The Tower of London is an easy three hour or so experience. If you aren’t interested in much other than the Jewell’s it is a waste of money, but those who enjoy history can certainly get their money's worth in time and exploring. I’ve been three times now and still find it fascinating. Although, the first couple of occasions it was £29 or so… not £34. Those busses though!! Worst of the lot. Uncomfortable, cold and can’t see the sites on the opposite side as someone usually stands in the way to get a picture. Better just getting the tube to the nearest station and walking to them.
@LadyCalverley11 күн бұрын
The aquarium IS very pricey, but it's also very well done by the look of it... and they have to feed and care for all of the sea creatures, and keep all the habitat clean and safe for them, so I can easily see where the money goes (I have never been, TBH, but it looks like one of the better aquariums in the world). The Eye and the Shard are total rip-offs. Both big nopes from me. Have a web search, and you can find other free places to go for a good view. The Tower of London is truly a must-see for history buffs, but you did yourself a massive disservice by not joining one of the tours led by a Yeoman Warder. Those blokes are hugely entertaining, and they give you context for what you're looking at. Advice for any tourists enjoying Ed's video: go early to avoid crowds and massive queues to see the Crown Jewels (I've personally never bothered, but that's just me!) If you are a true hardcore history nut, you can attend a Ceremony of the Keys, but you need to book well in advance. It's a quick ceremony (happening 365 nights/year for centuries), but a cheap way to get a small taste of the place, and very spooky at night. Again, the upkeep for such a massive ancient complex is mind-blowing, so I feel it's worth it to go at least once. Hard Rock? Meh. Tussaud's doesn't appeal. Never done the bus, but I suppose if you only had a day in town, it's an easy way to see highlights. Thanks Ed! You always make me smile. I'm glad you found that lovely little clown fish. BTW, I was taking a work-break... can you tell I didn't feel like rushing back??? Thanks for indulging me! ;)

Love the concept of this video! With traps like these I always tend to value them at what it ideally costs to run them. Jewels sitting in a display that you walk past? They’re paying for what there? A wax museum with a ride, theatre, probably a solid aircon bill? Makes a bit more sense. Usually aquariums make the most sense, especially with a wide selection of animals, due to upkeep and whatnot… but they’re still so expensive and once you’ve seen one they’re all fairly similar.
@amzee20411 күн бұрын
There is quite alot of maintenance involved in looking after the crown jewels. Pretty much anyone who does is some sort if specialists. They require more maintenance than you think particularly as alot of them are very old.
@migliamiyo5 күн бұрын
The £35 covers more than just the crown jewels. That's the cost of entry to the Tower of London, which includes beefeaters wages, maintenance and training, and the maintenance and I guess security of multiple buildings, which are 600-900 years old. Conservation is really expensive.

You didn't give the Tower of London a chance. Did you really not walk through all the levels of the central White Tower and see all the exhibits? The waxworks has dramatically improved since the 1970's, but I still wouldn't pay the high price. I was in London early in the year, and I loved that the best things in London are free. The museums are incredible and free. I lived in the National Gallery, and the British Museum is incredible. I also loved that I could find the remains of the Roman Wall (free), walk over the Tower Bridge, and around the Tower of London (free), find Execution Hill, walk around streets with a view of St Paul's (free), explore the docklands (free), find where famous people like Turner and Jane Austin lived (free), enjoy the oldest pubs in Wapping (cost of a drink) and enjoyed reasonable priced lunches at MacDonald's, Burger King, and KFC. I went to supermarkets for ingredients for dinner and breakfast. My only souvenir was a metal TFL endorsed Underground roundel. It proudly sits beside my Route 66 road shield. I was impressed by how much London has for the tourist on a budget.

THOSE are tourists that fall into the traps. I am sitting here in little NZ, with a head full of knowledge, possibly more than some Londoners, i love love love history. If I were in London, food wouldn't even be on my list. Would probably just pack cucumber sandwiches.😂 The crown jewels?? That would enthrall me, I'd spend ages there taking in the vibe, understanding everything I've learned has become tangible. It, to me, would be worth the €10 or was it more? 😂😂😂 ... Wax museum? Yeah nah. The aquarium.... nature wins out every time. Those would be the two things I'd do. Then I'd probably go stare at the King's guard horses and wait for them to nip someone.

