Hazmat suits on to tackle the filth! The Rat Rover's body is finally off, so Paul and I can now strip down the chassis to its component parts. But not before we give it another thorough clean.
This time we're getting to blast off all crud that managed to hide between the rusty body and its rusty chassis.

Hey Edd, warm and sunny greetings from San Diego, California! I've been a fan of yours since the very first episode of Wheeler Dealers. But I must confess, I would always record the show and then - with no disrespect intended - I'd fast forward through all the "staged" silliness of that "other fella" and just watch your segments. Anyway, I'm not one for leaving KZbin comments and have only done so once or twice before. But I just wanted to let you know what a great permanent addition Paul is to the show. It's exactly what the new show needed! And knowing you guys are long time, genuine friends with chemistry together really makes all the difference. Now the new show has the same, familiar feel of the old WD show... without the pretensive acquisition aspect. (Which we all knew was completely set-up and staged ahead of time). Again, great job on the new show. And best of luck. I hope to be watching for many years to come. 😎

A bit funny that they had a segment on proper refrigerant disposal after a section on improper oil disposal. When degreasing an engine mind your runoff. Don’t make your problem someone else’s problem. It all goes into the river and, like most, I don’t prefer my sushi served Exxon Valdez. You could’ve had a boom off camera soaking it up, but I didn’t catch that note.

Those 'scrap' cast manifolds flow very nearly as well as the SD1 manifolds. They flow much better than any tubular headers that we tested when developing the engine. I would leave them in place... (I worked on the development of that engine at Land Rover)

@@eddchina The compression ratio standard is nominal 9.35:1 but most of the ones I had in the development department had to have the heads skimmed to get to that. The ignition timing was set so it could run on 91 unleaded so it can take a few more degrees of advance without any issue on 95 unleaded, about 5 degrees or you can push the compression up to a heady 9.75 with the SD1 Vitesse pistons. If you are taking the motor apart, the timing gears and chain can be improved, the fibre cam gear wears and so does the chain, retarding the valve timing. The chain also drives the engine oil pump so if it wears or is damaged the oil pump can stop. To give it some more RPM range, you can fit the older P6 tappets (if you can find any) they have a softer spring inside that lifts the maximum RPM up to around 6000 before the tappets pump up (which holds the valves open). In the plenum chamber, pull the front pair and rear pair of ram tubes from the base (they are held in by loctite and may be now by a bit of corrosion) and shorten them by 25mm, then put then back in with some loctite 638. Leave the middle four alone. This improves the air flow in the manifold. The standard injectors are most likely worn out now and the engines are really sensitive to fuel mixture and flow balance. The blocks can crack over the centre of the main bearings, around the cam bores and from the bolt fixing from the clamp plate, so look for that. Also the rear water passage at the back of the engine can leak into the rear cylinders, the single piece head gaskets were not the best. If you can check the air meter is doing what it should do. Dirt and water often gets through the air cleaner and drops their performance which ruins the fueling. There is loads more.....

As a fellow owner of an '87 RRC 3.5 with manual transmission in very rare Alaskan Blue and of similar stature to Edd. I'm 6'9". Can I ask would it be at all possible to make each episode maybe a bit longer say 45 mins or even an hour. Dear Edd with your conversation about bolts even the most modern and metric cars have at least one Item in them that is an Old imperial/ Standard thread, And that is Seatbelt mounting points and bolts, As the industry had basically one type of bolt and thread passed and everyone still uses that to this day, Just thought I would mention that 😉

If you want to see a very common non-metric thread in worldwide use that hasn't changed in over a century, look at the 9/16" thread used to attach the pedals to, literally, every modern bicycle (except some of the very small children's sizes). Tightening is done using a 15 mm spanner or a 6 or 8 mm hex key though.
@forevercomputing

@@peglor British standard. Easy to change the head size than the thread size. Plus, older heads probably have a head capable and suitable for 15mm in imperial.

Love this project, Mini had interesting aspects but very one marque specific which if not into modern Minis or club rallying was a little boring, this is more old skool and as a person of increasing wrinkles ticks all my boxes, keep up the good work Edd you put the icing onto Fridays.

Edd, is the height difference between you and Paul a problem when you work together under a car? I think He struggled a little to reach some bolts in this chapter.

Edd, this is a fantastic channel. Keep up the excellent work! I’ve always been amazed by the sheer quantity and variety of bolts, fixings, wires, clips, bushes and other bits that have to be disconnected or removed when you strip down a vehicle. How do you record/log what’s been done so you can rebuild it correctly. Have you any tips or a method you can share?

How on earth do you keep track of all the nuts, bolts and washers that get taken off, especially over a long-term project like this? And on rebuilding, how many bits do you have left over at the end?!

Put all of the bits for a specific part into a labelled bag or (if the part is too big for a bag) a labelled box

Hello, Edd! I immediately like it! Thanks to your video, I will also raise the level of English. I am from Russia and we have been taught American English pronunciation since elementary school. And it is very difficult to translate British speech by ear into Russian. But subtitles help, thanks for the videos!) Today I just changed the belt of mounted units on Discovery 1, Hurrah for English cars!
