Y’all - as someone who has suffered months and months of having painful dry patches that were seeping liquid on my face, and being so stressed and ashamed by my appearance, I’ve learned some things on my journey: - switch to non-fragranced moisturizer such as Vani-cream (this comment used to say CeraVe but they changed their products 😞) and apply it religiously, every morning and evening ESPECIALLY in the winter months - avoid certain foods such as eggs - avoid excessive heat/hot showers, - look into taking Yeast-cleanse supplements, and different probiotics (I’m by no means a doctor, but there’s some evidence that some types of eczema is caused by yeast) -as Dr. Dray mentioned, try to double-down on fragrance as much as possible, but also silicone (common in makeup) -STOP using beauty-blenders (instead use the SIGMA flat kabuki brush, which is AMAZING- I clean all my brushes at least every 3 days with baby shampoo) - lower makeup use (stopped using thick foundation, and I never touch maybelline mascaras- lots of chemicals and a big trigger) - instill habits that are calming, such as meditation, walking, and yoga -incorporate anti-inflammatory foods -lower exposure to pet dandruff/dust -if your partner smokes, ask them to wash their hands/brush teeth after (that was a big trigger for me until we discovered it) - if you exercise, moisturize an hour before, and right after you’re done, wash your face gently and use a cold compress (they have reusable face masks you can place in the freezer) and place it on your face for about 5-10 minutes - cool and room-temperature drinks are your friend - drink lots of water - take an allergy pill when you feel a flare up coming on (Allegra is my favorite, and many of the pharmacists I know recommend it) -when I feel a flare-up coming on, I take a large amount of Cerave moisturizer and layer it on my face, like a mask before I go to bed -get regular sleep 😴 -limit interaction with people who are major triggers of stress, for instance, one of my family members was very abusive, and just being in the same room as him could make me flare up - seeking therapy and distancing myself as much as possible really helped me find peace (and lowered my flare-ups incidentally) I still have red spots sometimes, but I’ve noticed a MASSIVE difference. Hope this helps. EDIT: A year later, it really warms my heart that people are still finding this helpful. Also-- I've heard of some people saying that CeraVe changed some ingredients and is now causing acne (I hate when companies change what is already good!) Other moisturizers for sensitive skin (that don't have harsh chemicals/break you out) include: Vani-cream (AMAZING and cost effective!), First Aid Beauty ORIGINAL no fragrance Ultra Repair Cream, and Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask (I use it as a heavy moisturizer in the evening sometimes and it never breaks me out.) Also the incorporation of non-fragranced and "free and gentle" detergent for washing clothes, towels, and sheets also helps. Stay safe and take care of yourselves, wishing all of you the best. 💛

I started wearing makeup at age 13 and wore it religiously. Eventually I got eye eczema in my early 20s. I tried to deal with it for over a year, then in desperation I finally decided to stop wearing makeup for a week to see if it made a difference. It totally did! I stuck with it for a month and it was sooo much better! I was able to simplify my skincare routine (bye Lush!) and pare down my makeup to just some basics (which does include eyeshadow primer and eyeshadow!) and my eyes are back to normal for almost 10 years now. I’m so glad I did that makeup free month! Even if I couldn’t wear makeup anymore, it’s worth it just to not deal with the horrible painful burning flaking unsightly eczema on the eyelids!

They say health care in Canada is so good, and I do appreciate it for the most part, BUT ... it's not easy to get a referral to na dermatologist these days. Several years ago I had the worst eczema flare of my life. The reason was I had unknowingly damaged my skin barrier, and as you said, was continuing to expose my skin to items that caused dermatitis. It was so bad I had infections in both eyes and was on oral antibiotics and prescription ointments and drops for my face and eyes. I saw my regular doctor and asked for a referral to a dermatologist. I couldn't get an appointment for over 2 months, and by the time I saw the specialist, it had cleared up, and left permanent disfigurement. I asked for patch testing and was told they don't do that anymore unless it's a life threatening allergy. It was so frustrating because I was suddenly reacting to everything that touched my skin, even makeup I had used for ages with no issues. I was the one to figure it out, not doctors, and it was via Google and KZbin videos I realized I was over exfoliating and damaged my skin barrier. I was never even asked about my cleansing routine, and at the time was using an Olay spin brush with a physical exfoliating cleanser twice a day, and around my eyes, too. So, thank you Dr. Dray for educating so many people.

