@@peps5508 Technically, he only wrestled a few spotlight shows for ECW. He was never a 'regular' fixture with the company - he wrestled some great matches with Psicosis (and I think Juventud) and then they both went on to greener pastures. This entire match had a strange dynamic with the crowd. The crowd was too ecstatic for their own good. lol They wanted the nostalgia from the masks, but taking the mask off is a sign of respect from the wrestler to the crowd, so it's a very awkward situation.

the crowd booing Mysterio was because everyone else before him tried to be nostalgic but he came out in his baggy pants and WWE gear, and WWE music, and 619 became his WWE finisher but he didn't do it in ECW and they felt like he was not paying homage to ECW.
@sonicheroxd5767

Well the year after, he did try to be nostalgic as he ditched the baggy pants for tights and even had ECW sewn on his mask. So he learned from the year prior. The issue that year was that Rey was now representing WWE and was wrestling Sabu, who was beloved in ECW.

@alexf9381 10 ай бұрын
@@topcatmattIt was his crime. That whole alzheimer patient study thing was hired and funded by his family who were specifically looking for something to pin on and find an excuse for his excuse his actions. It was not an unbiased study group that did that study. Also, for the record, Nancy's family vehemently argue that matter. Here's the thing, after he killed his wife on Friday, he then carefully stopped and planned his next actions over an entire weekend. He drugged his son before killing him, he left messages and even gave a coded goodbye to Chavo Guerrero over the phone when he called him. On top of that, Benoit was having wrestling match after wrestling match leading up to the murder spree and his wrestling matches were largely planned, choreographed and set up beforehand. He also did promos leading up to the murder with lines given to him by writers. Somebody with a 90 year old alzheimer patient brain would not be able to do any of those things. My 80 year old grandfather has alzheimers... NOT a chance. Nancy stated on official court record (and to her friends) that he was abusing her in secret and she was scared for her life because he was a different person in private.

As much as I enjoy seeing this, its still upsets me to see Mike Awesome. That guy could and should have been a massive superstar. Granted, his promo skills weren't great, but he is easily the most agile big man in wrestling history, and he could work any style of match with any kind of opponent. WCW dropped the ball with him so spectacularly with That 70s Guy, and WWE didn't do much better during the botched invasion angle. I remember when I heard he'd died, I saw the headline and I literally said to myself, "Please don't let it have been suicide."

He never got the kudos he deserved as a performer but the work he put in behind the scenes and how he selflessly gave (and still gives) so much to up and coming wrestlers shows especially nowadays when you have instances like the Dudley Boys (sans Spike who really should've been inducted alongside them) being inducted into the HoF and how they spent so much time on Dreamer (even if a lot of it was ribbing) - he's an emotional guy and even a cold bastard like myself felt emotional seeing Tommy so proud of his friends. For anyone that cares, the reason during the Mysterio/Psychosis Foley makes the remark about not bringing Mr. Socko is because two nights ago at Hardcore Homecoming, he interfered in the three way dance between Sabu, Shane Douglas, and Terry Funk and pulled it out on Shane and the crowd booed him as Joey Styles said "That's not hardcore." and then he wrapped barbed wire around the sock to get a better reaction.
@ravinraven6913

I boo Rey and Psychosis because.....they are more gimmick than wrestlers. To me, neither of those two can be HARDCORE... Sure they have tons of history in Mexico and the luchadore have skills that most heavy people can't pull off. But none of those are wrestling moves.....619..there's no ropes in real wrestling so that's no where near real. head scissors, huricarana...not real, that's how you kill people. These fake wrestling moves are more dangerous and not valid moves, I did a DDT to someone who had sucker punched me, dropped him on his head and he started gushing blood. This isn't wrestling, its just fighting with tricks. Id rather see a real fight than a scripted shoot. But I don't want to see people fight either...I am not a barbarian who gets off to watching people bleed or get "beat up" And if I don't want to watch them fight then why would we want to watch them dance? What are we all gay watching some beef cake strip or dance half naked, Not me, not into that thanks. Its cool if you are and no hate for that but its not even a good show

@Alsebra
@Alsebra 11 ай бұрын
I do believe it all boils down to wrestling styles. Mysterio wrestles a very WWE style (more flashy) while Benoit and Guerrero were more ECW style (more...extreme, I guess)...hell, even in Lucha Underground, Rey was still working a WWE match. In fact, Super Crazy, Tajiri, and Little Guido got cheered, despite all three being contracted to the WWE for some time (and Guido, I believe, was the one who spent the most time with the WWE over the years). This points towards Rey being seen as more of a "sell-out" than other ECW alums...FFS, *Jason* got some cheers and he was reviled through the entirety of his time on ECW.

I remember this show and I was so excited for it. I bought the ECW DVD that came with the RVD action figure. I remember when ECW moved to TNN, because it was never syndicated in my area, so I could only watch the advertising package that they played on a loop the day of a PPV on the PPV channel and that's how I watched ECW before TNN. I was so brokenhearted that RVD couldn't wrestle that night. Anyway, the reason Rey got booed is because he was wearing those stupid pants and he was wrestling WWE style and not the cruiserweight style he got famous for. I remember it distinctly because I felt the same exact way. Especially after the awesome throwback Jericho did.

It could have been a good place to stick newer guys who were coming up but weren’t main roster ready. Once Big Show won the title, it felt dead to me. Once Lashley won it, it was buried.

At the time Rey Mysterio was very much seen as a “John Cena” type figure where he was marketed toward a younger audience, and in turn that’s why he got that reaction from the ECW crowd. I think he was also seen as a “WWE guy” if that makes any sense.

Rey got booed cause he came out to his wwe song and did his wwe move, in front of an ECW crowd.

@AlwaysLookCool 729 How is it petty? He made zero effort that night. He thought he could just show up and do his generic WWE house show shit, and everyone would love him cause he's Rey. Well, he thought wrong. Between all the roids, the generic/cartoonish look, and having to change his style so much (which made him a poster boy for all the things ECW fans hated about WWE in the first place), and not putting any effort into doing anything special for the fans that night, he brought it on himself. The match didn't have to be as good as what they did in the past, but they could have done a hell of a lot better. Psychosis was obviously game, but Rey just wanted to do his WWE shit. Like I said, NO EFFORT AT ALL. Eddie and Benoit didn't get booed, because they hadn't changed all that much over the years. Shorter hair, and roided up a hell of a lot more, but more or less the same style and quality of work. Plus, as he pointed out in the video, the "crusaders" were distracting the audience a lot during their match. As fun as Heyman's "shoot" was, they should never have fucking been there. But Vince is too fucking insecure to ever let anyone forget WWE if he can help it.

@AlwaysLookCool 729 I think it's understandable. Jericho made the effort to wear his Lionheart attire earlier in the show, so fans were expecting the same from Mysterio.

funniest part is how the show was funded by wwe, set up by wwe, and most of the people in there watched wwe -- yet they acted like they were completely different lmao

Great review. Brought back a lot of good memories. Also, the moment you said you were still in an ECW mood, I was internally screaming "Please review Heatwave 98". I can't wait for that review.

this video brought a smile to my face man, such an epic show and, to be honest, an amazing review; your opinion on most of these matches is similar, if not spot on, to the reactions I had watching for the first time. congrats on 251,000 subscribers also man!

I’ve watched this PPV so many times over my years of watching wrestling. As a kid I didn’t know or care about Awesome and Tanaka, so I always skipped right over this match and the Heyman promo to get to the main event. A few years ago, when I became a more mature fan and started appreciating things more, I included that match and promo in my viewing and I now see it’s one of the best matches on the card.
