Years ago I was in India (I am form Germany) and I was immersed in English all day. But I didn't want to acquire an Indian accent so I tightly stuck to the RP I learned at school - so I hoped. Some weeks in my stay (which improved my vocabulary by tons!) I met a couple from London and we were talking about how fast India was developing. I was lacking a word and asked them for it - and they looked bewildered at me and told me how surprised they were when I told them I was from Germany, untel then they were sure I was from London also - from Kensington to be precise. Well, THAT made my day!
@humanist76193 жыл бұрын
Sir, where were you stayed in India. I am an Indian. Yes you said right, India is developing but at a very slow pace. The main problem of India is that it has got very diverse linguistic, ethno, religious groups and a humongous population . Also it is very conservative and religious nation. I think the biggest problem is democratic framework of indian government. If we had a communist system like China than surely we would have been more developed than now and probably be a superpower till now. Many developmental projects take 15- 20 years for completion after so much debates and documentation in parliament. Take the example of China, in 1980 it was even more poorer than India. Now after 40 years in 2020, it has 10,000 US$ GDP per capita wheras we have still meagre 2,000 US$ GDP per capita. 1China = 5 India despite both nation has same population. I guess you might had visited some big metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore. Rest of India is still backward like African nations.😞😞

This was a phenomenal lesson!! I'm so grateful to you, Elliott, for uploading it and for your efforts. I'm excited to see where your pieces of advice will take me on my English pronunciation journey! My favourite accent is the modern RP. I like that it isn't too posh as that's stiff to me and it's got the Cockney glottal 't' which I like. I'm more drawn to British accents (not just English ones) rather than any other English dialect. I find it easier to pronounce English with the modern RP accent than with an American one. Actually, in most of the tonal languages from south-east asia, when you change the tone of a word you change not only the meaning of its but the emotion. One trick I find quite useful to make me sound more natural when I speak English is imagining how I want to say it in my language, the tone and emotion, then express the same way in English

My funny story. In 1994, as a student, I went to UK to work. At Victoria Coach Station in London , I asked cashier for a ticket to Gloucester. I tried to pronounce I as i thought. "WHERE ???" Cashier said. She did not understand where at all. I had to write city name on a piece of paper. "Aah! glo·stuh ! She said. WOW, that was new experience for me 😊The cashier said that I have bad English. I remember it till now. 😊 Finally I reach a farm near Hereford with my bad English language. 😉 One day, one of the local permanent workers asked me. "Are you from Birmingham? You have an accent from this region." No, I'm from Poland. She was surprised, and so was I. I spoke as best as I could. It was a nice experience. In London I did not know English but in the Hereford area I was a Englishman form Birmingham. 😂 BTW I like the American pronunciation, it's so round and soft. Every word is said to the end. In general, British sounds like "jerky". Like Britishers were eating the endings of words. 😊 Sometimes it's hard to understand. Your pronunciation is fine. I hear and understand almost every word. If you use glottal sounds it is more difficult. Best regards and all the best.