I appreciate all your advice on dealing with facial eczema. Mine is definitely allergy related (ragweed is my nemesis). I try to get ahead of it by starting my allergy meds several weeks before ragweed pollen arrives. I find (for me) that wearing makeup actually makes the inflamed areas improve and look better, probably because it creates a barrier between my skin and the pollen. One of the things I notice about my eczema/dermatitis spots is that I often have matching spots on either side of my face. I have no idea whether that’s normal or not...just a little weird. I have learned from dealing with eczema that trial and error is probably the best way to go. I have used so so many creams that did not work, vanicream, ave o, eucerin, dove, dollar store, VS, and finally landed on Cetaphil which improved my eczema BUT it wasn’t until my sister recommended Cerave that I finally realized I wasn’t at the “finish line” yet. It has taken one day of applying Cerave cream to clear up almost all of my eczema patches that have been lingering on my skin for MONTHS. Trial and error may be too risky for some people but in the end you have to do what works for you and your skin. Acne is another thing, I used so many acid cleansers targeted towards acne and then one time I was low on money and used a plain bar of soap for a week which cleared up most of my acne, month went by and just that bar of soap cleared up all of my acne. Realized that I just needed a mild to regular cleanser instead of a salicylic acid cleanser. Is this going to work for you? Probably, probably not. If you can, don’t be afraid to try new methods. Heres my routine that works for me: 1. Go see a Dermatologist for a diagnosis and topical treatment. I drink 2 liters of water per day and take a fish oil supplement everday. I prefer the liquid form over the pill form. I take a anti histamine everyday. ( Xyzal) or the generic Target version is just as good. 2. Stop wearing makeup during a flare😪 I use a cool mist humidifier during winter months. Set at 45-50 RH day and night. 3. If wearing makeup or sunscreen, I remove with Albolene then I Wash with a gentle, creamy cleanser. I rinse with lukewarm water and gently pat. Leaving water on my skin. 4. IMMEDIATELY MOISTURIZE with a fragrance free moisturizer of your choice. I use Cerave Night moisturizing cream followed by Cerave night renewing cream. 5. I wait 10 minutes, then I apply my topical treatment, Tacrolimus 3% which is in an ointment vehicle. 6. If im not using my prescribed topical ointment, I use a light layer of vaseline or Aveeno ointment instead. Morning Routine: 1. I DONT wash my face with a cleanser. I srpray my face with Avene Thermal water..but a splash of regular, lukewarm tap water will do. 2. MOISTURIZE IMMEDIATELY with a fragrance free moisturizing cream. I use Cerave in the tub. 3. Day 10 and the weeping eczema on my face is finally starting to dry up. In a moment of weakness, I strayed from my tried and true Aveeno gentle oat cleanser and tried something else to wash my face. While no "bad stuff" appeared on the ingredient list, clearly something it contained is an allergen of the highest order for me. The crusting, oozing lesions (sorry!) went from under my chin all the way up my jaw and into the area above my ear, all on the left side where I probably missed an area while rinsing cleanser off, so it stayed on and did its damage. OMG what a nightmare. Thanks for devoting this video to eczema, it felt supportive while providing good info on this awful skin condition.

If you live in countries where you have heaters in winter it makes the air soooo dry that in the morning you can even get a nose bleed... If however you dont want to buy a special humidifier, I remember from my childhood putting a special attachment onto the heater with filtered water that helps to moisturize the room at the same time :)

A big tip is to wear cotton gloves overnight to avoid scratching whilst sleeping. I velcro mine on to stop them falling off and doubly benefit by using thick creams on my hands (under the gloves) overnight. I had an eczema flare that started in early January on my neck, but after six weeks of using my normal treatments it would not clear up. I had to get a stronger steroid cream from my General Practitioner (UK) and it cleared up within a week. I rarely use steroid creams, as I normally manage the eczema fairly well by diligently moisturising head to toe twice a day. I'm reluctant to use steroid creams regularly, but will use them if I am unable to manage without them. I have been unable to isolate the cause of the flare and stopped using every possible topical culprit. I have introduced my favorites one by one carefully with no issues, so it doesn't appear to be product related. Oh well it will remain a mystery. I only wear sterling silver jewelry as costume pieces often make me itch. Triggers can be different for everyone, but moisturising really well on a daily basis definately helps. Best wishes.

