Previously Unseen Footage of Eddie Van Halen and Jason Becker
The two guitar legends spend time together in this recently released 1996 video.
You can donate to the Jason Becker Special Needs Trust via this link: www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted...
All donations go directly to assisting Jason and his family in their ongoing battle against ALS.
An amazing meeting took place on August 31, 1996. That’s when Eddie Van Halen spent the day with a guy who had followed in his footsteps playing alongside David Lee Roth-Jason Becker. Jason had been diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and was not in good shape. Van Halen came to Jason’s house to give love and support-as well as a guitar-to his friend and to film an ALS awareness promotional video. During that time, Eddie told stories, talked about his creative process, and played amazing music, instantly sounding exactly like Eddie Van Halen even when playing Jason’s guitar through a small practice amp.
This never-before-seen footage shows a side of Eddie Van Halen that goes far beyond his brilliant musicianship: a sweet, caring, generous personality, devoid of the trappings of fame or rock stardom. The video also documents the incredible strength of Jason Becker, who had been deprived of his shot at fame as well as his genius guitar skills, but still found the courage and the will to battle a debilitating disease.
“Eddie was such a beautiful person,” says Becker. “He was incredibly kind to me and my family. Not only was he my biggest influence, he had such a huge heart. He honestly saved my life.”
This video is a must-see piece of history, not just for guitarists but for everyone. It truly shows the magic of kindness, and a depth of emotion that we can all use more of.

I met Eddie randomly a few years ago out riding my motorcycle, and he in one of his sports cars.. Just walked up to me and wanted to talk bikes up on Angeles Crest Highway near Los Angeles.. He was just a gearhead out talking shop.. Dude was a seriously humble guy, especially in light of how many millions of people he inspired to pick up a guitar.

@@davelaneve2446 ALS is brutal. It took down a giant of guitar. Jason has done amazing to deal with that situation, but I am sorry there is no good happy ending here. Jason was struck down, a certifiable genius level guitar player not allowed to fully utilize that brilliance. This just proves that life is all a bunch of pot luck bullshit. There is no plan, there is no reason. Some of us get lucky and some do not. Jason didn't get lucky. Sorry to be morbid, but nothing will change my mind on this. There is no telling what Jason would have done had he not been struck down. No telling and only our imaginations can imagine it. And even that I don't think does his greatness justice.

@@jamieperry3731 My man, I have been through the gauntlet of fire with severe Tendonitis, and it takes the acute combination of savvy strategy and applied discipline. But you can pull it back. It took me the better part of a year to get my wrists and hands back in condition. It was an extensive learning curve. And it takes patience in the process. But if you stop doing the things that harm, and start doing the things that heal, they can recover.

It felt very natural to be around him, although he did not like much if you praised him too much, he would be happy to play for you and joke around, always that grin. You know... Before a show in Jacksonville, his wife Valerie and I watched him warm up for one hour where played all kind of styles including some classical guitar stuff like Mozart ect... I've heard many stories of Eddie INSISTING that you play his main 5150 guitar and check it out, even if you didn't know how to play. He made you take that guitar and manhandle it... that way others could see that it was just an ordinary guitar. Nothing fancy... Of course, we all know that all of his guitars were "him"... from the concept, design, aesthetics, and construction. He knew the physics of a guitar and focused on the relationship between its mechanical-electronic properties... those "little" things that no one ever thought about that add up to the sound, resonance, and playability of the instrumemt when exploited by meticulous design

Man, don’t ever try and tell me that this man had no heart. Eddie caught a lot of heat over the years when it related to his relationships with band mates but this is not the first example of the enormous heart that he had. If I’m not mistaken, he lay a guitar of his in the coffin with Dimebag Darrell as an apparent sign of kindness and respect. Also, whenever he talks about Wolfie you can hear the love for his son in his voice. Rest In Peace, King Edward!

This was A Christmas Gift for me .. Back in the late 70's. I snuck into my sisters albums , It was Van Halen .. A week or so later I asked my father " Can you get me a guitar ?" .. . 40 years later , My father has since passed . This year I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in my thumb and it was amputated . It spread to my brain and I am now stage 4 brain cancer .Been holding on .. I was blown away when Eddie pointed up and acknowledged " It comes from above " .This video lifted me up that I have been crying the whole time writing this . The true love in that room .. was a gem and thanks for sharing .. .. This is the good that can come through the internet .. Months ago a guy that writes backing tracks that I play along with . One day I went to his KZbin channel brokenhearted .. and I gasped .. There was a song he wrote .. Dedicated to me !! though I have never met him .. I would only comment and tell him how inspiring his work is to so many players around the world and I sent him my Love .. It all is the Circle of Love and seeing two of my greatest guitarist , Together , showing innocence and love .. Was a Christmas Gift to me .. Thank You Jason .. God gave you a Gift and you shared it .. God Blessed You ,, Peace

I lost an email account where I had sent Jason an email as a teenager. It was my first year of playing guitar, and I was already enamored with everything I could get my hands on of Jason & Cacophony. I wasn't in the best of places in my life, nor was I anywhere near Jason's territory on the instrument or understanding of music. His email gave me strength to play and strength to keep living the best way I knew how. We talked philosophy, we talked life, we talked guitar, we talked about me, we talked about Jason, and Jason's parents. I was just a 16 yr old riding through a dark tunnel taking a shot in the dark emailing one of my hero's. I'm still here today because of Jason's strength, and even though I don't have that email to re-read, I still think of what it meant to me at the time. Glad you're still here with us Jason, and glad EVH is in a better place than before, with Jimi and the rest of them, like he said in this video.

The title track and Mabel’s Fatal Fable are my favorites. I’m only 15 but with no commitment and everyday I tell myself, Jason’s somewhere out there, with this horrid condition am I just going to sit here and do nothing, or learn his songs. I don’t know where my commitment is but I’m going to find it. Jason you’re on of my biggest influences. I’ll learn as many songs in your honor. I promise
