So... lemme get this right... For £29 a night, you get a noisy, sweaty coffin that looks like it came from Wickes? For £43 a night, you get sweaty shipping container with Blade Runner vibes? For £112 a night, you get a train sleeper compartment for tall people with a crappy bed? Yeah.... think I'll just take my chances with a Travelodge. Thanks for taking one for the team, Ed!

I stayed at the Yotel in Heathrow a few years ago. If this one's anything like that one, the bed is that high because the stack these slightly higher up or lower down to maximise space. Someone will be sleeping in another bed just under yours. Their room will be at a lower level, so they're not sleeping on the floor or anything but it will make that room a bit more 'accessible' for non-youths.

Some see and have also proposed the capsule hotel concept as a solution to the housing crisis because "they would be the future of rental housing" and "rents for smaller apartments would be more affordable" and "tenants currently want smaller apartments." However, I believe that living in rented capsule apartments is not healthy for people and mental health, because capsule hotels are not meant for permanent living, but for temporary overnight stays. And that's why I'm afraid of the plans to build rental apartments for the poor and students with a capsule hotel concept.

Instead of copying capsule hotels, what we (as in countries like the UK, USA, Australia etc with housing problems) should be doing is copying those tiny apartments they have in Japan. Having seen many KZbin videos showing off such apartments I think they (if they did them properly) would be great for people who don't need a lot of space and don't own a lot of stuff.
@danielmalinen6337
@danielmalinen6337 5 ай бұрын
@@jfwfreo If the building costs can be kept low. In Finland, we tried mini-apartments and built a few apartment buildings with 10 and 15 square meter apartments as a test. But the rents of these mini-apartments rised so high that no one rents them for 700-900 euros a month, when you can rent a 30-square-meter apartment for 500 euros. Even the marketing of mini-apartments as luxury didn't attract residents to move into them.

There’s no chance you want to sleep in a capsule without some proper ventilation. Having at least minimal soundproofing instead of just a thin piece of wood. The real question is if the capsule hotel is better than a hostel. Why choose a capsule over a normal hotel room for the same price? Maybe it makes more sense in a big expensive city though as you’re unlikely to find hotels at a low price. They should have the best capsules for sleeper trains though.

@WhichDoctor1

Yeah, the sci fi versions of these were imagined because of severely limited space of spaceships and such. We are currently living on a whole ass planet. There is more than enough room for people to have more than a couple square meters to themselves. The only limiting factor is the insanely inflated costs of property. And that’s an entirely invented problem. We could choose to arrange things so that isn’t an issue if we wanted to. And personally I think that’d be a better idea than us all being forced to sleep in coffins with RGB lights

I’d put forward the Shark Hotel at Thorpe Park as a capsule hotel. They’re marketed as cabins, but 2 people staying there is a nightmare. Stayed in a Yotel at Charles de Gaul airport waiting for a connecting flight. What a load of shite that was. Got a family room. It had ensuite toilet and shower with a large glass partition and a see-through curtain for privacy. I used the toilet down the corridor instead. The canteen was a shelf in the reception area with packets of crisps and biscuits and expensive bottled water. The design was meant to be futuristic but lots of things were falling apart and the place wasn't especially clean. It didn't seem well staffed, the few guests there were just clinging to a table by the reception desk wondering where they were supposed to go.

For the first one, me and my partner actually stayed there the day before this was uploaded, the guys there were absolutely lovely and sorted out our issue with the fan since ours didn’t work either. Very clean, lovely common area. It is VERY noisy though. And only for a single person, but me and my partner fitted in that small capsule all night 😂

I'd probably stay in a capsule hotel because finding a room with a single bed in a normal hotel is near impossible

What the HELL are those prices? I thought the idea of having a room the size of a phone booth, was to save money. I've had all inclusive, 5 star resort rooms the size of a decent apartment, for those prices. AND with a sea view. AND in countries with decent weather.

@@notwithoutpizza4702 Egypt, Thailand, Turkey. You'd probably get a really nice room in Vietnam for that price, too...hell most of SE Asia. But even a backpacker's hostel in London is cheaper than many of these, if all you want is a place to sleep. And those are a bit of a rip-off, too.

I’ve stayed in a couple of the CityHub capsule hotels in Amsterdam and Copenhagen and they were fantastic

I’ve stayed in a fair few capsule style hotels and hostels in my travels in Asia. They’re ok. It’s nice to have a little bit more privacy but overall the price increase and how damn hot it can get in them, doesn’t really justify them. Also they’re typically not very social places. Just get a normal hostel bunk bed with a curtain for cheaper 9/10. But I do see the appeal occasionally for one

Are wooden ice cream spoons not normal in the UK? In the US , we grew up with those spoons included in ice cream cups. Well, at least those of us old enough to remember life before smartphones. 😄

The first one is great for anyone who would rather not sleep on a park bench... suspect it's priced for that market too.
