James Simpson It’s sad when voters can’t just focus on the nominated performance. I love Alan Arkin and he was wonderful in Little Miss Sunshine but it did feel like a consolation Oscar for his career rather than the actual performance, especially when Eddie Murphy was in the running for THIS performance.

I loved Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine but I guess there just wasn't enough of him in the film. I wouldn't call it undeserved though and I'm currently watching Dreamgirls but I'd say Dijmon Honsou in Blood Diamond or Jack Nicholson in the Departed (unnominated) deserved to win that year
@fourthgirl2 жыл бұрын
@@williamdurbin1576 Jack Nicholson was nominated in the best actor for the Departed. Alan, Dijmon and Eddie were all up for best supporting actor. I love Alan Arkin, but he did the same routine as always. He was much better in Argo and The Kominski Method. I agree that Dijmon's performance was better because it was all drama. Eddie managed to keep the humor within the character, add drama and a singing performance.

The main reason for Jimmy's downfall in the film was that he stopped making soul music. He was stuck making pop and sad records, making him sadder because he had no art to pour his pain into. This scene shows that his career/life would've been different if he had stuck to HIS original sound. The crowd was loving it too, Curtis was crazy for not letting him expand.

James Brown/Jackie Wilson/Little Richard + Marvin Gaye in Motown (with a Wilson Pickett charisma). Eddie manages to synthesize and encapsulate two different waves of soul music: the energetic/sexual/rocking R&B of Brown, Wilson, and Richard in the late '50s; and then at the same time, the Motown soul-pop... Marvin's artistic break from Berry Gordy's creative (commercial) control at Motown-that is, What's Going On-is portrayed as funk music! This is funny because that actually evolved through James Brown's work in the '60s, parallel to the Motown sound rather than opposed to it.
