I fully agree, the function of being able to create and receive force and being agile is what it comes down to. Latter drills are missing the other part, because from where are you receiving from or creating force to and agility only makes sense if you are evading or attacking something.

Throw on some headphones and shadow box for a bit while visualizing an opponent. I think this is a method to drill footwork as described by the video without the need for a partner but I can agree consistent light sparring is key. Nothing can simulate a fight like sparring

I look at the ladder drills as simply lifting weights. Simply prepares your body to better perform the task at hand but is not a rubric of how your body should move

Some of the best footwork I’ve seen in MMA from different styles of movement are from TJ Dillashaw, Arnold Allen, Sean O’Malley, Randy Brown, DJ etc

Jokes aside you're right. Fighting is not a solo performance and based on the ongoing back and forth with your opponent, things that someone might call sloppy could be what works the best because it's unorthodox. Like a very slappy inside low-kick might not be as damaging as a fully committed one but if I'm live with someone I like using it like a jab to set up other offence. Obviously if someone fully does not respect it because I only use it non-committed without other techniques I might get tagged while throwing it out there but then that can also lead to me expecting a specific response to them to counter their counter. All in all that is to say there is always risk in throwing something out there but as long as you know and can prepare to mitigate the risks you can have success with even the most sloppy looking fundamentals. If you haven't heard about him, there's a guy called Jack Slack who shares a similar philosophy to fighting and I can recommend a lot of what he puts out there. I personally have to get back into my gym (Red's) sometime soon and take the advice of spending more time sparring but life's been holding me back sadly 😅.
