Side note: I always love seeing the sound credit for the single kick drum sample, props to the guy for giving the reference, that is something a lot of musicians don't do.

Not understanding the problem doesn’t make the answer easier …. When you pick the door (you don’t know where the prize is or if it is behind your door) but the host does …so after he reveals the door that isn’t picked …your odds increase to switch …it’s about the math not where the actual prize is …

Don't care what you say, Ed, I love the Double Decker. It is best appreciated if you take small bites and let it warm up in your mouth before chewing so the almond flavour of the nougat becomes more noticeable. Laughed so hard at the line "Lion Bar, fresh from the freezer" I was thinking I would take a Curley Wurley for similar reasons, no way it would be able to do much despite being longer than all other bars. BTW I live in China and conversations like that make me miss the UK.

You don't get to open your box. After choosing your box they will then open up one of the boxes you haven't chosen not containing the prize. You are then given the chance to change to the other unopened box. If you keep your original choice you have a one in three chance but if you switch its two in three. Imagine instead if you are given the choice of 100 boxes and then they open up 98 boxes and ask if you want to switch to the one unopened box.
@AzimovTube7 жыл бұрын
+em diar, you're making the mistake a lot of people make and thinking the odds have changed. Though curiously you think it's 33% to 50%, and not 50:50. The odds have to add up to 100%, because it is certain that you would get the prize if all 3 boxes were opened.
@emdiar65887 жыл бұрын
Azimov I didn't really explain it very well. I didn't mean it was a 33% against 50%, leaving 17% unaccounted for. I meant at the point at which you chose your box you had a 33% chance. At the point at which you are given the chance to swap, when one empty box is eliminated, it's 50/50. But the point is, if you never swapped you always have only a 33% chance that you chose correctly. That said, I completely retract my statement that Paul was mistaken, because he is correct that at the point of first choosing, there is a 2/3 chance it is in one of the others. I'm afraid that was me not reading his comment properly. Apologies Paul. If you eliminate one of them there is still a 2/3 chance it is in the other one. Both explanations amount to the exactly the same thing. At the point when one box is removed from the equation, we have a 50/50 (Binary) choice, stick or change. however THE OUTCOME of that choice is not 50/50 it is 33.333/66.666 (rounded off to the 1/1000th). I shall delete my misleading comment. Thanks for pointing it out.
@AzimovTube7 жыл бұрын
It isn't 50/50 at the point you are offered the swap, that's what confuses people like Ed. So what Ed is describing very poorly (because he doesn't understand it), is know as The Monty Hall problem. A contestant on a game show is given the choice of 3 doors. Behind one of the doors is a brand new car, behind each of the other 2 is a goat. After picking a door, the host opens one of the other 2 which he knows has a goat behind it. He then offers the contestant the chance to swap his door with the other remaining unopened door. Question: Should the contestant swap? Answer: Yes swapping gives twice the chance to win. This assume the car is placed at random, the contestant picks at random, the host knows what is behind every door. The real key thing is the doors aren't opened at random, you will always be shown a goat. So nothing has changed, you are being given the chance to swap from 1 door to 2 doors. If you can't visualise why it is this way, then have a look at the wiki page for the monty hall problem. They have some great visual aids there.
@emdiar65887 жыл бұрын
Yes. As I said in my edit, The second choice is a binary one, but the probability is not. Thanks for your comment
@alexwatson127 жыл бұрын
So if the host doesn't know what's behind the door, does that mean it's still 50/50 after one of them is opened (assuming it doesn't reveal the prize)?

Bit of a comedian, eh? That's the hardest game in the world, that is, the old comedy game. Y'see I did me self, I done it, yeah, 30 years, man and boy. It is hard, innit? The fear of dying on your arse? Hecklers trying to throw you off, eh? Got to me in the end, I became mentally ill. That's not what done for me, though. I sustained a terrible back injury in 1972 on stage in Reykjavik when It all came to a head, I ended up falling off the stage whilst trying to nut a heckler. I carried on for some time with the madness and the back, but a friend took me to one side and said, ''Archie, comedy is a young man's game.Get out of it, son.
