount of things I can do on vacation like swimming, hiking yardwork at friends houses going out to eat at nice restaurants, etc. For a week long trip: •2 sets of active clothing •1 nice flannel •Either swim clothes or heavy coat, long Johns, and wool socks depending on the season •1 set of pajamas •special blow up pillow for my injured neck •first aid and poop kit from my hiking bag. •I’ll wear boots or trail runners and put sandals/slippers in my bag •hat or beanie •head and shoulders •clean and clear overnight spot treatment •maybe tampons I do not under any circumstance want to ask anyone to take me miles away to the store just because I don’t wanna carry something.