I became a total sl*g"! But re: Tower of London, I spent hours there! The restaurant / bar was on the 15th floor, and you had amazing views of Central London. My Adopted father worked in the old hotel and I was working there from as soon as I was allowed on school holidays, and it became one of those places where you'd save the £30pp going on the Eye. The wheel in Hong Kong cost me less than a fiver, and even though not as big as the eye, it was so much nicer in terms of seeing the city.

I couldn't agree with you more, Ed - I have two memories of my one-and-only visit to Madame Tussands in 1974: one being that nobody got anywhere near any of the waxworks, which were literally arranged in viewing galleries you just walked around and looked at; and when we came out, my father gave me 50p to get us each an ice-cream from the van parked outside - and couldn't believe that I didn't have enough money, as they were 25p each - I mean, for one scoop out of tub you could probably buy in one of them new-fangled supermarkets - like, the really enormous 25,000-square foot ones that we'd never yet even set our eyes upon! But, right enough, you got a whole, paper-wrapped brick for 11p at the local Co-op and for 4p, you got a flake in your cone as well, from the ice-cream vans that came down our street at that time! Likewise, all I remember about the Tower of London is Beefeaters, the Crown Jewels and lots of queues... You only got Big Wheels in fairgrounds back then, and penguins in zoos - although there were a few fish tanks at the dentist's... As for sitting where directed by bus-men and not being charged for the privilege, I naturally couldn't possibly comment...!

A lot of the things are so that kids have something to do. There are so many brilliant historical sights but the aquarium, Shrek, eye, Leicester Square etc are to get the kids enthusiastic. My only advice about London is - don't do someone else's holiday. If the Eye is something you always wanted to do ... then do it. Yes there are free ones but if it's on someone's bucket list ... they can decide if it was worth it. To me, two of the best free things are the Mithraeum and the amphitheater at Guildhall but it's not too interesting for kids or people who want to go there on a pub crawl.

£28 to go to the top of The Shard is one of the more affordable skyscrapers I can think of. One World Observatory in New York is $49 just for General Admission and has tickets much higher than that. Loved this video though, happy you're experiencing it so I don't have to

Next time you're near the Tower of London visit All Hallows By The Tower church, there's an incredible mini museum in the old crypt

Disagree with the Tower of London. There is so much more to see than the Crown Jewels and it's actually very interesting if you are interested in history

Why don't you do a follow-up video on all of the free things in London & how much they are actually worth. The Natural History Museum, Museum of London, National Gallery etc. You could even throw in some parks & gardens. I honestly think the free stuff is so much better than any of the tourist traps (although I do actually like the aquarium). 😊

I like the bus tours iin London as they have multiple routes you can change between and it helps to see a lot of the main sights of London a lot easier in a day. Yes, it is expensive but they also have an audio guide to tell you what you are looking at and if you see somewhere interesting that you want to stop at then you can get off and then get back on at any point in the day. There was too much to see when I went with my sister so it definitely needs 2 days really but we went all around Hyde Park area, saw the Royal Albert Hall and then did the part by the Houses of Parliament. We didn't have time to do the part towards the Eastern side. It was also quite fun sitting upstairs on the bus with a small amount of snow falling too.

But for less than half the price you can buy a day ticket for the tube and go to all of those places.

@@Jim-so3zm But you don't get to see everything else around when you are underground, I like to see what is around. I have been on the tube so many times and it is not the same as a tour bus. Also the tour bus gives some interesting facts about places I didn't know about and now want to visit, you don't get that from the tube.

@@littlemissgiggles165The buses used to be so much better when they actually had people doing them and not a pre-recorded audio track. The price was much cheaper then too, which is funny considering now they have less staff to pay. I went to London 2 years ago and soon realised that the busses were constantly stuck in traffic. For £3.60 you can get a zone 1 day pass on the Underground that you can use all day and as many times as you want. Plus, you can actually get close to the places not just view them from the top of a bus with tons of annoying tourists trying to take photos. The bus was probably the biggest tourist trap and the biggest waste of money we spent. I completely regret spending nearly $200 for 3 of us for 2 days. We stopped using it after the first day after we realized the Underground was much quicker and convenient.

I actually like the big buses when I go to a different city. I can't walk far, and most of the time I really only wanna see a place quickly and then move on. Also it's nice when you feel like you're doing something, but you're really just chilling and taking in the views. So the big buses in London were worth it in my opinion, the ones in Prague are not.

I'm the type of person to say " oh that's what's his face off the telly" And you think it's expensive just for you. Try being a family of 4 😂
