40:17 - I saw a road show of ECW during this year with my older brother and his friends (who had been to many ECW shows in the past, including the Mass Transit incident as we're from Boston). There was a match with Test and Big Show vs Tommy Dreamer and Sandman. At one point, Test had Dreamer in a bear hug (EXTREME!!!) and we started chanting "PEE IN A CUP! PEE IN A CUP! PEE IN A CUP!" at Test. We had front row seats so they could hear us. Dreamer starts fucking laughing. Big Show turns to us and says "Are you saying 'Pee in a cup'?" We nod and he just... fucking loses it. He has the biggest break I've ever seen. He shouts to Sandman what we're chanting and Sandman loses it. Even Test had to stifle a laugh in the middle of the ring. After that I think we chanted "You've got Bacne! CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP" at Test for a bit. Sandman and Dreamer really liked that one. Big Show actually came over to us after the match and shook our hands and was super cool. Even Test came over and was cool. That was the last house show I went to, but I remember thinking "man, if this is how the C-show house shows are, I might go to more of these!" Also, I'm wasn't a little dude at the time (I mean, I was 25 or so, but I was also 6'3" and 260lbs or so)… but god damn Test and Big Show were just fucking HUGE...

Only takeaways: - Early WWE ECW had a look and decent idea, even with the New Breed angle. - Big Show worked as a monster heel because he was a fat bastard no one liked. But that fails when you don't have the face people want slay him. - Could ECW 2006 have been NXT 2014 if Vince and the network backed off? - Damn, I loved Striker and Grisham.

I don't completely blame Big Show for his lack of credibility. You could be the best technical wrestler in the world, but if the booking committee makes them out to be a joke, that's how he's going to be perceived. They don't understand that their creative decisions can have leave a permanent blemish on their career. Remember when Samoa Joe was packaged with that horrible Nation of Violence gimmick? There's still people who find it hard to take him seriously despite the tremendous amount of skill he possesses. I think that's the worst method in which someone could be booked: to be packaged as someone who's supposed to be taken seriously when in reality, they aren't. To me, it's easier for a comedy wrestler to step into serious competition because the audience has no expectations for them as a serious competitor and thus you can build up his credibility at a gradual pace. Big Show's flip flopped so many times on comedic and serious that it's impossible to be invested in any angle he's in because the minute you even begin to enjoy his persona, he changes it. Even when Andre was a face, they knew better than to book him as a joke. When he was a face, he was just friendlier than he'd be as a heel.
@TheFearmoths10 жыл бұрын
I agree. They did the same to Kane and I've never been able to take him seriously since. But worst of all was when TNA had Abyss doing that stupid Hulk Hogan and his HOF ring angle. It killed the Abyss character forever as far as I'm concerned.
@Vinnce1210 жыл бұрын
shanethewolf You could say the same thing for Eric Young as TNA Champion. Someone with considerable in ring ability and can skillfully adapt to changes to his character, wasted for so many years being comic relief and fucking around the mid card that when he won the championship all anyone could do was shake their heads.
@TheFearmoths10 жыл бұрын
Vinnce12 I haven't watched TNA for a long time, but when I heard Eric Young was champion that was my reaction too. It's usually a death sentence for a wrestling career, although some people (i.e. Kurt Angle) have managed to pull it back.
@Vinnce1210 жыл бұрын
shanethewolf Kurt Angle's a different case though. No matter how poorly they could book him, they tended to put him in matches that showcased his abilities. Even if the basis of the feud was weak, you were usually guaranteed to get quality matches and the audience recognized that. So when Angle became dropped the goofy all american goody goody persona, fans were fine with the transition because they knew that his character wouldn't affect how he wrestled in a negative way. Unlike Eric Young with the stupid "Brain Damaged" gimmick, where he'd forget who he was teamed with and would try to tag in his opponent.

Ever since I finished watching the ECW arc, the part @ 21:25 always bothered me. If Heyman wanted to feature shoot-style matches on ECW, then why was he so against Vince on pushing Bobby Lashley as both the face and champion later that year? I never understood his reasons behind his gripe; Lashley is just as legitimate a wrestler as Angle and Brock, yet Heyman insisted on having Punk as the champ instead. If you're going forward with ECW revolutionizing match styles based on MMA popularized by UFC, wouldn't having a former soldier and Gold Medalist at the Military Games sound more logical than a heavily-tattooed guy that looks like a 90s throwback? Ironically, Vince was two steps ahead of Heyman at the time, and he probably didn't realize it by now.