Thsnk you Dr. Dray for your great videos. I would like to share with people one product that had help me heal the discobfort of my infected eczema. I was one those who thought that using strong face wash cleanser would kill the bacteria or whaterever cause my flare- ups. Anyways after watching your videos I realized that keeping your face moisturized would work best. So I was introduced by a friend to this miraculous Maroccan Black soap , that i use twice a day when I'm stress or feel a litle itchy, and my face looks just amazing and it has minimized the flare-ups and off course I used one of those heavy moisturizer that you recomended. PS. the black soap is not a bar, its in a form of a soft dark green gel ( Organic). Good luck everybody, I know how frustrating its to deal with it.

I had 2 different types of occasional eczema on my face and neck. I had effective prescription meds but I'd rather not have any episodes. The dermatologist recommended fragrance free laundry detergent. I like my usual detergent and was reluctant to change so I tried the cheapest free and clear detergent at Walmart. I decided to use it on my sheets and towels since they contact my face and neck. I was skeptical but when I went almost a year without a problem I was shocked. I use the same detergent for my dog's bedding and towels too. I should mention that all my skin care products were fragrance free to begin with. I travel with my own pillow and if that's not possible, I take a pillow case.

It's important to emphasize that Eczema sufferers should not exfoliate their skin like the everyday person. Chemical exfoliators even retinol/retoniod, besides glycolic, exacerbate eczema. I found out years later unfortunately. Don't believe me, research it and you'll find plenty of medical articles discussing it.

I had head to toe eczema two weeks straight, no relief, got worse and worse. I itched and itched, much blood was drawn, my skin turned to leather. Red hot as the most severe sun burn, unrelenting. I tried more than 30 treatment suggestions, including those from doctors. It wasn't till I came across a 5 minute youtube video speaking of hemp oil as a cure. I tried it. Miraculously it worked, after getting worse at first. Took away my itch, and healed everything within 6 days.

According to Ayurveda, eczema can be compared with “vicharchika”. It is mainly caused due to the vitiation of the pitta dosha in the body. Pitta dosha overheat the rakta dhatu and predispose to toxic conditions that are expressed through the skin. Eczema is more commonly seen in Pitta Prakarti people as pitta can overheat the rakta dhatu and predispose to toxic conditions that are expressed through the skin.

I started immunoglobulin therapy (subcutaneous IG) for primary immunodeficiency, and I am becoming allergic to everything 😩 My laundry detergent, the elastic in my clothes, my hairspray that lands on my skin, even my own sweat and tears really irritate my skin. My bloodwork looks amazing, better than it's ever looked 4 months into therapy. But I am constantly itchy and now my face is breaking out along my jaw line in this rash. I wash my pillow cases every few days. It's hard to weigh therapies when they're treating the underlying condition, but causing so many side effects. All I was told to take is extra Benedryl, and be sure to carry my Epipens. Neither of those help this though.

Dr Dray, Thank you for all the education on a myriad of skin issues. I tried many of the Ordinary serums and was doing well. I have always had good, clear skin, never had acne or issues with my facial skin. Now, at age 74, I have developed Eczema, on my hands, arms, and most alarmingly on my face which is my primary concern here. Now that I have established a good routine with moisturizers, serums, cleansing etc, how do I treat the eczema on my face? I assume I have to lay off the serums like niacinamide, the acids, etc. and just keep my face well moisturized but I am afraid my days of skin with no wrinkles or spots is over. Help! Can I at some point start my Ordinary regimen again?

What's really been helping my skin has been washing once a day with CLN body wash, which is specially formulated to kill the bacteria of folks prone to eczema, folliculitus, etc. Gentle enough for the face and to use every day. Eucrisa ointment (Rx) on typical flare points. Then moisturizing with CeraVe moisturizing cream. Also sleeping with an ice pack helps me get through the night if I have a flare.

It took almost a year before I was able to see a GP (virtually) about my very infected eczema. After 2 courses of Keflex, a corticosteroid that turned my skin an orangy colour, she now wants to try me on Elidel which I'm a little nervous of. My urgent referral to a dermatologist is an 8 month wait (opposed to the usual 22 months). In the meantime, I limit how many people see me and hope the intense scarring fades in time.

Soooo true, about stuff, you put on your hands. I had such problems with inflamed eyes, a while ago. The culprit turned out to be my footlotion with SA/urea. What little remains on the fingers (or maybe under the nails) must have been enough, to trigger a reaction just from maybe carelessly scratching myself or something. I always make sure, to scrub my hands and nails clean, after applying it, now.
