Wow-- u interviewed Brock Yates? Cool..... I feel like he's like, an old friend or something. My first prescription of "Car and Driver" started in late 1989 (I think the cover was the new-ish LT1 Vette up against the Z32 Twin Turbo "King Kong vs. Godzilla") I've ALWAYS envisioned some sort of epic drive across the nation, or along Route 66, etc. etc. Good on you for getting all the shit together that you needed to make it happen. And good choice on the car, too: Nice & "roomy" CL55. (I know this happened eons ago but, somehow I missed it.)

Looking now into the proper radar jammers and detectors as well as passengers to help me navigate and lookouts to let me know what's coming my way. Getting all the proper equipment and fuel cells will be costly but worth it. Just bought a 2017 mustang gt that I'd like to attempt it in at some point. Originally wanted to try in my 03 cobra, but decided a naturally aspirated car might be the best route to reduce failure and possibly overheating. For what it's worth, being a year late to comment, he says in his book, For The Record, that he left the ECU stock for the sake of reliability, and a desired cruising speed of about 150. In the video they say he peaked at 158.

I'm actually surprised the average speed was only 98mph, was expecting at least 130 considering the car can go over 150, did you run into a lot of left lane hogs or something?
@17oggerdoes7 жыл бұрын
think of your speed through cities and more congested areas. a 100 mph average is pretty insane
@man_on_wheelz7 жыл бұрын
True, but I figured with the majority of the drive being wide open road, shouldn't bring the average down THAT much
@EdBolian7 жыл бұрын
Our strategy became to drive as fast as we could safely at all times. That was generally a cruising speed of 135-145 mph but even with strategic windows of time through each major city, the roads were never clear for more than a few miles. You encounter a lot more cars that you would imagine.
@man_on_wheelz7 жыл бұрын
Really? I guess that's understandable considering I can't even keep my cruise control set for more than 10 minutes before I have to cancel it and match the other cars/trucks speed lol
@mcearl80737 жыл бұрын
I can believe it, my Mercedes keeps track of my average speed and it's always way lower than I think it should be, the slow times really bring down the average.

Wouldn't a 1000cc sport bike do quite good at this? Weaving and the quick fill up times could be a good combo. I'd imagine it would be uncomfortable though...
@subhankhalid90626 жыл бұрын
TFC yeah, firstly your ass would be flatter than an ironing board, secondly, although i live in the UK, i know not all US states let you lane split, thirdly, on a superbike, your fuel stops will be more as your going to be 100mph plus, so your filling up often wasting more time, plus safety aspects and the increasing hate from non bikers for being reckless or so on, also lies in this aspect, although, its a good idea, i would try this
@johnnyliu71056 жыл бұрын
could you imagine ridding across the US non stop? I love riding but I will never attempt to road trip non stop, atleast in a car, with 2 other passengers, you could rest.

What did you have for rubber on the CL Ed? With that load and those sustained speeds they must have worn considerably?
@EdBolian7 жыл бұрын
Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Great tires. I actually used the same set on our car for the 2904 because they had tons of life left. As I think about it, I think they lasted about 4k miles for Atlanta to NY on the CL and then about 6k miles on the car after that before we put them on the S55 and made the run so another 4k miles. They were down to the cords about 5k miles after we got the S55 home so call it 19k miles or so. Really solid as I think about it.
@smokesgtp7 жыл бұрын
Ed Bolian Wow, that is very impressive. They have always been top rated rubber. You guys should have parlayed that into an endorsement somehow haha.

Not trying to be disrespectful in the slightest, just trying to understand how it hasn't happened yet... if ever.
@EdBolian7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the question. The problem with higher performance cars like the ones you mentioned are the comfort (for 28+ hours), fuel capacity, room for additional fuel economy, and conspicuousness. You could definitely go faster for 100-200 miles in a car like that but not for the length of this trip.
@EdBolian7 жыл бұрын
Not unless it is done entirely in an autonomous car. That could certainly happen. It is not remotely possible on today's roads with today's cars.
@markofexcellence52097 жыл бұрын
I would assume those cars would get destroyed on potholes too
@ericrichardson44037 жыл бұрын
Ed, Help me out -- while the 03 CL55 was a fantastic car for the run -- and I agree with your decision against a "Supercar" -- the 03 CL55 AMG gets (from my experience) around 13 MPG when you're having fun with it and 20 according to the EPA. I assume your numbers were similar or a bit worse, with the extra fuel in the car + two people + high speeds. After doing a bit of research -- a Taurus SHO gets 16 MPG when you're "having fun" with the car. Given the SHO's larger trunk and better gas mileage, a bit of math tells me in one of these setups you could do this with only one stop. Black it out + front cattle guard + Police Interceptor wheels + CB antenna + spot lights and it seems your time could be beaten. Thoughts?
