“Replay” is an incredible album - one of my favorite of all time, and definitely up there with “Play Deep” and “Voices of Babylon.” I remember when “Babylon” came out - it was right before ‘grunge.’ While Nirvana may have disrupted the trajectory of a lot of bands at the time, for myself personally “Voices of Babylon” disrupted grunge. While my friends were getting into the Seattle bands, “Babylon” set the tone for me, and it protected me psychologically against the false messaging of cultural resentment of that time. The Outfield wer nothing to scoff at - there are a lot of honest ideas in their songs. “Replay” also helped me to process the darkest transitional time in my life involving an artistic breakthrough, the death of my parents and subsequent exile from Philadelphia, and the realization of our current epidemic of psychopathology. “Replay” was part of my soundtrack for that time, because of the Outfield’s observations on that album of what’s true for those of us who preserved our health and sanity.

Ed, I was at that same gig you were at in Seattle when Tony and his group performed there. At the Triple Door, right? I was right in front of the stage! The rythym guitar player and I were so close to each other, we were interacting with each other the whole time, even carrying on a conversation at times. Remember when they kept joking that they were all hungry? I asked Shawn, the rythym guitarist, if he was hungry, too, and he said "starving"! After the show, he gave me a hug and said "thank you for being my biggest fan"! Then told me to drive home safely. What a nice man he is! Out in the lobby, I got to talk to Tony a little bit, he was very nice, too, and he signed my paper and wrote "All the best". That entire evening was a lot of fun! Was shocked just a little over a year later when he passed away. I really miss him and John. Take care, and thanks for this video!

I met Tony just before he went on at a gig in Austin,Texas. Very positive guy. The music The Outfield made stands up STILL. Strong melodies, very real sentiments, great playing (for the song!!!!)...its what made them so much better than the competition. I chatted with their producer once and he stated, wryly, "A little band that sold a Billion records". I think his sarcasm was an attempt to state how superior their music was and how..later...people insensitively forgot about them. But I will never forget Tony,John and Allan. Their music is etched on my heart.

True story: Back in the 80's The Outfield was supposed to play at The Summit in Houston, Tx. Apparently, it got canceled, and only God knows how, but they played in front of the wave pool at Splashtown in Spring, Tx. I was working that night, and got to meet all 3 members of the band in the back Employee area. John Spinks and Tony Lewis were really nice to me, and I asked them to autograph my time card. I still have it, packed up some where in my attic. It was one of the best summers of my life, and this topped it off, as it happened at the end of that summer.
