Hi. You may not hear it very much, but then you should teach French students. Like many French speakers, their instinct goes for "-èd". I keep repeating myself but it seems useless. Old habits die hard. The worst pronunciation, for French speakers, is remember-ED sounding somewhat like "reemambuhrread". Another issue for my students is to distinguish a vowel from a consonant, not to mention a voiced from a voiceless. My students are industrial apprentices, whose interest in their native or any foreign language is closer to an absolute zero. 🤪 Thanks very much for your videos - they are truly useful in our classes. 👏

Hey, teacher. I have a really big question. Many people have told me that it's nonsense to study RP as THE ''British English pronunciation'' because there are many different kinds of British English pronunciation. I'd like to know if RP is still spoken and ''normal'' around there (?) and what you think about this statement. I really like RP accent, but now I'm afraid of being the only one speaking like that, like, clearly a foreigner who's just finished language school and still doesn't know how real people talk '-'
@ETJEnglish
@ETJEnglish 4 күн бұрын
1. RP is definitely spoken here - I teach contemporary/modern RP, so essentially the most common, everyday version of it right now in the U.K. (and it continues to change) 2. Pick the accent you like.. or even a combination of many if you want! If you like the RP accent, learn it… if you like the Manchester accent, you could learn that instead. There is no real answer to which accent is best. 3. Don’t forget that accent reduction is an important thing to focus on first! You can build from there Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. Good luck!
@katrinannify
@katrinannify 5 күн бұрын
Hi ELLIOT is there any difference between modern RP and posh pronounciation?
@ETJEnglish
@ETJEnglish 5 күн бұрын
A "posh" accent (upper RP, for example) does have a few differences to the modernised contemporary RP most teachers, like myself, teach online. It's much less common now to hear some aspects of posh accents and they tend to sound outdated in the modern world... people might look at you strangely if you pronounce the world "goal" or "bowl" with a strong /əʊ/ diphthong (like the queen did). Maybe I'll make a video about this in the future.
@katrinannify
@katrinannify 4 күн бұрын
Thank you for your response! I would like to see video about upper RP. I don't know if this true but some people claim that Emma Watson or Tilda Swinton has "upper RP accent" and if it comes to the queen her accent is slightly different because of German influences. Also Tilda and for example journalist Jo Ellison have accent mixed with Scotish. I would be very glad if you could show the examples. I like voice of Rosamund Pike and Carey Mulligan but I am sure they have rather modern RP. Sorry for all grammar mistakes. I am very happy to see you on youtube again. Thanks to you my boss in London praised me for the progress!😂

Do teachers teach this in British schools nowadays? I went to school in Britain long ago and there was nothing of this, no phonetics or pronunciation rules were ever taught. There was no EFL then so I went to mainstream classes. Everything to do with accents and pronunciation was picked up by ear over time. The Japanese Emperor in the recent state banquet hosted by King Charles made such a mistake in his speech, I cannot remember the exact word but the past tense's ending should have been /ıd/ .
@ETJEnglish
@ETJEnglish 2 күн бұрын
Pronunciation/phonetics isn’t taught as a standalone subject and isn’t part of the general curriculum in British schools. It’s more down to whether that English teacher is qualified or has extensive knowledge in the field and if they would like to include it in what they teach. It tends to be more “repeat after me” without the explanations shown in my videos. In some prestigious schools you will find that elocution may be part of the curriculum.
