Ed began working at GM in 1972 as an associate designer, and would rise through the ranks to become the first Global VP of Design ever, with a team of 2,500 people in design studios around the world. To foster a sense of teamwork and cooperation between studios, Ed invited all design staff worldwide to submit their ideas for the C7 Corvette. He held the bar high, encouraging his team to make a Corvette that could be called “Stingray” once again.

congratulations Ed, you have made a huge impact on world car design. Your passion and style is inspiring. You saw that Cadillac, Ive seen the Indy, the CERV III and the Banshee. Later the CIen, the Ciel, the Corvette Stingray and... all these were milestones that will lead the entire automotive design into a prouder and more stylish future. And you made that happen. Generations will be grateful and speak your name with respect. Thank you Sir. And all the other wonderful people who were involved

I worked with Ed when he was part of the Oldsmobile Studio. Myself and Ben Holanda worked for Guide Lighting and would go into the studio to work on the latest lamp designs and present lighting mock-ups. It was during the Olds Cutlass "water fall grille" timeline. Ed was someone you could discuss design, engineering and legal issues with who took the time to understand and try to work things through. He was a great person to interact with and I enjoyed the encounters. Ed, it would be fantastic to meet again and talk a little about those times. Bob Tetrick Guide Optical Engineer.

Why did many speakers in this video refer to Ed Welburn in the past tense?
